    ❤I’m a designer…completely agree with you‼️For 30 years I’ve held to the thought of: if you stay away from trendy, you won’t be out of style when it’s “out” and dated. Has always held true✅

    • @Alana.Miller

      Ah yes!! So glad you agree 🥳☺️ definitely better to design with a classic look in mind otherwise you’ll end up changing it every year!

    I have never followed trends, it is too expensive to constantly change drapes, floors, rugs, furniture and particularly cabinets and tile! Good, classic shaker or flat panel stained wood or painted cabinets survive the trends and can flow with traditional, modern, eclectic or even gothic trend, neutral tiles white, cream, marble or black also can flow with changing looks, and solid neutral colored large upholstered furniture allows one to play with pillow covers or drapes or rugs, with lighting and soft and hard decor; the one area I never question is paint- overall, paint is the cheapest way of updating any room if furniture is classic in style, we have 5 quality pieces of upholstered furniture- a sofa and 4 chairs (2 fully upholstered chairs and 2 wooden mid century chairs with loose back and seat cushions) that I have reupholstered 2 times in 20 years plus having 3 slipcovers each for all 5 pieces so I can change up the look. I also have what my friends and family call my signature color- blue- blue is my base color and I will add accent colors with paint, drapes, throw pillow covers, etc in varying colors and shades of blue, red, green and creams and add metal touches of copper, antiqued bronze, brushed brass, chrome, pewter or brushed nickel- and because I buy classic pieces I am able to store items away until I get the urge to change it up.

      Can't watch this! The host is constantly using the verbal filler "sort of" and the repetitiveness is sort of annoying. A while ago people used "you know" too much and now I'm hearing "sort of" used to qualify every description.

    As a designer myself, so happy to see you in a real kitchen and not one of the "on trend" naked kitchens. Can't wait for that trend to die a permanent death.

    I don’t follow trends either. When I purchased my mid-century house I was on a tight budget; I found a mid-century room divider on sale for $24 at a local charity shop so that set the trend for the rest of my house. 2 years later I found a timber framed lounge suite with original 70s patterned linen.
    My house is so cute I’m thinking of charging admission.

    Buying "classics", whether an 1800s antique or a wonderfully made 1950s contemporary, is a good solution if you like it. Not only does it save money, it's good for the environment.

    I never follow trends. Why? They are not your own idea, often not 'you' just what some 'designer' is currently pushing. A lot of it is simply overdone and ugly. And all the white/beige/grey isn't 'warm', it's BORING. If you like bright paint colours, use bright paint colours. It just paint and be changed anytime. I once had a bright blue kitchen and loved it.

    I don't agree with don't buy new so much, it depends. That is because my house had an underlying rodent problem when I bought it that we didn't know about. After a two week vacation, we came back and they had gotten into a lot of my stuff, so we threw away tons of stuff worth a lot cumulatively. Now when I think of buying used, I think, no one knows where that stuff has been, it could be salvaged from a home that had rodents or other infestations. I never buy used furniture now, or clothing, it would have to be something that could be throughly cleaned and comes up spotless under UV light!

    Maybe I conflate the popularity of design styles with the popularity of certain trends, but it seems to me that if trends were generally good, they'd generally stand the test of time - which they don't, because they're trends LOL! I know there are some principles and aspects IN those trends that do last but end up interpreted differently as times change.
    Here in the States, from the 1950's into the 1970's, wood-panelled walls (vertical orientation) were popular - but so were cardboard framed prints of dogs playing poker and placks containing fish that could be made to sing, "Way down upon the Swanee River" over and over and over again. In some homes, weirdly glowing landscapes were painted on black velvet canvases and proudly hung over plastic-covered 1940's sofas. The panelling was good design and has been updated somewhat over the years, but the artwork was horrible! Macrame and beads were other trends that were just plain ugly... but people bought such objects and showed them off as though they served any other purpose than to be just ugly.

    • @Alana.Miller
      @Alana.Miller  Рік тому

      The challenge is knowing what is going to be a classic and what’s going to date! We had those fish in the UK too 😂 Ours played don’t worry he happy over and over! We still definitely have some questionable decorative items hanging about 🙈😂

    Do you have any inexpensive boutique recommendations? Trying to shop for my style and it's all either thousands of pounds from a designer or not a style stocked in the high street stores (I prefer ultra modern). I can see that if you are looking for traditional going to thrift or antique stores is an easy way around this but not sure where I can go to get a designer look for less

      Are you based in the UK or overseas? I can definitely recommend ways to find the more architectural pieces that make up a ultra modern look. Quite a few mid century pieces if you’re not afraid of an upcycle can look amazing as the chair shapes can be really beautiful! Searching for travertine and soapstone tables second hand is also a fab way of introducing a more modern look. Hopefully that helps a bit but feel free to reply if you have more questions 🖤☺️

    Dear Alena, I am a speech therapist and I noticed how much you torture yourself when you speak because you are using the length of ur breath wrongly. Your voice breaks down, you have uncontrolled peaks in tone and then your voice is extremely trembling in some places. I can recommend these things to you: Just go through your presentation beforehand, in your mind. Establish some minimum silent pauses, learn to breathe consistently, and don't speak when you're out of breath. Do deep breathing exercises while sitting on a cushion on the floor. If you feel scared, sit up straight and mentally count to 5 as you speak. Hope I was able to help and sry if I'm being too direct, that's the way we Germans speak things. I don't mean it badly.
