    This was a good show, haven't seen it in years. One episode in particular stands out for me, something about a Cripple Creek sausage factory. Excellent stuff.

    The worst thing about the Mill Creek set is that, in an effort to save some money on remastering the episodes, the opening credits of early season 1 are cloned and reused on all of seasons 1, 2 & 3. Midway through season 1, the show settled on the most iconic opening credits. This opening was tweaked for Seasons 4 & 5. So, the best and most iconic version of the opening credits is simply not available in HD. The answering machine messages remain the same but the video that goes with the answering machine messages has been switched from the stable pan across the desk to shaky handheld camera shot used in the earliest episodes.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  3 роки тому

      You can blame whoever did the HD remasters for that, not Mill Creek. Mill Creek simply releases the masters that are provided by the studio, they don't do the remastering themselves.

    I prefer the Universal releases for the series. At least you get the brief extras from the first 2 seasons, James Garner and Stephen Cannell interviews were nice little extras to have.

    Have you noticed that some bits of scenes are missing from the mill creek dvds? A reviewer on Amazon says there is about 23 seconds missing from them vs his Universal Studios ones.
    Is there a big difference between the blue ray vs standard Rockford dvds?

  • @dpastor6631
    @dpastor6631 Рік тому +2

    Thanks for the review, but you skipped the video quality. As someone who owns nearly 4,000 movies and over 230 TV shows on DVD and blu ray, and as someone who already owns Rockford Files on DVD (which is pretty decent quality), does the blu ray look any better or significantly better?
    I know some might say, "It's blu ray, so it must be better." Not necessarily. An example would be the fairly recent "I Dream of Jeannie" blu ray set from Mill Creek. The video quality on the blu ray is noticeably worse than the original seasonal I Dream of Jeannie DVD releases.
    We compared the same scenes from several seasons of Jeannie on several different TV/blu ray play set ups (all Sony and Samsung equipment) - and as a former AV professional, the connections were with the best connectors. And, lo and behold, the DVD's looked better. They interlaced the DVD prints to get the blu ray, and it has produced a jagged picture.
    So, thoughts on whether the blu ray from Mill Creek for Rockford actually looks better?

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  Рік тому +1

      I didn't "skip" the video quality, that isn't what these videos are about. They're strictly about the contents and packaging so collectors know which editions have what, and can get a nice close look at the packaging, disc art and any pack ins. There are plenty of other sites that do detailed picture quality comparisons, these have a different focus rather than simply repeating information already available elsewhere in far more detail than I would be able to provide. I have several of the Mill Creek Blu-rays of Universal shows (specifically this, Miami Vice and Knight Rider), all the masters were provided by Universal themselves and look great to me.

    I've been told that the region 2 land of Season one on Blu-ray has vastly superior image. It was put out by a company called Fabulous films, and the few critics there are on Amazon uk point to the general uptick. Unfortunately there's no indication that they're gonna follow through with the rest of the seasons, so I guess buying season one now is a risk, and I don't think sales have been that huge. It originally carried a hefty price tag of almost 40 pounds for season one, it's now down to almost half that. At the same time they put out first seasons for "Murder She Wrote" and Columbo, also on the high end price tag.

    Very cool video! I've just bought the bluray set. One thing you didn't touch upon was the pilot; I have the old UK dvd set of season 1 which has the two part version of the pilot, whereas the US dvd set of season 2 has the 70 min. version of the pilot (according to dvdcompare). I haven't checked my bluray yet and wonder which version is included.

    Is it mill creek 's intention to put out their Blu-ray discs stacked?

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  5 років тому

      Not sure what you mean by their "intention." Every few years, Mill Creek changes up their packaging. It used to be the boxes with paper sleeves. They go with whichever packaging manufacturer gives them the best deal. This is part of how they are able to keep the prices of their sets low. So yes, for now, the packaging they use for these Blu-ray TV Show sets have cases in which two discs are stacked on the same spindle.

    • @lookingforahookup

      Do they purporsely put out the stacked discs or does someone tell them to package them this way?

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  5 років тому +1

      @@lookingforahookup I'm not really understanding your confusion here. The type of packaging that they use is intended for two discs stacked on each spindle. This is simply the type of packaging they are using at this time. There's no big mystery or conspiracy about it. This was the type of packaging they went with because it was the most affordable for them to use, and thus allows them to keep the price of the sets lower because they don't have to use as many of these types of cases to house all of the discs in the set. It lowers the cost of production. Mill Creek has always done this, with different types of packaging over the years. This is just what they are currently using for their Blu-ray sets. DVD sets of the same shows use cardboard sleeves. Again, because they're cheap to produce.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  5 років тому

      Shorter season, only two discs so they didn't need the bigger spindles to stack them. Not uncommon for season sets to use different size cases for different seasons, depending on the length/number of discs. As for not showing the discs...oops. But by then you should get the general idea. Same design on all, the only difference being the main pic of Rockford, which you see on the covers, being on the disc art as well.

    I ended up getting the set mentioned at 12:08 because it was hard trying to find movie collection 2 stand alone at a decent price. Though, a warning to people on the movies; the last movie had one of the most disappointing endings I've ever seen and I've decided to pretend it never happened. The other factors I weighed in were the extras, and the option of subtitles, which the blu-ray doesn't have unfortunately. Personally, I didn't mind sacrificing picture quality for this trade-off but maybe if more people discover TRF, then another iteration will be in the future that has the best of both worlds.
    That, and it's always interesting watching the interview with Garner on what led to the show's cancellation, since he lays out how ridiculous his employers were when it all went down and how they still wanted him to work despite being injured.

      @@TannerBartko Doubtful, there is only the one set/discs. I don't consider them a very reliable source of info for reviews. Mill Creek doesn't do any digital tampering with their releases, they leave the transfers as they are received from the studio. It's never going to look any better than this.
