Magnífico coral!!! El silencio que sigue al primer "warum" es realmente intimidante . Una obra soberbia donde se palpa a flor de piel la inquietud existencial de Brahms y expresada con belleza inefable...
I sang part of this piece for my choir/show choir auditions at my school! (I got into the top choir!!!!) It's such a pretty song! Nice to listen to while doing homework! :)
Thanks for the upload! "The Warum motet has been acknowledged by most authorities to be Brahms's greatest achievement in unaccompanied choral music. O Heiland, though it has received less attention, is one of his most successful fusions of old and new ideas; he himself considered it worthy of publication beside the Warum motet." Virginia Hancock, The Compleat Brahms, edited by Leon Botstein, 1999, p. 354.
"Why is the light (that is, life) given to him who is weary of soul?" This despairing cry from the Book of Job has never been more poignantly set. And this motet cannot be as effectively sung in translation; even French pourqoi does not have the force of German warum. The many accidentals in the first section are due to a very old (long before Bach) way of handling canonic entry, with each voice entering on the dominant (5-note separation) of the preceding, so the resulting harmony wanders from d minor to a minor to e minor to b minor and finally to f# minor before returning to the monolithic "Warum?", which is itself a deceptive cadence, because it moves first from D major to g minor, then from A major to the home key of d minor. It takes a fully self-confidant genius like Brahms, totally in control of his technique and his talent, to sound so lost and uncertain.
NDR is actually the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (North German Radio) which is based in Hamburg. Deutschlandradio is Germany's national public radio broadcaster.
This is the choir of the National German Radio. Personally, I like the compound meter sections with just a bit more motion than this recording, even, but I'd certainly be willing to check out other interpretations!
BTW, it's no coincidence that the piece is dedicated to Philipp Spitta, the great Bach scholar and biographer. Also note: the piano staves at the bottom are included for rehearsal only.
I believe this is a French choir but for the life of me I cannot find the information to confirm but the performance is amazing. My only reservation is the tempo of the "Langsam und sanft " section which it is indeed slow and soft, I heard another recording once that took this just a bit slower and it was magical.

Extremely good, and a wonderful interpretation of the piece, not to mention how nice it is to read along with it!
Entrañable Brahms...
One of my all time favorite choral works. Thank you for posting this.
One of my favourite Master Choral pieces!!.. Tremendous performing!..Bravo!!😉

I'd definitely agree with the compound meters needing more movement, but I loooooove the texture of the chorale with this tempo.... Scrumptious!!
こうして聴くと綺麗…🌟
Vielen herzlichen Dank!
Wonderful!

Brahms: Good news, men: You get an extended cadence! :D
Thanks, very interesting!
You missed "Der Abschied" from Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, toward the end of the 4th episode, Fear and Trembling.
Thank You!!!....
Brahms is the fire.

TOO MANY ACCIDENTALS! I feel cross-eyed.
"Fächerfuge" is the German technical term for this kind of fugue. So "many accidentals" are unavoidable (d a b f#).
