- In this video I will show you how to glaze to your oil paintings. Some painters view glazing as a bit of a mystery - it isn't! In this video I show you how to do it on two paintings. The technique is quite simply adding a colour mixed with oil to a dry painting.

I love the phrase “ think about painting as visual poetry” and a lovely way of glazing.
great demo Stuart, and the "hanging out with you" atmosphere is fantastic, too.
WHAT GREAT PAINTINGS. I ALMOST FAINTED WHEN YOU SLAPPED THAT MUCH RED ON THE FIRST PAINTING, BUT IT TURNED OUT SO BEAUTIFUL AND LUMINOUS. BRAVO!!!
I had a wonderful art teacher in high school. He was a bit weird but I learned so much from him. He enter two of my junior year pieces in the state exhibitions. One took 2nd prize and the the other took 1st. Because I was in school and they were entered in a state contest, they became property of the state when I won. I did get the trophy and the ribbons. The one thing I still use to this day, I graduated before the normal age in 1967, is he told me when I was not sure of the color or balance of a painting, drawing or whatever I was working on to turn it upside down. Stand back and look at it and you will see immediately what is not correct or out of sorts. It also gives you proportions on objects. That is such a priceless wonderful tool that I have used for 55 years. Just a suggestion because I know you are the teacher but it is a tool that always worked for me. I had that teacher for 3 years and every time I paint a painting or draw a picture I turn it upside down to check it and hear him telling me, "you can now see your mistakes or victories." I could not afford to go to art school so I have always been more than appreciative of those who took the time to teach me some of what they knew. You are now one of those respected people. Thank you again.
I really enjoy, not only your teaching, but your humor. Love the results!
I was about to give up on finding a good glazing technique and I finally found you! This video is Gold. Thank you for sharing your expertise.❤
I want to Thank you. I have been an artist all of my life, I am 53 now and watching your videos has helped me more than any teacher or books. I place high value on your advice and watching you paint is like being in the presence of the old masters. Your instruction is priceless and should be sought out by all artists nomater how good they think that they are. Thank you my friend.
I absolutely love this man. He has a dry humor and simple but oh so helpful sense. His is charming and I love his work. He has given me so much help. Keep up this great help and work.
I’d
I am totally mesmerised watching your painting come to life with your expert use of decorator's brushes and kitchen towels. I'm not a landscape lover at all, but you have inspired me to do some. Thank you Stuart. Looking forward to your next video.
I dearly love this painting. I tend to have paintings set up in my living room and paint for a while, go do things that need doing elsewhere, but stop and do a little work any time I pass by.
When you are putting on the glaze, it gives a more brilliant colour to the painting. One cannot get that when painting with acrylics. So I am seriously thinking of going into oils soon. Thank you for posting. Enjoyed watching you paint. Thank you again.
I started in oils, way back when (before acrylics was ever even thought of!) - then in college tried acrylics when they first came out - then to watercolor, which was my favorite for years and years - then to acrylics for several years now - but I too am going to start doing some oils again. There are just some things you can do with oils that no other mediums accommodate! Happy painting!
Bravo! Your paintings are extraordinarily beautiful and harmonious. Thank you so much for this amazing and educational video on oil painting techniques and demonstration of how you paint landscapes with magnificent. ❤❤❤❤❤xxxx
I don't use paint thinners or turpentine either. I don't use acrylic as well never cared for it. Besides oil holds it value unlike acrylic. And oil paintings. last for many many years Oil is my medium.and always will.love your style.you are down to earth and and don't try to flashy like some of these other you tube artists and much more talented.
I love that 'turn your mistake into something worth looking at' that is a wonderful lesson. I am so binging on your video's at the moment as so inspiring thank you.
Breath taking scene! I wish I could make my landscapes tell a story like yours does. Your style is fascinating as well, and you convey a sense of kindness and wisdom that can bring light to a dark day.
Well said, Matthew!
Love the glazing technique, I will try it next week.
Mr. Davies, thank you for sharing your wisdom, knowledge and it's an absolute pleasure. I had searched long and hard for instruction and you sir, are an amazing mentor.
Shocked me silly when you put that glaze on, absolutely love it ! I will be more daring in the future
If I could have just heard what you just said 38 years ago that you paint it with just your memory. I should have not wasted my parent's money on studying in University (Fine Arts). Haha. God has blessed you with such a beautiful gift! Thanks for making this video!
Sooooo relaxing watching, listening & learning. I didn't think the painting could look any better really until you started glazing. Takes it to another level. I've said it before and I'll say it again, truly inspiring.
Thank you, Stuart, for demonstrating. I will try glazing in the future. I need to learn to relax.
Thank you so much for doing such informative videos! I not only learned about painting, composition, etc. - but I've learned (finally) how to use UA-cam so I can follow and get notifications from my favorite artists.
Stuart, these are magnificent! Thank you for doing this video. I learned, as I always do, a great deal. Looking forward to the next one!❤️💙❤️
Words are superfluous, Stuart, when it comes to your work and your presentation. I enjoy every video and wait impatiently for the next.
Very. Lovely as always 🌷🦋
I am brand new to oil painting and you have given me so much in just a few videos that I watched. I can't wait to watch more.
Is this actually glazing? I always thought of glazing as a very transparent layer that's tinting the color like a photo filter, so almost no color. I feel like what you did here is simply painting the final layer of oil paints, although you wiped off quite a lot of the paint which kind of makes it a non-standard step. In any case I appreciate the video as I was very inspired and learnt some things. You are a way more competent painter than I am, so I'm in no way trying to correct or criticize you, these are just my thoughts.
Lovely.
You cleared a lot of my questions up with this tutorial.
Warm and dramatic result. Like the size of board. Thank u very much
Easily my favorite painter on UA-cam already.
Thanks so much for another very informative lesson. I can’t wait to try this...your style is quite mesmerizing. So enjoyable to immerse myself into your videos. Very helpful to me to be told to relax and to walk away after 20 minutes and then return. I’ve never heard that before. You’re a wonderful teacher. Keep them coming!
WOW! This is absolutely stunning! Beautiful.
Great, what I like about your demo is your comments and humour, just love it.
What a fantastic teacher. So happy I've found your work ❤️
Дорогой Стюарт! Ваши потрясающие пейзажи трогают меня до глубины души! За 20 минут ваша картина пережила несколько характеров! Это невероятно! Какое счастье видеть ваше творение! Каждая ваша картина это шедевр!❤
Your carefree painting over the dry layer is motivational. At first, it made me gasp. Lol you inspire me to be more loose and realize I cannot 'break' my painting. I am going to chuck the paint on today!
I’m brand new to oil painting and think of glazing as applying a filter similar to photo editing options on Instagram. Sometimes you don’t want a glaze. Sometimes you do and it really adds so much to the original. Like fine tuning. Another great video full of encouragement thank you!
really enjoy this video, always great tips, this painting is stunning. Your voice is so relaxing and I think we all love your humour!
I’ve been studying you for 11minths now. I like what your doing these days.
Beautiful Stuart! Excellent and helpful techniques. Thank you!!
It's been a great day watching you paint today all day I love your technique
Love the effects you get, trying it out
I have learned so much from your videos, taking away the mystery of glazing in such an easy going manner is a wonderful help and explains it in a controlled manner that makes sense.
Thank you so much for your generosity!
Loved this glazing. What an affect!
And it's a pleasure to stay listening and watching your work process from the very begging to the last minute of it
Love it! And the music was the perfect touch and feeling at the end! Thank You!
Oh, finally. Thank you so very much. I don’t care what it’s called, intuitive, spontaneous...whatever. I’m tossing all those tedious classes (and instructors) out the window and going with the moment . I adore making a mess! Carry on, maestro.
It’s been 2 days that I am watching your videos and they are just brilliant. Gained much info on oils , thank you😊
So beautiful the effect of the glazing! Thank you
“Very Interesting to hear you teach and work;because most viewers like myself for the first time watching get more out of their time ,meaning there are not many questions left to ask. It sounds like your one of the master painters.
Wonderful,as always..😇 by your teaching, wisdom and humor! Thank you so much, very uplifting!💖
I just love your videos being very instructive and a lot of humour and the feeling of being in the studio with you! Thank you so much Stuart for this glazing lesson sensational!

Yes! I have enjoyed it as I always do. Oh my goodness, the red glazing brought the painting to full circle, leaving it perfect. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you Mr Davies! You got me started on a new adventure, I always wanted to paint, never knew how to go about it. Now you showed me the way and changed my life! Hope to come to France in the future, you are a wonderful teacher

What a transformation ....... such a moody finished piece. Thanks from Ontario Canada
Watching again. Quite striking after the changes you made.
It never ceases to amaze me how differently artist paint. Everyone has their own techniques and tips that produce masterpieces. I have learned so much from this tutorial. Things I didn't know were acceptable practices in art. It's helping me to understand the importance of loosening up with my own techniques. Thank you!
Love your glazing and paint over techniques and use of paper towel and q-tips to liven your painting.
Never saw this technique before this painting. Love it and will try it. I love all mediums. This is a new one for the oils. I am mostly self taught but even with that you can still tell what it is when I finish. Must not be too bad because I can never keep my pieces in the house. People always walk off with them. Thank you for sharing. I truly appreciate it.
Thanks Mr. Davies!
I like the blue shop towels.
This is brilliant!!!! I love the colors!!!
You’re so funny! You apologize for teaching something new and important. I learn something I need to know every time I watch your videos and you are very entertaining. So glad I found you!

I found your videos a couple of days ago and immediately I subscribed. You have an amazing talent. I am far away from your paintting skills, just beginner. The most important lesson I have learned from you is not to afraid to try. Such an important lesson. Its so relaxing to look how do manage the colors and handle the brushes. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and skills with us!!!

Fantastic transforming effect Stuart. Really inspiring. Thank you and stay well. You and yours and all viewers.
This painting reminds me of Turner. Its gorgeous. It’s very relaxing to watch you paint and to learn from you. Thank you!!
That was very instructive, thank you. You have a pleasant voice, so I was glad because I could watch it all the way to the end. I love your paintings.
That was amazing. I haven’t seen glazing demonstrated this well before. Was helpful to watch how you turned what looked like a mess into so,etching that worked
Thank you so much for this enjoyable and informative video! I am mainly an en plein air watercolor painter, and want to get back into oils. This has helped I believe!
