  • In this video I will show you how to glaze to your oil paintings. Some painters view glazing as a bit of a mystery - it isn't! In this video I show you how to do it on two paintings. The technique is quite simply adding a colour mixed with oil to a dry painting.

WHAT GREAT PAINTINGS. I ALMOST FAINTED WHEN YOU SLAPPED THAT MUCH RED ON THE FIRST PAINTING, BUT IT TURNED OUT SO BEAUTIFUL AND LUMINOUS. BRAVO!!!

I had a wonderful art teacher in high school. He was a bit weird but I learned so much from him. He enter two of my junior year pieces in the state exhibitions. One took 2nd prize and the the other took 1st. Because I was in school and they were entered in a state contest, they became property of the state when I won. I did get the trophy and the ribbons. The one thing I still use to this day, I graduated before the normal age in 1967, is he told me when I was not sure of the color or balance of a painting, drawing or whatever I was working on to turn it upside down. Stand back and look at it and you will see immediately what is not correct or out of sorts. It also gives you proportions on objects. That is such a priceless wonderful tool that I have used for 55 years. Just a suggestion because I know you are the teacher but it is a tool that always worked for me. I had that teacher for 3 years and every time I paint a painting or draw a picture I turn it upside down to check it and hear him telling me, "you can now see your mistakes or victories." I could not afford to go to art school so I have always been more than appreciative of those who took the time to teach me some of what they knew. You are now one of those respected people. Thank you again.

I dearly love this painting. I tend to have paintings set up in my living room and paint for a while, go do things that need doing elsewhere, but stop and do a little work any time I pass by.

When you are putting on the glaze, it gives a more brilliant colour to the painting. One cannot get that when painting with acrylics. So I am seriously thinking of going into oils soon. Thank you for posting. Enjoyed watching you paint. Thank you again.

I started in oils, way back when (before acrylics was ever even thought of!) - then in college tried acrylics when they first came out - then to watercolor, which was my favorite for years and years - then to acrylics for several years now - but I too am going to start doing some oils again. There are just some things you can do with oils that no other mediums accommodate! Happy painting!

Is this actually glazing? I always thought of glazing as a very transparent layer that's tinting the color like a photo filter, so almost no color. I feel like what you did here is simply painting the final layer of oil paints, although you wiped off quite a lot of the paint which kind of makes it a non-standard step. In any case I appreciate the video as I was very inspired and learnt some things. You are a way more competent painter than I am, so I'm in no way trying to correct or criticize you, these are just my thoughts.
