Hate this didn’t work out for you guys. This curriculum was a game changer for us. We went from TGATB (which was too spiral for my daughter) to MWC and everything started clicking. I love the way it teaches the child to think about numbers. My daughter’s number sense was greatly improved.

We used MWC for first grade- Loved it! It was perfect. So naturally I bought second grade for us this year. What a fail that was! We were only in our first couple of weeks before she started crying every time I told her it was time to do math! It was too many steps for her. Like, warm up section, listen to the lesson, do the workbook pages then the review. And even though she enjoyed some of the games, they were just Another step she needed to complete for her math lesson. Neither of us enjoyed it anymore. I really wish it worked for us though. I was one of the moms who went out and bought alllll the enrichment books to go along with it 🥴 We still read the books but I definitely could have saved that money haha

Thank you for your review! Man math is a journey for so many homeschool families. You are definitely not alone. I hope y’all get back to finding joy in math. I know it’s challenging, but math really is so fun when it clicks!

She sounds like my daughter!!! 😂 I’m debating getting third grade math with confidence but we had these same issues in second MWC and only got halfway through.

We tried math facts that stick and it didn’t work out for us. Too overwhelming and hard to teach. We love TGATB!

Thank you for this video! I am have a darn of a time trying to figure out what you use for math next year for my daughter. I’m debating using Eureka this year or possibly Math You See

I totally get it with the teachers guide. We used MWC level k and I loved it because my daughter was learning but hated the TG and the teacher intensiveness about it. I bought something else, it didn’t work, so I just bought first grade math with confidence, and used the tips another mom gave me and it’s been a game changer. I highlighted the script and organized all the math manipulatives on my homeschool cart. It’s been a blessing. However, it would have been 100% perfect for us if it was written to the student just like TGTB. We tried it, but it was too spiral for math. We love the language arts though. Video lessons sound amazing, though. ❤

The videos are the sealed deal for me PLUS the written lesson as well. I love options!

@@beachgurl788 I tried TGTB math level k and Apologia Math level 1. TGTB math, was not a good fit for my daughter. She needed the mastery approach for math and it was spiral. I liked it, she just doesn’t learn math well like that. Apologia felt like the explanations weren’t deep enough for my daughter. I liked that it was mastery and written to the student. I went back to MWC because my daughter thrives with it. She has deep understanding of math concepts because of it. 😊

@@beachgurl788 TGTB was easy for the parent to teach. Try it, especially because you can download it free. If your student does better with mastery then apologia. Good luck with finding the right math.

I love the idea of highlighting the script. Thank you! I’m going to try that to make MWC 2 a little smoother for us. ❤

@sleepybaby9928 We've had a similar path as you with math- MWC, Apologia, ans TGTB. We actually love TGTB, but I'm not convinced yet it teaches as well as MWC so I'm considering trying MWC again for 3rd. I'm nervous though because my daughter started to really dread MWC but says math is fun now with TGTB, so maybe we should stick with it if it's working for her and she likes it? Other than highlighting in the TG, do you have anyother tips that has made MWC more successful for you all now that you're back to using it again?

I also didn’t love this curriculum after trying it with my 2nd grader this past school year, and we also ended up back to using the good and the beautiful for now until we find something else that works for us!

If you have time could you do a review on Keyboarding Without Tears? The website is so vague about what they actually work on. For example does grade 3 start with the home row or something else?

I agree with so many of your points. I never thought about highlighting the script, so you’ve got me doing that right now! I think that will really help, but I wish they made the teacher’s guide more readable and definitely perforated!!
We completed MWC 1 and are on week 4 of MWC 2. It has been wonderful for our youngest daughter and I wish it had been available for some of our older children. It has been SO helpful for her, but I have to set her workbook under the Teacher’s Guide as I read it to her. 😂 I guess that is a good sign that we have children eager for some independent learning, right?!
I also find that the materials list doesn’t always truly have every single thing listed that I need to use in a given lesson. That’s mildly annoying. I’ve started keeping scratch paper near by so I can write things down. If I have a workbook curriculum and a teacher’s guide with a materials list, I think it should tell me to grab paper or a whiteboard, etc for a lesson where those items are required. It may be silly, but I’m a mom of 5 and for a couple of years I was homeschooling 9 kids. I just need it all listed out!
That being said, I am pretty certain our youngest has dyscalculia and this curriculum somehow just helps her to truly get math! But only if I use the teacher’s guide exactly as it is written and only if we play all of the games. I’m a mom who likes to adapt, customize, and use short cuts. That just doesn’t work for our youngest!
Your MWC reviews actually helped me to decide to stick with this program, so thank you. Sometimes seeing what does not work for one family helps us to see why it WILL work for our family. Weird, but true.
Love your videos and your sweet spirit. Thanks for all you do!
Love from an old mama who’s been at this for almost 15 years. ❤

@@beachgurl788 It would be challenging for me to do MWC if all of my children were using this curriculum. My other children are all 5th grade and older, so MWC does not have math for them. I know they just released Level 4 this month and next May/June they plan to release Level 5.
What makes this doable for me is lessons are short and it is easy to use this curriculum 4 days a week without the enrichment day. I also love that this curriculum is only 32 weeks long. Most curriculum is 36 weeks long. I looked at Apologia too, but there are a lot of similarities. The only advantage I saw in Apologia math is the fact that it is Christ centered. I do prefer that kind of math program, but the overall quality of the program did not look any better to me. It also requires mom to be hands on and it is more expensive. For us, MWC is just the best fit.
When I was in my season of having one baby after another, I mostly stuck to Bible, math, reading, and handwriting. Then we just read stories or listened to audiobooks. I think the solid foundation of MWC would’ve been a great fit for our family. I will pray God shows you exactly what to do.
Congratulations on your sweet new baby!!

@@beachgurl788 PS: One easy for mom curriculum that is much more independent for the child and affordable is MasterBooks Math Lessons for a Living Education. Beginning with Level 4, they have optional MasterBooks Academy videos. This has been a wonderful fit for our second-to-youngest child. We have used grades K-4 without videos. We have used their videos for grade 5, 8, and Algebra 1.
I have kids who struggle in math with diagnosed severe dyscalculia and I have a 6th grader in Algebra 1, so our children truly vary in their mathematical abilities.
Some people say MasterBooks is not enough. I think it just depends on the child. My average-math kids and my gifted math kids do amazing with MB materials. My 2 dyscalculia kids need something different.

I hate you didn’t like it! My son loves it! The instruction to develop number sense is amazing. My son tested 6th grade math last month. Our parent/kid portion is only 10-15 min.

Sorry that it didn't work for you guys. My daughter and I absolutely loved it. The teaching portion is only 15-20 minutes tops. This has made my daughter love math. So far, it's my favorite to teach also. I have used Saxon, Rightstart, and Dimensions.

@@blessedhomeschoolmess Sounds like you are wanting something that can be a little more self directed. I have hopped around a lot trying to find the best for my daughter but didn't make me want to pull my hair out. I know you'll be able to find something that works and rekindle the love of learning math. :) Although I got to warn you, my son is entering 10th and algebra is quickly making that love fade...lol. But he is very good at it.

Jen, thanks for sharing that. We used MWC for Preschool-2nd grade. My daughter's homeschool support program uses Singapore Dimensions. We tried switching to that and had nothing but tears! I was considering a different math like Saxon but MWC has never failed us!

I have math related learning disability. Even though I graduated from high school. In 1991 math skills are lacking. I use Learn Math Fast workbook. It has lots of examples but your daughter. Is so young. I would only use it if there was specific concept she was struggling with. It is definitely not full curriculum. I use other things to supplement. The lessons for myself.
