    Recently bought some recommended stocks and now they are just penny stocks. There seems to be more negative portfolios in the last 3rd half of 2023 with markets tumbling, soaring inflation, and banks going out of business. My concern is how can the rapid interest-rate hike be of favor to a value investor, or is it better avoiding stocks for a while?

      Just ''buy the dip'' man. In the long term it will payoff. High interest rates usually mean lower stock prices, however investors should be cautious of the bull run, its best you connect with a well-qualified adviser to meet your growth goals and avoid blunder

      Very true, you can be passively involved in the markts and still amass wealth-gains using an investment advisor. I first dabbled in stocks late 2019, just before the pandemic, and that same year gained over 150% with no prior investing experience, basically all I was doing was following directions of my advisor. We are working on a retirement ballpark of $3m and I’m certain my goal isn’t farfetched after subsequent investments and tremendous returns so far.

    I have a 3 fund portfolio consisting of 33% S&P, 33% Total stock, and 33% international. I feel a need to focus on complete growth so I went 100% stocks, but does the SP500 and TSM overlap too much to make sense holding both? However I’ve been in the red for a month now. Love the food at Chipotle, and the company's performance is strong but no where near to justify its current valuation. Thee Stock split has nothing to do with liquidity, You can always buy fractional of a share in most stock brokage platform like Robinhood or Fidelity, the only reason they split stock is to attract more retail investors. For institutional investor, its time to dump shares on retail investor and cash out. like Bill Arkman did. A lot company did the same in 2021 bull runs and we all know what happened afterwards

    How does that pricing box out the majority of investors? The majority that own CMG own it in an ETF or mutual fund. Additionally, fractional share purchasing has been around for years, not just DRIP fractional shares, but fractional shares at each purchase.
    Also, I wish companies wouldn't split the stock just to "appeal to investors". Appealing to investors with your share price is ridiculous. Appeal to investors via your fundamentals and ignore the people that need to see something that is "cheap". Investors need to be retrained as they think a "cheap" stock is one that has a low price as opposed to a stock that is priced at a lower value vs. its fundamentals regardless of the absolute dollar per share price.

  • @hyperhippyhippohopper
    @hyperhippyhippohopper 6 місяців тому +18

    Stock splits do increase liquidity, yes. But they don't add any intrinsic value to the stock. Chipotle stock doesn't go down BECAUSE of this lack of liquidity. If I were an institutional investor, and I was holding a gigantic stake in an overvalued stock like Chipotle, I would want to wait for the stock split so I can dump my shares much more easily onto retail investors. So if anything, expect the stock to nosedive after the split rather than rocket up more.

      @@robertswift6101 If price does go up after the split, then what you get is an overvalued stock that is now even more overvalued than it was before. If your aim is to hold a stock for a long time, then buying it at a huge premium isn't going to give you good returns. If you really just want a quick profit from the split hype, then sure you'll be a happy camper, but only if you succeed in timing the sale right, which there is no obvious strategy for. The odds won't be in your favor.

    Also, a reasonable hold but as you said probably not a buy right now. And even if it were a buy for you, you'd be raising your cost basis, but still not at risk of being in the red on your total position if it were to drop the next day.
    When was the last time you added a new stock to your portfolio? As someone interested in deploying more capital I'd like to see what would be a new stock for you instead of contemplating on whether to raise your cost basis or not.

How many mexicans restaurants do you see when walking through Europe or Asia? Or even South America? Japanese food is more popular in Brazil than Mexican, for example.

    With many brokers offering to trade fractional shares I don't see a high share price as a major hurdle for ordinary stock investors. Things are a bit different for option traders where a contract is 100 shares. I like to enhance my returns a bit by selling puts if I want a position, but think it could still go a little bit lower or to sell covered calls if I think the price is getting a little rich. If a stock gets over a couple of hundred bucks an option contract becomes a significant chunk of money.

With 60$ a share (assumed) in the future and a PE ratio of 65.29 now, it will still not be that cheap but again since a lot of people may not be looking at valuations and fundamentals, it creates an illusion to become cheap and can potentially move up higher during a bull market when there is no reason for Chipotle to go down.

    Failing to meaningfully address valuation concerns is a strange choice here. Chipotle's 3x growth in store count is already priced in based on reasonable industry forward earnings valuations - and that's assuming that all these new stores won't poach business from the existing ones. Add in the fact that they've likely used all of their pricing power (based on the fact that everyone is complaining about the $16 bowls) and I don't see where the bullish justification is coming from.
    Having to rely on superficial hacks like stock splits to spur price growth is absolutely not long-term bullish in any form.
