The contrast between the massive interchange at BC-99 and that pitiful railway crossing in Surrey always blows me away. Thanks for capturing the insane settlement in the Tilbury area. This road already needs a lot of work.

Thanks for the comment. This had been the first time I had driven SR-17, and I was surprised at just how much it had settled through there.

I think the settlement areas catch more than a few drivers by surprise. Thanks for the comment.

BC Hwy 17 is a highway that travels from the provincial capital, Victoria, in the southeast of Vancouver Island and have a ferry route across the Strait of Georgia to mainland Canada and finally travels through Delta and Surrey in Greater Vancouver. The distance of that route is 121 km.

Old Yale Rd is going to be grade-separated from Highway 17 as part of the Patullo Bridge Replacement project. This will remove that signalized intersection adjacent to the at-grade rail crossing. In conjunction with the Highway 17 at Highway 91 Connector intersection being upgraded to a grade-seperated interchange, Highway 17 will actually be a semi-proper highway. Though I'm not sure if the at-grade rail crossing is being removed. At least there will be 2 fewer signalized intersections on the highway in about 3-4 years when the projects are complete.

I didn’t realize that the signal at Old Yale Road was being replaced as part of the bridge replacement. That is cool news.

It's a shame about all of those at-grade intersections, and the quality of the pavement seems rather poor for such a new road. Vancouver seems to be an anti-road city. At least the passes beneath the Port Mann and Alex Fraser bridges was pretty cool.
    Nice work on the video.

Vancouver is an anti-road city. The design of this highway irritates me more than it probably should. Especially the section near New Westminster where it crosses a railway at-grade. It would be really difficult to upgrade that section to a wider freeway.
The land surrounding the highway is pretty boggy and soft, so I am a bit sympathetic that the highway has settled as much as it has, but it's still not the best for a new road.
      Thanks for the comment!

@@AsphaltPlanet1 As a resident of the Lower Mainland, I can definitely confirm that Vancouver is very anti-road. The Massey Tunnel replacement was halted as groundwork was beginning, the supposed Patullo Bridge replacement is keeping the same number of lanes and most of the freeways have only 2 lanes of travel.
Freeways weren't even really a thing here until the 1980s with Expo 86. That time was when Hwy 1 was finally completed through the Vancouver stretch and onto the North Shore. Pretty sure we're ranked as among the worst for traffic congestion.

@Rubin Hadizadeh It always will be most likely. The SFPR project almost got killed as it is. Transportation spending is a lot more focused on potential new railways to the Fraser Valley and several new subway extensions at the moment.

I used to live in Surrey and maintained the transmitter site in Burns Bog. The highway has been repaired several times in 2 sections. Unreal as it just opened when I moved their in January 2013. The section between the 91 connector and 80th deteriorated sank that you would catch air. Enjoy the videos.

thanks for the comment. The contractors definitely should have done more thorough soil investigations before building the highway, that's for certain.

The interchange between BC-99 and the SFPR lacks southbound-to-eastbound and westbound-to-northbound connections, almost as if BC wanted to prevent the use of the SFPR as a connector road between BC-99 (and I-5 in the USA) and the Trans-Canada. That said, this connection can be made via BC-91.
Nevertheless, a full freeway connection between BC-99/I-5 and the Trans-Canada is needed badly.

    • @AsphaltPlanet1

Construction is scheduled to build a new interchange between Hwys 17 and 91 at the Alex Fraser Bridge would should improve the connection between the two highways. But yeah, Hwy 17 isn't a very good highway in my opinion.

@@AsphaltPlanet1 Maybe in the future, there could be an I-105/BC-105 running north from I-5 in Bellingham, WA up to the TCH-1/BC-13 interchange (roughly paralleling WA-539/BC-13)? That 105 numbering was intentional on my part, given that such a route would connect I-5 with the TCH-1 (plus there is no I-105 in WA nor a BC-105).
This would only be useful for cross-border traffic however.

Cool ride. Was not expecting an at-grade railroad crossing there nor the bike lane to the docks there at the end. That bridge at 5:05 must be a unique one for sure.

Yeah. I agree with you. The at-grade railway crossing irritates me more than it should. There is a rail overhead near the at-grade rail crossing as well. So removing the at-grade rail crossing would be very difficult. I think this corridor is too narrow for a major truck route as well. Thanks for the comment

British Columbia. The Canadian province closer to the Pacific Ocean. How was your trip visiting BC? It's many kilometers away from Ontario and the Great Lakes region. I thought you took the Trans Canada Highway crossing Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and all the way to the border of BC. How much fuel you spend? That's before heading back to Alberta, right?

While flying to BC, did you take the "Toronto Pearson International Airport", the "Toronto Island Airport" in Lake Ontario south of downtown, or the "Downsview Airport" near Allen Road and the 401? Which airport in Toronto would have been your best pick?
