He's damn right about how tough a grind a TV series can be. I knew a guy who was a regular on one, and when I visited him on location he was literally falling asleep in his breakfast because he was so exhausted from working until the small hours the night before.
That was *the* thing I looked forward to, seeing an episode of The Rockford Files on NBC every Friday night. The character Garner played always had that sarcastic wit, and was so good at BSing his way out of trouble!
Ken Seabury That’s right! It was Friday nights, thanks for reminding me, I looked forward to the show knowing I had a whole weekend of no school and could stay up to watch it!,, Great memories, and it seemed like he never got old until the 1990’s.
I met Mr. Garner in August of 1985 at Pine Valley G.C. in New Jersey. I purposely sliced my ball on #15 to hit in into his fairway so I could say hello. I was nervous and called him Mr. Rockford. He loved it...CLASS ACT
James Garner is possibly the classiest guy every to come out of Hollywood! I recall realy liking him in The Great Escape as a kid and later in the Rockford Files. I also like the fact that he has stayed married to the same lady for so many years. That is a rarity in his business. A good man!
imo. all of the Rockford Files are great.however the ones with Angel Martin are some of the best/funniest ones ever. to bad that there are no actors like James Garner anymore. one of a kind.
James Garner reminds me of Burt Reynolds - both action stars with that cool sardonic sense of humour .Also both ended up in a lot of pain with the roles that they essayed ; Reynolds lost his good looks in the end with a reconstructed face .Whoever said movie making was glamorous obviously didn't try his luck in front of the camera . RIP to both of them .
@SuperBagshot I think we would all like to see him come off as THE Jim Rockford we know from the series, but that is unreasonable. He's a human, and it sounds like he had some gripes. I saw one where he went off even worse on his relationship between him and NBC toward the end, the whole thing about him owing them 4 more episodes or something - thus the reason we got those reDux in the 90s. I must say though, the Rockford files are my all-time favorite TV Program -- Go Jimbo! -BrianDP
The Rockford Files one of the few connecting points for my dad and I. We would watch it for the hour that it was on and not speak, but there was a connection. what's that Richie Brockelman?
This was recommended to me for some reason so I will ask the following question that has plagued me since 1974: I watched the show during its first run. I was 23 years old at the time and developed a kind of imaginary "crush" on the girl at the beach in the intro. The picture was the next to the last one at the very end. I used to wonder whether she and/or her companion ever know that they had been photographed. So, decades passed and I forgot about her of course until this video showed up. I found and played the intro again and even though I'm now 71 years old my heart jumped when I saw that beach picture in the intro again. This time I had more tools available to me. I downloaded the entire thing, edited it in Video Pad and extracted a screen shot of the beach picture. I used Google Images and Tineye (both reverse image apps) to look for the original photo but nothing came up. I did however, finally see that the image is of a blond girl wearing a bikini and a guy lying next to her. It made me wonder what had ever become of them: Did they get married and eventually have grandchildren or what? I then looked for the two co-creators of the show--they're both dead. So my question is: Does anyone know anything about the picture to which I am referring? I will post a copy of it on my YT channel for anyone who cares to refresh their memory. Finally, now that more Rockford files videos are showing up as suggestions I'm going to cross-post this. I apologize in advance to anyone who is offended by this.
Every few years they talk about a "Rockford" reboot; I think it could be done pretty well with the right casting (although not Vince Vaughn for god's sake). The key is that while Rockford had many humorous moments and funny characters (Angel!), it was not a stupid slapstick comedy.
Yeah, and it always was brand new. But the thing I found the most puzzling, was how he was ever able to continue driving that car with what must have been sky-rocketing insurance premiums?
They just don't make men or great actors like James Garner, he was a born star. Watched him as a child growing up and there will never be a man like Jim. One in a trillion. We loved you then and will love you forever. RIP Jimbo. Thank wisdom for TV and technology with ghost in the machine.
crazy how he became an actor.ua-cam.com/video/w_03n_PyVqA/v-deo.html If a lady had not pulled out of a parking place in front of him, he would have never been an actor. He pulled into the parking place and saw a sign with a name on the business of an old high school buddy. He went in to see if it was him and it was, he offered him work, he was a talent agent and producer. Jim was looking for work, he never thought to be an actor. ua-cam.com/video/FHaJ0A8MiEk/v-deo.html
I am a huge Rockford Files fan.I grew up in the70s and that show just takes me back. Not to mention it's good tv and they don;t make them like that anymore.
RIP you will be missed. I still enjoy this show to this day. Where else can you have a kick ass detective, driving an awesome car, smoking a cig. Sure don't see that now! And the stories I used to hear about the filming of this show always made my eyes light up. And that VOICE of yours made me melt....... A true legend is gone.
My two favorite Rockford lines: "You better be reaching for a sandwich, cause I'm gonna make you eat what you pull outa your pocket." (While going nose-to-nose with a young wanna be gangster reaching in the jacket of his three piece suit.) "Now you know the sound of one hand clapping." (After his obnoxious hippy female acquaintance gets punched in the face by a gangster.) My favorite Rockford episodes: All that had Isaak Hayes co-star in..... "Hey, Rockfish"
I am sorry to say I didn’t watch The Rockford Files when it first aired. Through the ‘miracle’ of reruns though, I had discovered this gem. The show has a reality to it of a guy using his talents to eke out a living at $200 a day (plus expenses). He wasn’t’ high-flutin’ or in the gutter, just a regular joe. That is why it endeared itself to many viewers. Have the whole series on DVD now so I can watch them all. Over and over. R.I.P. Mr. Garner. The world misses you.
My Friend met Jim at a parade in Jim's home town of Norman, Oklahoma at the 2007 Centennial parade. Mr. Garner was the Grand Marshall. My friend, Scott, said he was really nice, and called Scott 'son'. I'm a big fan of R.F., RIP James.
"Thank you James for entertaining us for all those years. We love you brother."
KirkSH52 He was awesome. Loved him when he played Wyatt Earp alongside Bruce Willis' Tom Mix in Sunset 1988.
But he had NO love for Bruce, all due to his on-set behavior and attitude.
I can still watch Hawaii Five O, Kojak, Barnaby Jones, Cannon, etc.... but Rockford is the only one I can honestly say I still enjoy watching.
I LOVED THE ROCKFORD FILES.
Rockford and Barney Miller
Me too
I loved his interaction with Stuart Margolin as Angel. They were brilliant.
My favorite Rockford episodes were always the ones where Angel was in the episode. They were great.
Yeah angel could be funny.
I loved this show, but couldn’t stand the character Angel
Truely one of the last Americans.... Served in two wars, a wounded veteran, lived through The Depression. He's the MAN......
James was a truly great, sardonic, saavy character actor. one of the best EVER. he sure paid a price in injuries tho. nice interview clip. thanks.
Favourite actor of mine always made me smile.
RIP Mr Garner.
He's damn right about how tough a grind a TV series can be. I knew a guy who was a regular on one, and when I visited him on location he was literally falling asleep in his breakfast because he was so exhausted from working until the small hours the night before.
Jim Garner was cooool. Would show up every year for the month of May for the Indy 500 in the 80's and 90's RIP.
What a terrific guy, met him a couple of times, a real decent person. When you talk with him it's like he's known you forever. Miss him, an Original.
I would of loved to have met james garner you were very lucky.
A NATURAL actor , he did not have to "act" , just say the lines ! So great !!
That was *the* thing I looked forward to, seeing an episode of The Rockford Files on NBC every Friday night. The character Garner played always had that sarcastic wit, and was so good at BSing his way out of trouble!

Cole Thornton Great story 😂😂
Love the anecdote ...by the way HE WAS Mr Rockford.
James Garner was a true badass. One of a kind, thx....
James Garner is possibly the classiest guy every to come out of Hollywood! I recall realy liking him in The Great Escape as a kid and later in the Rockford Files. I also like the fact that he has stayed married to the same lady for so many years. That is a rarity in his business. A good man!
He was called the last real man. S'truth.
I like him too.
Absolute CLASS!
ROCKFORD was a great show. Jim Garner was a great actor, and a likeable person.
James Garner was always my favorite on TV whether it was Maverick, Rockford, He had that unique personality and lines that was truly his.

Craig Seamus

Craig Seamus As was said in GRUMPY OLD MEN, pull your bottom lip over your head... and swallow!
SuperPat88 does that make you a grumpy old man?
Rip James garner.one of my favourite tv shows ever was the Rockford files.
Hell yes same here when I was growing up. Better Days back then........
Gave me a lot of pleasure back in the 70's and if anything even more just now. TVM Mr Garner (if you read this), nice one.
James Garner is by far the best actor ever! I would love to meet this guy and have him autograph my firebird.
He seems like a very genuine and down to earth type of dude. Love the fact that he was thinking of other actors and not just himself.
My favourite show of all time.
I still watch Rockford Files every night. 😊
As do I.
you could put this show on right now and it would get ratings
i love this show
Mr. Garner stated in his autobiography that he never would have made it through Rockford without cannabis & Vicodin. He was usually always in pain.
Best TV show ever, and Garner was amazing, Class act all of the way!
I’ve watched the Rockford files series numerous times.
Great Actor..
Looooove Jimmy Garner!!
He 's my idol. The quintessential hard-luck hero!!
imo. all of the Rockford Files are great.however the ones with Angel Martin are some of the best/funniest ones ever. to bad that there are no actors like James Garner anymore. one of a kind.
sadly missed forever...
James Garner was a great actor...Loved The Rockford Files...and Maverick...
Did great job in the Great Escape
I love Rockford Files! I loved the Trailer! I want one just like it!
Best opening titles ever and possibly the best ever theme tune. Oh yeah, Gretchen Corbett best looking woman on planet Earth?
Beautiful Beth Davenport....Rockford was a lucky man....
a great actor

I know I keep commenting on this but I liked the rockedfiles he was cool.
greatest actor of all time
It true when you're tall standing on your feet for sixteen hours a day during physical work for a long time it takes a toll on your body.
One of my favorites.
Lovely James Garner.
I couldn't agree more with you.
Who dislikes James Garner? Rockford's gonna get you!
Greatest show ever on TV
Bob Costas - is that his name? - was and is always a great host and interviewer. Wish he still did more than sports shows.
Bob Costas is an anti-gun Jackass!

One of the last real "movie stars." James Garner did the Baja 1000 in a modified Olds 442 😁
So where's the rest of the interview?
ONE cool acter .
GREAT VIDEO ! SUNDAY 6/16/24 JUNE 16, 2024
_The House on Willis Avenue_ 2:10
@SuperBagshot
I don't think it was whinning. It just stated what caused his health problems.
Leo Gordon was a genuine tough guy.
Netflix should put this series on.
The best possible serious
Who doesn't like the Rockford Files?
Support your local Sheriff, another great with Jim.
Rockford inspired my friend to retire in a trailer by the water.
The Rockford Files Created by Roy Huggins & Stephen J.Cannell
That's a tough TV series, I got hurt less in football
James Garner, a standup guy, Bob Costas not so much
One Opinion - 1970s Top 5 TV -
All in the Family
MASH
Rockford FIles
Saturday Night Live
The Tonight Show (Johnny Carson)
Bob should have asked him does he still charge $200 a day plus expenses.
James Garner is my cousin lol
Ive seen H 50,Magaret was a bad MoFo,I liked them both,But because of a friend I was exposed to the Rockford files more.

No James Garner no Rockford Files.
LOL!!!!!!My little 38!!
We had a talk.
RIP James Garner
He lived in a Trailer, But drove a New Firebird? That always puzzled Me?
+Johnny Yum Seems ok to me! :)
+Johnny Yum probably used his dad's address for the finance company.
Yeah, and it always was brand new. But the thing I found the most puzzling, was how he was ever able to continue driving that car with what must have been sky-rocketing insurance premiums?
He must have paid for the repairs, out of pocket.
Maybe. I find it interesting that some really great actors, like Steve McQueen, and Paul Newman, also had an affinity for driving cars fast.
Hey ... I just recorded this episode. About to watch it.
Aca en la Argentina la conocimos como archivo confidencial me gustaba el auto Pontiac que se usaba en la serie
En Chile la serie se conocio como Los Archivos de Rockford. Su Pontiac Firebird Esprit 1974 es leyenda.
rockfish
like
A 38 caliber automatic revolver??? So pull the trigger once and all 6 rounds get shot at once???
Angel, I may have to start studying Law. This littegating or mittigating arguements.
Nicest guy in Hollywood, a class act. god bless ya jimmy..!

❤❤👍🙌
ROCKFORD FILES WAS THE BEST SHOW TO GRACE TELEVISION!!
Absolutely ! ! !
A bit of a stretch. But definitely an iconic show.
One of my favorite actors. He was so smooth, yet tough. RIP James Garner. Thanks for the memories!
I will second that!
One of my all time favorite actors. He had a genuine folksy way about him that was very likeable.
A class act all the way. I miss the Rockford Files.
RIP you will be missed. I still enjoy this show to this day. Where else can you have a kick ass detective, driving an awesome car, smoking a cig. Sure don't see that now! nobody will replace him , another gone for ever
Garner is a superb interview. Smart, tough and likable.
What a great actor loved the Rockford files
Loved The Rockford files and Magnum P.I...Starskey and Hutch was pretty good. The Incredible Hulk. Wonderful.
2021 television is junk compared to that stuff.
James Garner is one of the good guys. Loved him as Rockford!
My two favorite Rockford lines:
"You better be reaching for a sandwich, cause I'm gonna make you eat what you pull outa your pocket."

I was sure I knew every line from Rockford Files, but you've got me stumped with the sandwich line. Which episode is that from?
