    Important information on the washers and the bearings plus an easy trick for the spring.
    The washers of each set are not identical, so it might be important to put them back in the correct order. Also the bearings (the rings with balls) are not symmetrical, they have a more open and a more closed side. Following is the factory set up: the more open side of each bearing is faced towards the deck, the more closed side of each bearing is faced towards the ground. I’m guessing that keeps lubrication better in place. Each set of washers has a washer with markings on it and a washer without marking on it. The washers with markings on them are closest together. Hope that makes sense, otherwise ask for more information.
    To put back in the spring and washer/bearing set, hold the washer/bearing set on the tip of your fingers in one hand. Hold the spring in between fingers of your other hand. Angle the washer/bearing set a bit and slide the whole set at once inside the spring. Then put the whole thing on the axle.
    Also I prefer lithium grease on these bearings. Speed cream or oil is gone in no time here at the beach. Some companies actually use grease on wheel bearings as well.
    After fully tightening the main nut of the Meraki system, I loosen it just a tiny bit. Spring works better that way.

      @muk8911 2 роки тому +1

      Would you recommend using marine grease on those wheel bearings? Im currently using lubrication oil but if grease can help prolong the bearing life then I'd definitely do it

    • @rvdt4ever
      @rvdt4ever 2 роки тому +7

      @@muk8911 Wheel bearings vs Meraki bearings. As far as I understand it, grease is 80-90% oil combined with a thickening agent like for instance lithium or soap. This increases the viscosity of grease vs oil. That has benefits in certain applications. It stays in place better, keeps out dust better. In general, if bearings need to operate at higher speed (like wheel bearings) then oil is the preferred lubricant. Most manufacturers of wheel bearings use oil (something like speed cream). Some use grease. Loaded for instance, uses grease in their Jehu bearings. There is a slight trade-off I guess. Oil might give you a bit higher speed, but grease stays in place better and therefore lasts longer. In my opinion, wheel bearings are very easy and quick to lubricate. Loosen the wheel, pop out 1 bearing and put some oil on the inside of both bearings and put the bearing back in. So, I don’t mind doing that relatively often. Therefore on my wheel bearings I use oil. Speed is of little concern with respect to the Meraki system or the Smoothstar thruster. Opening them up is not something I want to do relatively often, especially in the case of a Smoothstar thruster. The bearings in both the Meraki system and the Smoothstar thruster have a fairly open design, so oil is not going to last very long and dust will get in easily. Therefore on those bearings I use grease. Lasts longer and provides more of a barrier against dust. I typically use lithium grease. Marine grease probably uses a different thickening agent (I’m just guessing here). The first time I opened up a Smoothstar thruster and looked at the needle bearings in there, they were bone dry and full of sand. Smoothstar’s official advise is to drip some oil in there without opening up the thruster. There is no way that is going to work. On a Smoothstar, just break warranty to service the needle bearings imo. In case of my YOWs, I opened up the Meraki system and put grease on the bearings before first use.
      TLTR: probably oil on wheel bearings and probably grease on Meraki system and Smoothstar thruster

I have just bought a YOW Teahupoo and the truck doesn't seem noisy when manipulating it, however while surfskating on quite regular asphalt the board is very noisy, not when turning but it sounds like a vibration emanating from the board itself. It might be normal for a surfskate but I am a little bit surprised.

    I do like your videos, however as a long time bicycle mechanic, I would stay away from 3 in 1 oil. It is no better then WD40. It's really not designed for things that roll down a street over constant dust and dirt. I would use tri flow, park grease, finish line, White lightning. Basically, bicycle industry lubricants. Both wet and dry bicycle industry lubricants and greases are designed to attract as little dirt as possible and therefore help last longer between cleaning and maintaining. Most of these companies use Teflon or silicone or some specific ingredient designed to help manage dust and dirt (Think of your non stick frying pan). I would also pack the spring and bearings with a bit more grease and wipe any excess away. It won't hurt anything and could help parts last longer and stay quieter. Thanks for what you do. I am a long time surfer from orange county CA. However I have lived in Indiana since 2004 and have missed that surfing feeling for many years that I hope I get from the YOW I just Ordered.
