one thing for FHW zoning. if cust has a mod/con boiler. Dont make the zone smaller than your lowest boiler output. say putting a porch with only 5k btu on its own zone when the boiler is 200k combi @10 % lowest output= 20k btu. boiler will just keeps short cycle.

Interesting point, as this can happen to any distribution. I frequently see it for boilers with add-on zones like you described, as well as whole-home ductless heat pump applications. Short cycling causes over heating, over cooling, high energy/fuel use, and premature mechanical failures! Thanks for adding this great point Z. W.!

@@HVACProBlog further more. if the boiler is equipped with the outdoor reset, on a warmer day when the boiler is only running at 120f target temperature. it’s going to short cycle even more. say if they have 10 ft of baseboard, @180f they get about 5800 btu output but with 120f they only going to get about 2100 output.
With the old cast boiler with mass water content this might not be a big issue however with low mass mod/con boiler where the boiler vessel doesn’t hold much heat it’s a big problem.
I’ve been to homes and see the boilers short cycles like crazy, boiler runs for 2 mins and off on temp and then 1 mins later it will try to start again.
