One of the things you have just reminded me of Phil, is how genuine you are when you do reviews. There is no fake, car salesman attitude, just straight up honesty. I wish more people did their reviews like this. Nothing too elaborate, just one musician telling another guitarist what-is-what. Awesome video as always. Cheers
All you need for a top of the line sounding electric guitar is new (or relatively new) strings, a good tight neck to body connection (screws a la Fender or otherwise), a solid, strong wood (the species of wood is irrelevant), and a good pickup. The rest is just window dressing. So to me, it's no surprise that the guitar sounds good!
I would take a belt sander to the logo and scuff the shit out of the headstock and call it good. I like the guitar looking like it just came out of the dumpster :)
I went ahead and bought one out of curiosity, arrived today. Honestly, I've played worse or at least comparable guitars at 3x the price. It ain't perfect but it won't cost me more than about $75 or so to get it in good shape (less if I did any of that stuff myself) and it plays and sounds pretty good. I'd gig with it but also wouldn't be afraid to travel with it.
I like the angled headstock. I don't always like them, and they don't usually work on Fender-style guitars, but it's a good fit here both visually and functionally. No string trees, and no expensive staggered tuners.
Yes, I agree 1000% I have an SL-50 as well, and its an amazing guitar, at any price. The tune o matic overwrap bridge, and back route is incredibly unique, and works extremely well on a Tele. Its also wired with good cloth pushback wire, a great pot and switch. The black headstock doesnt quite match, and the "new" neck , but so what, its an amazing guitar. It is a bit heavy , but thats because its swamp ash, not regular ash. It is well balanced however, and I like the weight. As far as fret sprout, mine was perfect as well. I would say considering the attention to detail put in Slick guitars overall, its not likely an exception. Mine is a rosewood fretboard that is extremely well made, and the fretboard is polished (no finish, just polished wood), and plays amazing. Any guitar that sits in a box on a shelf may have to have the strings and frets wiped down. Not a big deal.
I have the ubiquitous Epiphone Les Paul Junior. Single cutaway - single humbucking pickup. Their bottom line starter guitar. $125. Stock lightning bolt bridge is fine. Replaced the pickup with a Duncan '59 ($75) and a installed a set of GFS sealed generic tuners ($25). Nice cherry poly finish (none of that satin relic nonsense). Total investment $225 and it's one of the best sounding and best playing guitars that I own or have ever owned, for that matter. Just a real joy to play. We live in the age of great quality inexpensive guitars... and music that no longer has guitar solos.
Years ago I bought a loaded strat body on reverb. The dude put Guitar Fetish pickups, and all the pots, caps, and guts as well. Amazing quality. The pots have stayed alive 1-10. None of my fenders have done that.
I took a chance on a SL51 Tele. Cost me $250 shipped. Spent another $80 on a pro set up inc a neck shim. IMO opinion you'd be hard pressed to find better for the money, and new - not at all. Prior to this I was a bit of a snob, buying only 'the real things'. I have a $5k Gibson custom shop 59 VOS that I'm too scared to gig with and don't play that often. I happily throw the Slick around, play it loads and absolutely love it. My only mod was to cover the tacky headstock logo with a strip of black electrical tape. Invisible from afar. I get a lot of positive comments about it; looks and feels like a guitar that costs WAY more than it does.
So glad you’ve done a video on this Phil! I’ve always been intrigued by the Slick guitars. They always seemed like such a great value, they don’t look bad, and Earl Slick is hard to argue with. Barely watched the video but I’m excited!
You should try a Harley Benton from superstore Thomann from Germany. 88 bucks for a great ovation like guitar. I have an Ovation Elite USA but the Harley Benton is beyond imagination for that price.
A perfect road guitar for a young band. They sound good enough for live stage work and if they get beat up or stolen you are not going to be financially ruined.
and great for the Punk band in general, plus they have a specific look for those guys that worn in look already so they do not need to wear in a guitar.
So, after seeing this video I bought one and have been playing it for three days now. My impressions: 1. the action arrived super high and will need a setup--100% expected. 2. This is the heaviest guitar I've ever owned or even tried out. It is significantly heavier than my Les Paul. It honestly feels like it is made from a wet 2x6 at Home Depot. The pickups, hardware and electronics are all as good as you can buy at any price. I'd say these tuners are easily 2x as nice as Grovers. This is an axe for a working, traveling musician. It is built like a tank to last and stay in tune. Compared to an Affinity Tele, the pickups are far more clean with no mud. I'd put the pickups at the level of an American Tele or better--depends on your taste. This is likely the best $200 ($240 with shipping) you can spend on a guitar right now, and I will happily collect their other models. I think they could add to their margins by using lighter wood and no one would complain--seriously it is ridiculously heavy. If I could shave 3/8" off the thickness I certainly would.
Check out the video by Zach Broyles on YT comparing a SL59 vs a Gibson Les Paul, Jr. The Slick owns it tonewise, imo. The Gibson sounds tighter and "cleaner", but I love the nasty, dirty swagger of the Slick by far. Slick guitars just ooze attitude. They can still do "pretty" when backed off volume wise. But they excel at cranked, mean, sweaty, sexy R&R and Blues. They also feel super responsive to subtleties of picking, fingering, bending, pinched harmonics etc...
Replacing body is a good option if it is just too heavy for you. I just think there is something to the weight and the super light finish on them. Even my wife remarked when I was playing it while not plugged in that "this guitar is very resonant".
My first few guitars were from GFS. I honestly have not found a P90 pickup with the same bite and depth as their Dream 90 pickups. The first one I got from them was a flawless "clearance" Thinline P90 T-style unit (XV-600 I believe was the model number) for about $109 bucks at the time. It was in clearance because they were getting rid of the model, not because it was a B-Stock. I use it to this day even though I have Gibson P90s and Yamaha's now.
Thanks Phil! I've been hesitant about these, and this is reassuring! Very cool! By the way, love your "down to earth" honest delivery in the videos you create :)
Lmao maybe they weren't making much money out of this guitar it just cut even and were using it mostly to advertise their parts for people to buy separately.
I bought two of these GFS Slick guitars: the SL52 for me (Les Paul shape, two humbuckers) and an SL 59 for my wife (two cutaways, P90 pickup.) They are fantastic guitars. Sort of like a "working man's guitar" or something- - devoid of "flashy" elements. Just rock solid components, like the solid brass bridge, swamp ash body, and killer "aged" humbucking pickups. In fact, I like those Slick Humbucker pickups so much, when I bought a 2014 Les Paul Studio, I yanked out the stock pickups and wiring (which used a circuit board- - UGH!) and put in Slick Humbuckers, and Old School wiring and potentiometers... all of which I got from guitarfetish. The "relic" aspect of the finish turns out to convey a huge advantage: because the guitar looks a little beat up already, you won't baby it! You can just play the hell out if it without worrying about scuffing it up or whatever. You can just leave it lying around the living room, to pick up and play whenever inspiration strikes, rather than putting it away in its case (where it's a hassle to get at when that inspiration shows up.) Great guitars!
Thanks Phil for the review. We miss your storefront shop on Chandler Blvd. Last time I drove by the whole center was shuttered and being redone. Very pleased that you are succeeding online. Stay Safe!
I have a Xaviere tele that I purchased from Guitar Fetish. $209 shipped to my door. Excellent build. I will probably upgrade the tuners eventually. They work fine BTW. 3 piece ash body right up there in quality as my 2 piece USA Strat. Has the quick connect electronics for easy pickup swaps. Really like it.
I don't understand why the Quick Plug system hasn't caught on like wildfire- it's literally an extension of Leo Fender design IMHO- makes it a 100% complete easily swappable component guitar= if they were to use MFD pickups with the adjustable pole pieces they would kick everyone's ass right now in that market.
GFS has some good stuff. I picked up a brass bridge and vintage tuners for a project strat and it turned out awesome. Much better than the junk fender put in.
I finally bought one of the SL60's because of this video (had to waitlist it), and it's my new favorite guitar. Very high quality for this price point, and I'm not sure any of my more expensive guitars feel better in my hands.
Well, either they have gotten their act together recently, or it's just hit or miss. You fared better than I did. I was intrigued by the look and price of the guitars especially though black ash body Telecaster, which is what I bought. The finish on the body was awesome. It felt comfortable like your favorite pair of worn-out jeans. Unfortunately, that was offset by all the other problems my guitar had. The cavity for the bridge pickup was routed off center enough that you could see it peeking out from under the bridge plate, which was off center enough so that I could see by looking at the strings in relation to the fingerboard from quite a distance. Screw holes for the neck were crooked and so was the neck plate, which is how I noticed. I might be willing to try again, that is if I can ever catch the black ash Stratocaster when it's in stock.
You can build a Tele from scratch for around $120 bucks give or take a few bucks. I should know, I did two of them already. I'm serious. Body is about $50, Neck $28 The pickups tuners, pots, bridge pickguard around $42 total.
@@PhillipMcKnight Sure Phil, I'll get back to you tomorrow, I'm on my way to an Angel concert in Manhattan NYC at he Iridium. I'll touch base with you tomorrow.
I never tried a GFS guitar but many GFS pickups. The GFS pickups have a great quality for a quite low price (even with all the added cost for me like the VAT and transport to Europe).
I've had a Slick SL57 strat for a few years now and LOVE it. I've had 3 Squier strats (Affinity and Standards) and the Slick is a better guitar IMO. It is distressed on the paint and hardware which looks really cool, but even better, it plays great with a comfortable neck, flatter radius and great pickups for all the "quack" you'd ever want. Downside, the ash body is pretty heavy and the upper frets could use some light filing which I'm working on today as a matter of fact. I'd love to try the Tele....thanks for the video Phillip!!!
My SLVC-54 (Slick Hard Tail Strat style/no longer made) is one of my go-to guitars. I love the single bridge position overwound humbucker & although I appreciate the oversized control panel for a potential tone control upgrade, all the tones I need can be achieved with only the volume control and the picking attack. Don't bother with a case & just toss it in the passenger seat while going to jam. It is always still in tune when I arrive. Satin Finished Neck, Bone Nut, Brass Bridge, Overwound Humbucker, Jumbo Frets & a finish only its Mother could love, what's not to like?
I'm glad I watched this again. I didn't notice that the bridge is adjustable. I also LOVE the fact it's brass! Everything on that guitar is right. Everything. Thank you for doing this review on it. I've never seen a guitar that good at that price point. Seeing this again gives me a giant amount of respect for the Slick guitars. ❤️❤️
I have been looking at slick guitars website for a couple months, checked out many reviews, and could never really get an idea if it was a decent quality guitar. Most guitarist and hobby guitarist usually don't have a high income, and I really like to see reviews on non Squier lower priced quality guitars. Thanks Phil
I bought a 200 guitar its an Oscar Schmitt oe20 it' is better than many more expensive guitars plays amazing sounds good stays in tune these days you can buy a real guitar for 200 bucks I've played many good cheaper priced axes some that were even less than 200 it's not like the old days when you had to spend atleast $600 to get a decent guitar I'm 54 been playing since I was 14 the Oscar oe20 came with dadario strings ,neck binding, polished frets and more
I will second that. I purchased an Oscar Schmidt oe20 with purple sunburst finish about a year ago and was absolutely shocked at the level of quality this 200$ guitar offered. The thing sustains for days, plays and sounds better than guitars I paid 10 times that price. And it looks awesome too. My only previous experience with Oscar Schmidt was an acoustic guitar I bought new in the 90s that was mediocre at best. Cheap guitars have really come along way. Its a shame that when I was coming up, guitars in this price range were all particle board garbage that weren't worthy of being smashed
Alright Phill, you just convinced me. I am on the waiting list now. I’ll just wait to place the order. This is a nice looking guitar that I must have hanging on my studio and to use it for my church gigs
I got a squire strat used from a pawnshop for 75$ I took it home, cleaned it up and it plays very well. Sometimes you can get great deals on used guitars.
It's probably real. It costs a few dollars more to make it a graphite nut. Which is a lot in the scale of mass production but I can believe it's real. At least I hope..
It is 100% real deal graphite nut when i buy generic ones they cost me 1$ for the amount of 10, Bone cost me free hey i make them alone ☺..Graphite nut is great especially for tremolo guitars and people who like to bend strings. For example i have 1st class nitro painted 2 p alder body for 50$ rutted ! 1st class one peace Canadian hard maple neck with nitro again for 50 $ ☺ - so what you think how much GFS pay and they order large amounts? We live in time of CNC and there is no need for guitars to be so expensive as they are, then people wonder ''how PRS, Suhr, Friedman etc are millioners'' of course they will be super rich when they sell CNC mass produced guitars so expensive + they brainwash musicians with ''you have to pay 2-3000$ for pro guitar''. In late 80's hand made guitar (no cnc) with 1st class wood was like 500-700$ so how then 30 years after with CNC can cost 3000$?!? 500$ in today's money is a bit over 1000$ and to underline it was hand made it takes far more time ..CRAZY ☺
great video. How about doing a shoot out comparison between this and some of the other sub $300 guitars like Harley Benton, Hard Luck Kings, Indeo, etc. Bet that would be very popular...
These are the best you can do for the price. It helps that they are not 'naff' or patently sub-standard. I've been gigging one of these for 4 months straight now. Can't beat a SSS guitar with a 12" radius with a swamp ash body for < $250
I don't have this tele style model, but I do have the Slick SL-60 and I am really loving the sound of it and how awesome it plays with the jumbo fret wire and unfinished neck back. And just like Phillip, I had to polish the frets and re-string it. Oh... and also had to cut some of the nut slots a little deeper as well. I polished the frets with steel wool instead of a fret eraser. (Note- If you polish yours with steel wool, remember to completely mask off the pickups with frog tape or something so that the steel wool particles don't get into your pickup magnets. That could really mess them up!) But overall, I feel I got a GREAT value in this guitar and it's my "beater" guitar - even though I never actually "beat" a guitar. Lol! It's more like the guitar I take to the beach, or on a trip where I wouldn't want to risk getting a Gibson scratched up. The relic finish means I don't have to handle the instrument with much care. The pickups are the highlight of this guitar though. Like P-90s but hotter. Great for Pop-punk.
I checked them out and HOLY MOLY that SL51 Black Ashe... today’s my 19th birthday and I wish I could go back in time to beg my parents endlessly to get one today lol.
The bridge on these are great., but it would be nice if the individual saddle were adjustable for height but 12 degree radius works for many guitars. When these are locked down, it's solid as a rock.
Thanks Phillip. I bought a Tele copy with humbuckers, basswood body, maple neck, decent electronics, tuners and bridge assembly, fully set-up, intoned and polished from Bargain Musicians for $179.95 shipping free. I haven't found anything that can touch it for that price, nothing. There were fret "sprouts"that needed attention and the bridge needed some re-adjustment. I cannot imagine how they can sell and ship such a great guitar for so little money. The humbuckers sound incredible BTW and really can rock the house. Amazing. No, I don't work for Bargain Musician :-)
I've been checking these out for a project type of thing.. will definitely be looking more into the GFS line.. again I thank you for these honest reviews..
That's a awesome guitar. Our house got broken into last week while camping and they stole my autistic sons guitar as well. He's 7 and has so much love for music. Knowing that a good guitar that is affordable like this is out there is amazing. Love the channel. Keep up the great work
Don't have personal experience with one, but the general consensus is that HLK guitars are hit or miss, mostly miss and the CEO is an asshole to people who have valid criticisms of his company's products. Check out the Awesome Cheap Guitars group on Facebook. There's plenty of info there about HLK guitars.
I got a Hohner osc guitar years back for $160 probably 10 years ago. The way it came out of the box is amazing. And it had a stainless steel everything. The wood grains are just amazing. It's really too bad that the USA cannot make affordable guitars. But even if they did most of the parts would be from China
I bought a 3SC strat version, and it has pretty awesome tone for a guitar that cost me less than $250. (FYI - been playing for about 40 years, and play almost everything. sounds great through my fender super champ!)
Hey Phil, I hear you about the new shiny neck,,, & have you ever seen the method where they use a torch and make the neck look like tiger striped if you had I thought you could do it to this one for an example of how to do it..Thanks, Your Great Buddy.
The 3 G bend seems like you are are really stretching the strings. Strings need to be stretched in order to keep a stable tuning. If they sit to long, like on a new guitar in a box, then they will need to be stretched again. You should probably apply your 3 G bend to E, A, D, B and e as well. Everyone should know this as it really does help with staying in tune. So, stretch those strings. Cheers😀
Got my Slick SL50 today 4/23 Cream Body Rosewood Fingerboard. Yes had to lower the bridge, action was way to high. There may be a problem changing the strings with a lowered bridge as the access holes go below the body on the bridge. My guitar's frets had no spout also. The toggle switch has a low quality plastic internal shaft, brass tip is all show. Full sized volume pot came lose within the first hour, removed control cavity cover to hold pot when tightening the volume pot. The Volume knob's core is plastic it's not solid brass. So if your going to do serious gigging with this guitar I'd replace that toggle switch before it fails at a live performance on you. The full sized pot has no brand naming that I can see. The pot feels OK for now but I don't think it's up to snuff for long term serious use; replace it if you have the now how with a HQ known brand and a solid metal knob. Chinese made guitars always seem to have lose pots, They seem to be always be finger tightened and the controls are always low grade. Only a few bucks more to use the good stuff in the first place. Yes brand name guitar company's don't want them as good as there top dollar models, that's obvious why they do it. So why are brands like Slick, Monoprice and others allowing the Chinese Manufactures to use low grade controls is beyond me the cost would be minimal to use HQ parts. The finish and fit has improved over the years on this stuff; it's about time they stop cutting corners on the controls.
You should tell that to Earl Slicks face.Maybe he'll refund you... for always being dissatisfied with everything you touch and ruin ,then bitch about it on UA-cam . Why, ruin it for the rest of us who want to buy this guitar and play it, right. Try treating the guitar with respect...Maybe you'll learn to be happy.
i just bought a guitar for 1500 from sweetwater... fender american strat... trem saddles screws where stripped....crack in neck pocket pivot neck ... was bad... putting a mexican neck in... also.. adding a sophia trem...its a 2019..its at my guitar set up guy... never seen anything like it...i just dont want to mail it back to sweetwater due to shipping... problems with fex ex...stinks Phil
Saw one of these used in a local shop. As I was going to pick it up the clerk said "That one is heavy!". It was..probably 8-9 lbs. Probably Swamp Ash with swamp still in it!
Id love to see you check out some mitchell guitars. They're guitar centers in house brand. I bought one as a beginner guitar. It was the MS450 for around $400 USD. I enjoy it but I also don't have even a 16th of the knowledge you have.
Easy upgrade there is the stewart macdonald handwired stuff. Cheaper than most, and man, you won't find anything better before you get into the actual boutique made-to-order stuff.
BRAVO! FINALLY! God or Universe or whom ever you believe bless you Phillip McKnight, people over that side of the Atlantic (in world as well ☺) need somebody like you to help RNR survive, GFS make killer stuff or if you like import pickups, tremolos, tuners are 1st class and can stand side by side with any BIG names and often beat them to dust, pedals are amazing as well far as i know they have some German parts believe it or not. SLICK is great, cheers.
A life is not well lived if u don't like or listen to Paul Westerberg/Replacements He's such a great singer/song writer I'm gonna keep commenting this until someone notices I've been listening to hi since i was a baby my dad found him when he was in his early 20s back in the 80s i'm 17 my dad is 52
I loved them when I discovered them in the 80's. Fantastic band. Tight, and well written songs. Love them still. Saw them live probably 88 or 89-dont remember for sure. Bronco bowl in Dallas. I'm late 50's. Keep commenting even though someone noticed. People need to keep hearing it.
I admire your passion, kid, but it's a bit needy and overwhelming. Blatant attention seeking is not going to garner much respect from anyone, but at least you are owning it, not hiding it. I'd ease up on the pseudo-threat to continue posting the comment though. It's a meaningless threat that pressures no one to do what you want, its more like a tantrum. Okay, I'm done lecturing. You have a dad already and don't need another any more than I need more kids. On to Paul Westerberg That having been said, I have been listening to the Replacements and Paul Westerberg solo since the early 1990s. Agree, he is one hell of a songwriter. A band I was in years ago did a cover version of Androgynous when we played live. Took some convincing as not everyone was a fan but we sped up the tempo and it went over well with the crowds we played to. Check out the soundtrack to the movie Singles, if you haven't already. It has two Paul Westerberg solo songs on it that are great, Dyslexic Heart and Waiting for Somebody. That movie was crap but its one of the best movie soundtracks ever imo. I still have my original copy of that CD that I bought with money I earned from delivering newspapers as a preteen, all scratched to hell after years of play and surviving natural disasters, 2 marriages, and a few nut job ex girlfriends throwing my things when they got mad. Good times. Good songs. I'd give anything to be 17 again. Had some really happy days at that age. Don't take youth for granted kid, before you know it your 40+, hair going grey and the hotties you used to hook up with don't even look at you anymore.
I like to watch your videos very educationalVery helpful to watch some more learn some more Your videos are really awesome I'm just a beginner I'm 61 years old I've always Wanted learn how to play guitar Thank you for all your help Please keep making videosI will watch them all
The posts that raises and lowers the bridge, are the screwed directly into the wood, or into machined barrels like a Floyd rose? Thanks. I just checked out the website, lots of options for everyone. I'm seriously thinking getting one for a B bender conversion. 🤔
I had an 'Earl Slick' Tele. (Somewhat more 'higher-end' than the featured guitar) .... It also had a brass bridge (traditional Tele style bridge) The Slicks use lots of brass, tuners, knobs, etc.........It's a good instrument. . . I traded it for a National Tri-Cone Resonator, as I already have a Fender Tele.
Oh, Phil - relicing? Never understood what was wrong with a nice looking guitar. Ive got some 20 years old which look pretty mint. Ok, I may not gig for a living but why are gigging musicians embarrassed by a new guitar? Do racing drivers need to relic their new Teslas before they feel 'legit'? Doubt it!
A worn look for some seems to make them feel like it sounds better or vintage when in fact it needs a serious fret replacement and a new fhinish. I've played a few guitars that have gone through some wars but they don't sound any better than a brand new one. So people even purposely stain a guitar to give it a worn look I don't understand it but if u like the look I can dig it if u can play it
@@AhoooY1 Erm, it's the people who relic their guitars that are pretentious. It literally means 'poser'. Look up a word before attempting to use it online and embarass yourself.
I'm sold. If only Guitar Fetish had any in stock. I found a Marshall amp in my local dump and was able to get it working, so the cosmic message is, "You shall learn the electric guitar." I looked at a ton of beautiful looking guitars with fancy wood grain and finishes, but realized I would spend more time looking at them and polishing the finish than actually playing. I want to buy a tool that I'm not afraid to use and scratch up, but has quality parts. It seems like the Slick guitars focus on sound, quality parts and playing experience, and they found a way to bring the instrument in at a great price by going minimal on the finish. I think it's awesome that Guitar Fetish and Earl Slick worked so hard to make a great playing guitar available to more people at a sane price. I'm guessing they are so popular that they're not able to keep up with the demand.
I should look into those. I have those custom humbuckers coming (fatback copy) I had thought oh will pick up a guitar husk but then looking around people went too much for even stripped epiphone are often over 300 with shipping almost the price of a used guitar that's not stripped
Cheers
From a distance, it looks like it says "SUCK".
Auto Expressionist lol!
Auto Expressionist it’s doesn’t suck trust me
I would make it say that w a little whiteout. It would suit my playing ability.
It really do tho 😂😂
Stupid man what are you in the 5th grade
All you need for a top of the line sounding electric guitar is new (or relatively new) strings, a good tight neck to body connection (screws a la Fender or otherwise), a solid, strong wood (the species of wood is irrelevant), and a good pickup. The rest is just window dressing. So to me, it's no surprise that the guitar sounds good!

Someone recently did some tests that prove you right.
yup.
Great, another budget guitar that I feel I need to buy now.

I play my Slick as much as my 2016 Fender custom shop Tele and my '68 Jazzmaster. I fricken love it!
Just tell yourself it's not a 24 fret with a brick for a neck joint.
Hor Net so I guess you are not a fan
@@lewisbeeman No it's not that, I like the guitar it's just something I tell myself to cope with the GAS.
The body and neck look really nice! But I am definitely not a fan of that headstock and logo
I’m gonna buy one of these, but I’m sand the logo off so it’s a no name ripper!
Seems to be the running theme with all the super-budget high value guitars. Turrible headstock logos!
You could always cover the "SL" in slick with a "D" sticker.
I would take a belt sander to the logo and scuff the shit out of the headstock and call it good. I like the guitar looking like it just came out of the dumpster :)
I thought it looked ugly as sin, ngl

Why? Are you a guitar snob?
@@sccanj It's just a really ugly logo
That's the first thing I thought when I saw it, nothing to do with being a snob. Good eye !
Not a fan of the headstock either.

3g Bend after putting new strings on it? It goes out of tune because you're stretching the strings not because the nut is bad
We live in the age of great quality inexpensive guitars... and music that no longer has guitar solos.
Honestly if I get one of these things, the first thing I'll do is take it apart and throw on a couple coats of paint
Me too! I just grabbed a used SL-50 for $299 at GC. Incredible tone and feel. Really! Happy camper!
I got a Mike Kelly that I love
A perfect road guitar for a young band. They sound good enough for live stage work and if they get beat up or stolen you are not going to be financially ruined.
and great for the Punk band in general, plus they have a specific look for those guys that worn in look already so they do not need to wear in a guitar.
This looks like the kind of guitar you can buy and modify until it's perfect. A great beginner guitar to modify. Also a perfect backup guitar!
Very cool! By the way, love your "down to earth" honest delivery in the videos you create :)
genius business move. This video reached 500k interested people--and they discontinued the model almost immediately. Genius.
Great. Top marks.
Lmao maybe they weren't making much money out of this guitar it just cut even and were using it mostly to advertise their parts for people to buy separately.
I just ordered one.
@@rodwilliams68 How?
@@jameswcollett I just went to the guitar fetish website and pre ordered it. Link below.
www.guitarfetish.com/SL50_c_666.html
You can just leave it lying around the living room, to pick up and play whenever inspiration strikes, rather than putting it away in its case (where it's a hassle to get at when that inspiration shows up.)
Great guitars!
almost like the what original fenders were designed for, affordable working musician's guitar
Yeah, you're right,@@EpicStuffMan1000.
I agree 1000%
Thanks Phil for the review. We miss your storefront shop on Chandler Blvd. Last time I drove by the whole center was shuttered and being redone. Very pleased that you are succeeding online. Stay Safe!
Price went up for these guitars. Seems to always happen to guitars that get good reviews online.
Love cheap guitars with great quality, thanks Phill.
Nice breakdown! I own two of them. First one was perfect out of the box. Second one needed the fret ends filed. No big deal for $200!
Doesn’t Mick Mars have products or at least a stake in this operation?
GFS is pretty awesome. that previous video really helped my fret skills
You can build a Tele from scratch for around $120 bucks give or take a few bucks. I should know, I did two of them already. I'm serious. Body is about $50, Neck $28 The pickups tuners, pots, bridge pickguard around $42 total.
Sold. I would love to buy one if your up for it. Send me a email and I would love to buy one.
@@PhillipMcKnight Sure Phil, I'll get back to you tomorrow, I'm on my way to an Angel concert in Manhattan NYC at he Iridium. I'll touch base with you tomorrow.

I've been an Earle Slick fan for years. How I don't have one of these is a mystery. I'll solve it soon.
I never tried a GFS guitar but many GFS pickups. The GFS pickups have a great quality for a quite low price (even with all the added cost for me like the VAT and transport to Europe).
Will definitely pick up one of these later this year. Right after I pick up a Michael Kelly. The world is awash with great guitars for under $500....

I want to learn that riff @8:27! Does anyone know what song it is? Is "riff" the correct term? Thanks.
From what I see it's just a little play around of the A Minor pentatonic scale. Hope that helps
@@gangsterkakashi510 That does help. Thank you!
Hi there can I message you on facebook? I just want to know more about SL57. I love the SL57 Black Ash
Satin Finished Neck, Bone Nut, Brass Bridge, Overwound Humbucker, Jumbo Frets & a finish only its Mother could love, what's not to like?
so of course I want to hear it thru the harley benton cabinet you recently reviewed.
I love cheap guitars. 👍
Who doesnt bromeoli?
@Everything maybe we cant afford a PRS or gibson like everyone else
I love her too,
cheap guitars often have a very special sound !
@@linosclubcafe9098 The sounds of cheap women and 3 G bends... oops i mean cheap guitars...
Now that I have a bunch of "expensive" guitars I love finding cheap guitars that are just as satisfying...
I have been looking at slick guitars website for a couple months, checked out many reviews, and could never really get an idea if it was a decent quality guitar. Most guitarist and hobby guitarist usually don't have a high income, and I really like to see reviews on non Squier lower priced quality guitars. Thanks Phil
Thanks for the review Phillip. Amazing sounding guitar.
I'm glad you did this review. I've been wondering about them. Thanks to the viewer who sent it in!
My first Washburn had a pretty brass tune o matic bridge... and grover keys
Thats so great!! 200$! I had to sell my guitars because I lose my job long ago, but because of this I finally see a light!!!!
I really like the look of it, especially at that price
I'm sold. Sounds and looks great to me! Great demo, lots of good information.
SUPER underrated guitars . . . these Slick instruments.
I got a squire strat used from a pawnshop for 75$ I took it home, cleaned it up and it plays very well. Sometimes you can get great deals on used guitars.
All my guitars come from pawm shops
The website says the nuts are graphite...I guess I'm sold!
$200 guitar with graphite nut
Me: *nuts vigorously*
Edit: it's probably actually the colour, not material. For $200, that would be insane
@@DingoDIDeatmybaby Yeah probably the finish on the nut, not the actual material. Buy for $200 it is great!!!
Lol!!! And in other news, I just nutted a few minutes ago. Mere coincidence, or something bigger going on?
Can't beat a SSS guitar with a 12" radius with a swamp ash body for < $250
You have one of the best screen names on UA-cam. Not as good as mine, of course, but damn you did good.
There's always next year :) And a belated 'Happy Birthday' to you.
drutgat2 thank you :’D
Save up $20 a month my guy! Youll get one.
You'll appreciate it more if you buy it yourself. Get a job and buy it.
Drakrats Darkstar “get a job” kinda difficult in my current situation (a levels around), but it’s on my list.
The bridge on these are great., but it would be nice if the individual saddle were adjustable for height but 12 degree radius works for many guitars. When these are locked down, it's solid as a rock.
I got an Epi LP Standard for 75 bucks online...
ravenpascal has one awhile back and sold it after a few months. Didn’t like the sound at all.
I’ve put GFS pickups in two guitars. I’ve never been disappointed.
Agreed. The surf 90s are amazing
The active reds you can get from them are amazing!
Saw Earl Slick last month and he used 3 of his guitars during the show. I ordered a SL51 a got it in 9 days.
Keep up the great work
Phil, please review something from Hard Luck Kings, they clog up my social media all the time and am curious, thank you
Don't have personal experience with one, but the general consensus is that HLK guitars are hit or miss, mostly miss and the CEO is an asshole to people who have valid criticisms of his company's products. Check out the Awesome Cheap Guitars group on Facebook. There's plenty of info there about HLK guitars.
Hey Phil I love all your videos! I really liked how you played the theme song at the end of this one. that was very cool. Your friend Joel.
Have you heard or played a Tagima? Brindley’s has them.

I got a Hohner osc guitar years back for $160 probably 10 years ago. The way it came out of the box is amazing. And it had a stainless steel everything. The wood grains are just amazing. It's really too bad that the USA cannot make affordable guitars. But even if they did most of the parts would be from China
Not feelin the headstock/logo....sounds real thin too BUT for two bills? Idk best to save for $500 used
I bought a 3SC strat version, and it has pretty awesome tone for a guitar that cost me less than $250.
I've been wondering if these were good for the money. Thanks for the review.
whats so cool about that guitar is its a full size tele body unlike the some of the squires teles that have a thinner body
Cheers😀
I always see the Slick lineup always looks good for the price.
I use the pickups and roller bridges they have good quality parts .

You have a dad already and don't need another any more than I need more kids. On to Paul Westerberg
That having been said, I have been listening to the Replacements and Paul Westerberg solo since the early 1990s.
