With its graceful jazz body and classic f-holes, the 335 harkens back to the blues masters of yesteryear. Beautiful details, such as an elegant tiger maple veneer, accent the natural wood grain and provide a gentlemanly feel. With its timeless appeal, the 335 is a guitar that lovers of retro music can't resist.
The inner cavity of this semi-hollow guitar has undergone six polishings, double the ordinary, for a purer sound resonance. We've also treated the wood for clean and transparent sound with a classic 70s tone that's rich and thick.
Every detail of the 335 has been processed with high-precision craftsmanship for a comfortable feel. From the shape of the body to the delicate fringe edge, every touch of the 335 will inspire your soul.
The 335's two closed humbucker pickups come individually equipped with coil-splitting functionality for a total of eight tonal combinations. So whether you prefer a mellow old-school sound or the lightly crunchy British style, the highly versatile 335 allows you to switch between solo and rhythm tones effortlessly.
The neck-through construction provides superior sustain performance and increased strength. In addition, each guitar is manually processed for optimal resonance and ideal tone.

When the Gibson came out in 1958, the guitar cost $335 which is $3,289 as of today 10/23/2022. I think you meant to say 2800 dollars and said $28,000 by mistake.
Yeah totally!
Ah, confirmation
Yes, I thought that was a bit steep for 1958. A really nice brand new car went for three grand.
There was this guy named Alvin Lee (RIP), you might have heard of him. He played a 335-styled guitar and he played it fast and loud!
Thank you! I just ordered one and this video already makes me feel great about it.
Have a same-styled Grote at half the price. I do setups, so did some sanding/filing on the fret ends... frets were level and neck relief were fine. Just lowered the strings a hair, cleaned the grunge from the fretboard, put on some quality strings and it is a daily player... Feels like a strat but sounds like a lower output LP... reminds me of my goldtop/P90s. I think all of these Chinese builds are very good and likely from similar, if not the same, factory.
With the way CNC precision is today, a lot of entry level instruments are relatively good, with a bit of work. I've got a Bass from Donner, and a LP style from Monoprice. I dont reach for either on the daily because it's just nicer to play my Pacifica 612. There is a notible difference in quality, weight, and feel. But with a bit of work, both the Donner and Monoprice soon became solid standby guitars to pick up when I didnt feel like taking my daily out.. Plus i don't feel too guilty hanging an inexpensive guitar on a wall for easy access.
Saw your video and Sean Daniels video for this... ending up ordering one on Amazon and got it already. VERY impressive for 320 bucks. Easily as good as an Epiphone 335 at guitar center for $500-600 ... the build quality on the Donner is great and it really screams too..
Is it really worth it, I saw some comments that it would be better to get a used Epiphone than this
@@ElIsraelJijijiji I would say get one, but if you could find somewhere to try one out i think you would figure out pretty fast that Epiphone has nothing in their line up that would compare. I know it sounds crazy but it is true. I have been playing over fifty years and owned every high end guitar made and although people who haven't played a Donner DJP-1000 will say i am crazy but this Donner would do good against any of them. Certainly no Epiphone's made that are as good and no Gretsch Electromatics either. You will have to find out for yourself though.
@@dlmullins9054 I'm sorry you replied me too late, I've bought an Ibanez as73
Great review. Looks like a nice guitar. I've always had inexpensive guitars. MIJ Strat (80s), Mexican Tele, Epi Wildkat etc. A few years ago I was able to get a Memphis Custom Shop hollow body Les Paul w/Bigsby. Would have been about $3500 if new. I would say that with the exception of the great fret work on the Gibson, which allows for super low action, there isn't much difference in the workmanship between the Les Paul and the $400 Epi Wildkat. I have, however, upgraded the hardware and electronics on that one. I may have to get one of these 335 copies. I would probably put on a Bigsby, a Wilkinson roller bridge and locking tuners. Always enjoy your videos
A nice fret level, and nut height adjust and it will be gold at 1mm action and barely any relief.
I've been eyeing this for a while. Was not comfortable spending so little. All my guitars are at least double this price. But your video pushed me to finally order it in red.....Thanks
How do you like the guitar now that you've had it for a while?
DAVID, Are the pickups alnico 5 or ceramic ?
I love the dark almost wine red type color
Man, It does sound Nice! And the Looks? It Is Gorgeous !!!
I bought that same 1 for Black Friday... wow what a bargain for such a beautiful Guitar. Sounds great as well. Its my 2nd Guitar from Donner, my 1st is the DLP & that sounds/looks great as well.
For that price it looks incredibly well made. This one might actually be a winner.
I just played my fathers Original Gibson 1960 ES355. I agree not fast shreddy stuff, but blues and jazz yes. By the way it played and felt spectacular, not sure this would be a good comparison. Nice video and playing though.
I have two fifties Gibson es-295's and real 335's, LP's, Gretsch Country Gentleman, White Falcon and almost every high end Martin made and i still love my Donner DJP-1000.
42mm nut width in case anybody wanted to know... :)
F man, I love how bright guy you are, proud of you !
If you do change strings to a heavier gauge, make sure the bridge can handle the tension being an inexpensive guitar you don't know how sturdy it is. Great video dave
Do you have guitar owlfull sound? Bring that guitar to Malaysia and find doc greng. You might be appreciated.
Try the Grote 335. Cheaper. Top quality. I bought two. Great guitars are amazingly affordable these days.
Nice review!
Holy, that action is high. The strings are touching the bridge in the holes and again at the saddles, not a such of thing at 335. Should not be so much maxed up. I don't think this instrument could be compared with any other instrument of its class. It is one of a kind, you like it, you buy it. No like, no buy.
Thanks for an unbiased review, much appreciated.
I’m a lefty so I got a Harley Benton and it’s the bomb
Your inflation calculation is waaaaaaay out. $335 in 1958 = around $3.4K today.
Oops!! You’re so right!!
The Epiphone version is pretty nice for a little more money worth it in my opinion that no one asked for
That cost conversion is waaaaaaay exaggerated.
I think you mis-spoke at 28 thousand dollars.
Yeah, maybe $2,800 but not $28k. Unless he was talking about the value of an old 335, which maybe could sell for that much today.
Wow such a ringing endorsement 🤣
So David...it really is a "ES under 400"......😀....incidenally...i bought a Sire H7 about 2 years ago....which is ok.....but i found out it's not really my "thing".....give me a Stratocaster or Les Paul anytime....
I feel like $335 is not $28,000 now but $2,800
Yeah, I totally misspoke!
Ok man this was the most see thru ads I've ever witnessed. You did a great job by the way.😉
I got your ad on your own vid 😭
Oh man the UA-cam infomercial system got to him!
Haha! A man’s gotta eat, right?
@@Wallimann 👍
If a guitar suffers fret sprout I'd probably not investigate much further but that would depend on other things too
Like the overall look & feel of it once I get my hands on it
I see tons of guitars at amazing prices with great bones, fret work, look and feel with surprisingly good components
If the price is super good I couldn't give a rat crap what electronics are , nor the name is on the headstock
electronics are a no brainer to gut and replace all of it if need be
So they sent him a set up, cherry picked one? Or is this the quality to expect?
They sent it straight from Amazon
Alex Lifeson
The big brand name guitars aren't all that, I've had a lot of guitars, I've spent a couple of thousand on big disappointments, and less than 100 on great instruments, I can honestly say that a lot of the cheaper guitars are just as good and often better than the big brand name instruments,
When you say "tonewood", you lose all the credibility 🤓 please check out an old video where a guy removed everything from guitar but a pick up and see how much "tonewood" really means to the tone.
i'm calling b.s. on the idea that the smoothness of the wood inside the cavity affects the tone. that's total snake oil.
If the "smoothness" of the wood means it significantly less porous or grainy, as one would imagine, that would absolutely affect the tone. High frequencies get caught up in miniscule spaces. Hell, Everything affects the tone. Looking at the guitar the sideways probably affects the tone. 😂 What our ears perceive is another matter, of course.. if you like the sound, that's all that matters. But scientifically speaking, every type of surface puts its fingerprint on the tone.
@@philliplavallee8141 it's an electric guitar.
@@cheezyridr Fair enough. The principle still applies in theory, but yeah, I'd say you're probably right.. no one without supersonic hearing is going to hear detail on that level.
@@cheezyridr Hollow & semi-hollow bodies might be affected; how much, I wouldn't know. There's a good vid on YT where a fellow just about scientifically demonstrates the wood is unimportant for solid bodies. I used to work in labs, and the fellow did his stuff right, oscilloscopes and analysis - pretty convincing.
Semi & hollows could have the pickups affected, conceivably. BTW, if I have my facts straight, Godin's offerings place a single pickup OFF the body.
@@JESL_TheOnlyOne several different youtube creators busted the tonewood myth a decade ago, for the people who don't know how an electric guitar works, and needed to visually see proof. hollow and semi hollow guitars feed back because the body vibrates, causing the string to vibrate even more. at the end of the day, it's still the amp translating a disturbance in the magnetic field generated by the pick up. if anyone can conclusively PROVE to me that John Q. Public can actually hear the difference in finished or unfinished wood on the inside of the guitar, through an unmodified, off the shelf amplifier, i'll give them $500
