it was about time that somebody did a honest review of the sharkwheels, they look so clearly inappropriate for rough terrains, respect for the original design, but it was sad that they pushed the marketing promoting fake qualities. Keep it up.

I like my Shark Wheels as well as my other wheels. I think the main difference is that Shark wheels have rounder edges versus the flat edges of other wheels, and that effects any wheel's grip... pumping & sliding. Shark wheels are most effective for me in wetter conditions. Bottom line: I keep a variety of wheels with me, and swap them out as needed. Good review!

I don't surfskate at all and I have shark wheels on my board and idk from experience how they are for surfskating but I will say they are amazing for going on roads with lots of gravel and little pebbles on it. I've never slid my board so I don't know how it is for sliding. Idk how fast I go with them compared to my other wheels. But one thing I do know is rough terrain these wheels kill it. I mean take any regular smooth wheel and everytime I hit a little pebble my board comes to a complete stop and I fall off(originally had 85mm orangatang) and these are small little pebbles. Most of these are half the size of a dime. But man hitting those with my 85s my board always stopped and It was a rough experience. Having the shark wheels I never have that experience now and I'm honestly afraid of going back to normal wheels cuz of how terrible normal wheels are for those stupid pebbles. Now the paved trails I go on are not gravel off road trails. They are paved asphalt but there are little pebbles here n there and my normal wheels simply can't handle them. So I do have to give it to shark wheels for being able to handle pebbles and small rocks. Is it good for sliding or going faster? Probably not but it definently is a must if you live in a place with bad road conditions that aren't perfectly clear and smooth.

Agreed! I have made my own version modifying regular wheels. I’ll carve out one or two wave grooves around the wheel but leave the edges pretty much normal. I find this gives the benefits of the Shark wheel but retain the better straight edge. I’ve done this with Caguamas, Superfly 107’s and TB 110’s (my favorite).

I finally tried the 60mm California Rolls that I had lying around on my Yow Teahupoo. I’ve been riding them for about a month, now. I find these wheels to give much better slide control and don’t have as much foot fatigue after 30+ minutes of riding as compared to the stock wheels. I didn’t notice any deterioration in pumping performance as I am still able to ascend all the same inclines with the Shark Wheels. I use my surfskate for a lot of A -> B riding on the street and have to deal with a lot of crappy Illinois roads. Only real negative is that the smaller diameter Cali Rolls seem to get hung up easier on irregular sidewalks. Went back to try stock wheels, again, and didn’t like the fact that it was harder to slide to brake around cars and crowded areas. Will be switching back to the shark wheels...

Another great review! Thank you. I also have a set of Shark wheels, 72mm, which I got for my longboard last year, mostly for the wet and was very unimpressed! I also tried them on my surfskate and again like you, I found they did not handle well. They are not comfy and slide out when you really don't want them to. This is mostly down to the reduced contact patch, but also and most importantly due to the soft/rounded edges. Traditionally, the more square the edge of the wheel is, the better the grip it will afford you. The more rounded a wheel is at its edge, the more release it will have. So normally rain wheels would have a hard square edge and three grooves cut into them to help disperse the water and still grip on the edge.
As you said, they just seem sluggish and not much fun. I no longer ride these wheels on any of my boards...
Thanks again for great honest content, keep up the good work :)

Downhill wheel companies use the best materials and have the best research with capable riders. They optimize wheels for grip, slip, durability and most importantly the rebound of the specific formula used. I love Seismic wheels. Also used Orangatang and some downhill hawgs wheels. They are all fine. If I'm timing myself then usually Seismic thane with better rebound comes out ahead. Sharkwheels can't really keep quarter of the promises they give and a quarter would have been fine with what they promise.

When trying to find an analytical review that will sufficiently answer questions when it comes to something as new and hands on, as well as diverse, as surfskating.. I haven't found a single review online via video or text that is worth a damn.
    Until now.
I can actually extrapolate what you're saying to my practical experiences while riding. And when I was planning on buying another c7 because it's what I know, because I couldn't find a good review, I'm very likely going to get a YOW now.. possibly a slide.
when you can only afford a single surfskate, getting a review as in depth and helpful as your reviews have been, has been more than useful. These reviews are indisputable, logical, comprehensive, analytical and useful in every aspect of surfskate.
    Thank you Steve!

Love this video, very insightful. The format, questions and summary are all great. Visuals & editing are fine it works well! Overall great work, but the audio really leaves much to be desired. The voice recording is peaking and only coming out from my left earphone. I want to love this video more! Looking forward to better audio in the coming videos!
A quick cheat in such audio predicament is to either duplicate the voice track, leave the existing one and have the new one panned to the right side. Or just pan the audio of the current file, so my right ear doesn't feel so left out.

It’s hard to choose a Srfsk8 wheel, because if you like to do check slides and cess slides and stuff like that, you don’t want a square lip because they’re hard to slide and the lips can hang up and chip. But if you really want to get down with the pump action, you want a sharp square lip for maximum grip. It’s a tough call.

Good to know. They called my attention due to the look and the fact that I run on rough surfaces. I've been surfskating for around a month and love it. I have a couple of Slide boards: Gussie and Evo Bandana. but I was wondering if I should get something like that for rough terrains, smaller ones for faster pumping, harder ones for easier snaps.... My area is quite rainy anyway and even with the 78a slides it feels risky pumping hard on wet surfaces (involuntary snaps sometimes) so I guess I should go on with the ones I have and try different stuff according to the surface and wet/dry condition depending on the day when I'm more experienced.

It's a bit hard to give a say on wheels regarding Durometer and speed.
I tend to say that hard wheels have less friction so therefore faster but less grip. So overall final say is that Hard wheels have faster acceleration but lower comfort top speed.
So what Shark wheels say on their website regarding less friction hmmmm... I know what they are saying, they are saying less contact coz of the grooves, but lets face it, they are still soft wheels.
So it's only in comparison with same size and softness of wheels. + also them saying that it's better for sliding, well, not really coz it's still in comparison to same size and softness of wheels.
They just like the grooves so much and did their best to promote it and make it shine. hehehhehe.
Thx for the review, I really enjoy your reviews.
Keep Surfskating, I feel like your style still has a lot to discover ;) 👍

The only thing Sharkwheels have going for them is that they kick out small gravel and rocks pretty well.
They suck at everything else. Nothing more than a novelty item.
The urethane and the cores are garbage. The special tread design could possibly be a great thing if Sharkwheel would actually invest in developing a great wheel, but they don’t. Its always marketing, gimmicks and false claims.

I know, right? Drives me crazy too. Tried a wireless mic to be able to speak while I ride. Didn't work so well. Just bought another mic.
