    As a young boy in Ozanam Home for Boys outside of Kansas City, Mo., we traveled to California in a Nash Rambler, eventually hooking up with Route 66. While the times were not the best in my life that bit of nostalgia is brought to life with this song and "I'm Going To Kansas City" since I am from Chicago.

    Great memories are brought back by this tune including remembering how much new cars cost in the 1960's. The pictured Rambler could be had for less than $2000. Even Corvettes ran about $4500. And yeah I recall gas prices being 30 to 35 cents a gallon when I was young.

    I first heard this song in a college dorm party. They used it as a drinking song and everyone drank whenever they said "beep beep." It was certainly entertaining to watch as the song sped up. Everyone definitely had a lot of fun!

    We would play this song at the skating rink and tell the kids, "the faster the song goes, the faster you can go". When the kids got older, they would bring their own kids in and ask, "Do you guys still play Beep Beep?" This song will never die.

    This is one of my most favorite songs from the era. I just love the way the song gets faster to go along with what is said in the song. I especially loved the last line. "Hey, buddy. How do you get this thing out of second gear?"

    dad owned a 68 Rambler took those road dips well! On the way to our grammas house, my mom took the freeway. We always watched the semi-trucks wanting them to blow their horns. Well, they got an idea besides just blowing horns. Four of them truckers boxed us in 'bout 30' around and all blew horns... what a memory of life. My dad also ordered "Forty Funky Hits" record set, my siblings and I would pace the floor listening to this song. Gaining speed. Thanks for posting this.

    Love this! My sister and I used to listen this on our "Funky Favorites" record along with Snoopy and the Red Baron. My aunt's brother had a Rambler with a worked over Ford 289 and toploader 4 speed. This song makes me think of that sleeper every time I hear it. I haven't heard this in over 20 years. Thanks!

    When I heard the last part of this song, I can't believe it took me until adulthood, to look up the lyrics and find out what the end was. The guy was saying, "Hey buddy, how can I get this car out of second gear?"!

    Great vid!! & the car brings back memories, too. We had a 61 4-door with the OHV engine & auto tranny ( which btw was DEFINITELY a Borg Warner), also power steering & Posi diff. Me& my brothers used to drive it in High school (late 60's & early 70's) I had a 62 Classic wagon in about 71.

    When this song came out, we happened to have a (little) Nash Rambler station wagon. I remember being very proud that our car was on the radio. But my dad never drove faster than 20 m.p.h., so I could not relate well to the idea of our car ever going that fast. But that's okay. It was fun.

    Paul, thanks for posting this. Comments are all interesting, but my purpose was completely different. My Dad was a total Cadillac fan, I vaguely remember him buying one every two years or so. I am talking some 4 decades ago, before he passed away when I was 12 years old. Anyway, for some reason this song came in to mind as one of my Dad's favorites. After all this time, I see why!

    Funny song. Always laughed when it was played on the radio. Hated the Rambler car though. My dad brought a brand new Rambler Classic in 1961 and that piece of crap spent more time in the shop than with us. Always were put in old junky loaners. He gave up our 1951 Chrysler New Yorker, which ran just fine for that rotten Rambler.

  • @AshburnStadium
    @AshburnStadium 15 років тому

    Mom's red '68 had the 3 on the tree, too, and it was a great car, too. Mom had that car from 1972-75.
    A Cadillac pulled out in front of her one time and she t-boned it (she got it fixed) - I parodied this song when that happened!
    "For a Rambler to hit a Caddy would be a big disgrace!" ;-)
    I later had a '64 Classic 770, but it was automatic. Mom also had a '59 American and a '60 Cross Country wagon.
    To this day, I call Cadillacs "Rambler chasers".

    Great job on the video. I just bought a 61 Rambler Classic with a 6 cyl. engine and 3 on the tree. It was owned by some old guy in Colorado and only has 57K original miles on it. He had it repainted in 2002 and it looks and runs great. There's still a few of them out there but you have to look a little harder every year....

    i had a 66 station wagon,3 on the tree, and the shifting fingers would hang, had to get out and jiggle them, sometimes at lights..lol and my older brother had the classic sedan, when he came back from viet nam, when i left for the navy he canabalized (sp) everything he could off mine, and left the 'hulk' on someones side street. my dad got notices to come to the impound and get it, for 3 yrs afterwards..
    they WERE great cars though.

    I don't think they changed the design on these for some time. I can remember my sisters first car was a 1965 red and white Rambler and it looked almost just like this car. It was a 6 cyl with an automatic trans. It was actually kind of fast for what it was, I remember we got it up to 90 once

    "Beep Beep" is a novelty song by The Playmates. It describes an apparent competition between the drivers of a Cadillac and a Nash Rambler on the road, leading to a surprise revelation as to why the Rambler is racing the Cadillac.
    The song is an example of accelerando, in which the tempo of the song gradually increases throughout the song..........Eddie

    • @barbarakrall4331
      @barbarakrall4331 7 років тому +1

      In addition to the accelerando, each verse of the song modulates a half step up into a different key, heightening the effect of the tempo increase.

    At my school when I was about 9, we had a songbook we'd sing from that had this song, and it was always my favourite. With Nash unheard of in Australia and me being the class car-nut, I had offered to show the class what they were. It was well before the interweb and I had to look them up at a library. I drew (ok, traced) a picture and copied some basic specs to read out to the class....to a mass yawn : (
    Thanks for posting, time to show my kids ; )

    I used to have one just about like that one (except mine was a 4-door). The Nash Rambler was almost exactly the same car right down to the flathead 6 with the carb mounted to the head, and a piece of conduit for the exhaust manifold. Fairly sturdy, really simple little car.

    Believe it or not, the man behind the Nash Rambler was none other than Mitt Romney's father George, who was the CEO of American Motors Corp. I had a '64 Rambler Classic 770 sedan, with an OHV 196 six-cylinder engine and an automatic trans. The shifter went PRN21L. If you put it in "2", the car started in 2nd gear, and if you put it in "1", the car started in 1st gear and went through all 3 gears.

    I have a '63 rambler convert. I am in the middle of some restoration. Honestly this car that i have needs to be stripped to the frame and then rebuilt. But i think i can get away w/ rebuilding the engine and interior and then taking care of the paint. Amazingly my car still has the original paint from 63 on it and its still in pretty good shape.

    I had a '64 Classic 770 sedan in dark blue that I paid $100 for back in the mid-1990s. Unfortunately, the OHV 6-cylinder engine blew on me soon afterwards.
    Anyway, referring to the "second gear" line in the song, the automatic transmission shifter went as follows:
    P-R-N-2-1-L
    Apparently, it had the same shifting setup as the Ford-O-Matic found in the '65 Mustang. If you put it in "2", it started in 2nd gear. If you kept it in "1", you got all 3 gears.
