Wow, this is really incredible.. I even held my breath untill you connected the pieces together.. I have no words for it. How many times do you get to tell such a story, I guess you can count those moments on one hand.. Cherish them, and we love it that you are taking us with this special moment! Great!

Just WOW, what are the odds of you finding both halves? This looks like your haunted forest, maybe that's what was calling you back to that place. At any rate, your videos are, by FAR, better than any I've seen here and more educational than most professional documentaries. Add to that the fact that you include your children most of the time and you have a winning combo! I watch one then another and before I know it I've been watching you for hours! Everyone needs to know what the war was about and how it was for those fighting it. You bring it down to the human involved level. Excellent videos!

I am SO impressed with your videos. My husband has asked that I play them on TV so the family can watch. I really like the way you point out the where the defensive positions were dug in, and which items were found so we can develop a mental picture of the men who fought there. Thanks!!!

    Very emotional story to me.
It really puts a human being, a person with family and a loved one at home, in the war.
Sometimes we are desensitized to war and we don't equate the loneliness and horror, with real people.
    This made it real again.
The person who said it should be shown to children in school, is right.
The drawing with the sun is very Newfoundlander like, in Canada.
It could have been a Canadian boy that did this.
I know the artist could be from anywhere, but like i said, this made it personal to me.
Well done, and Thanks from Canada

Your passion for history and it's relics is very inspiring. I live outside AtlantaGeorgia and we have a lot of civil war areas. Your good hunting is inspiring me to go and get a metal detector and start doing my own relic hunting, especially with outer history. Atlanta was burned by union troops and their is much to be found, I'm sure. I hope in the future i might have something to show you. Good hunting

Who needs gold rings or coins when you can find something more precious / what a story these items hold - how not tells us of the actually feelings of the maker - trying to make something beautiful in the horror of war - something of peace amongst the destruction. Priceless .

3rd Mountain Division of Wehrmacht were in Norway in 1943. And although that flower was primarily the emblem of 1 Mountain Division, transferes were common .

    • @RaoulThomas007
      @RaoulThomas007 8 років тому +7

That is very interesting. If you search google "6th SS Mountain Division NORD Waffen SS cigarette case" you'll find a picture of a case with a similar flower and many other cigarette cases too. These cases are highly personalized. It would be interesting to contact some Norwegian News stations in Oslo and run a story on the case in search of Sigzid and I bet within a month you would have her identified. I'm sure she would have shared her story with family members. What an amazing find - how could you top that!

I love how you value all the small details that many people would just see as useless rubbish.
Simple things such as an old tube of toothpaste really remind us that these were not just groups of soldiers caught up in a terrible conflict, but individual human beings.

    • @TerryMcKean
      @TerryMcKean 8 років тому

I got to thinking about the spent cartridges and the stories they tell... many times that firing-pin dent on that primer button could have been the time a man got killed and the feelings he felt at that last breath...and the man who
pulled the trigger that caused that dent and sent that bullet...what did that man feel at the time. Very intense mix. no doubt.

    Warm Hello WW2HH,
Watching this video is a moving experience, on many levels, my friend.
As the grandson of a WW1 Veteran, and nephew of a WW2 Veteran, it isn't difficult to imagine the significance of that silver case to both the man who owned it and the man who engraved the artwork upon it.
My late uncle told me of times the men in his unit would sit and create trench art with the few items to hand. An empty shell casing, and old nail, a broken hacksaw blade, and a small hammer.
History showing us what "life" was like during those moments when the guns weren't firing, and shells or bombs weren't falling on "those men who were there".
Kind and Respectful Regards, WW2HH, Uyraell, NZ.

You can find toothpaste tubes, combs, toothbrushes, game pieces but when you find a cigarette case you have really found a personal item of a soldier. Really great find and amazing that you found the second half a few years later. I enjoy watching you clean these items and restoring them. The clasp you found at the beginning of the video looks to be a more modern item from a different time frame. It’s surprising how some items are still above ground while others are buried. Are the round games pieces used for one particular game or multiple games? I love watching these videos over again.

Josefine Nagy oh damn. that would explain the planes on the case. also the writing matches. although why would anyone carve it to the case? i would get it if it was a sailor who had warm feelings for his ship, but the other findings historyhunter had dug up were luftwaffe rank insignias so that doesnt add up. strange

My thought when I saw the inscription of Oslo, 1943 and the what I believe to be Edelweiss was that this case was made and sold as a souvenir. Your guess is as good as mine about Sigrid. The fact that the case is aluminum and not silver would seem to say souvenir and not gift. In any case, a nice find.

Great video! Great find, greater work on the clean-up. One thing I would suggest (maybe it was before and apologies for the repeat). Do you mind including a scale on the picture next time so that we can tell the size of the object? Looking at the case again, I feel it is a little small for cigarettes? But given the size, I really don't understand how it was used. Maybe a few pieces of chocolate?

WW2 History Hunter I am aware of one man from Oslo, Norway. He is Engelhart Cornelius Ostby who partnered with Nathan B. Barton in 1879 and formed Ostby- Barton jewelry company. Mr. Ostby perished on the Titanic in 1912. What a cool video this is. Thank You Sir. From America.

I know this is not ww2 related, but this reminds me of a purchase of an 18th Century letter I had. Small story. Love Lyon. Bought letter sent to Lyon from Paris, from a French seller. Some while later I bought another letter sent from Lyon, but earlier than the first: from a seller in Germany. It turned out, unknown at time of purchasing, both were written by the same man. Hope you can see the connection ;)

further reading suggests it may be the property of a soldier from the 139 Mountain regiment, (from 3rd Division)which was left in Norway when the bulk of the division was sent the the eastern from in 41.....

Maybe so but this relic belonged to Sigrid Nordrum...resistance fighter for the British in Norway. How it got there, one can suppose. Amazing artifact!! Legendary!!!!

That ink bottle made think of the ones waiting for a letter from the front and the brokenness of the artifact was mirroring the brokenness and sorrow of the sweethearts back home for the ones fallen on both sides. How sad! We keep making the same mistakes, for not only death and taxes are a sure thing in this present state of affairs, but one may sadly say that war is almost a sure thing in our present fallen condition.

Cig case: not amateur, not professional :) My vote is that the soldier did it himself, or had a prisoner "commemorate" events for him. Beautiful piece of trench art - beautiful reunion of them!!

How many different metal detectors have you used over the years. Mine is pretty good but not real expensive. It’s a Panky but I’ve been Pleased and impressed with it for the price. It will pick up 10 inches in the ground. It also came with a pin pointer. It works for what am doing with it. There’s more to WW2 history than just guns and ammunition and vehicles and planes. The ink well tells a story along with the little statue you found. All your finds are fantastic. Did that toothpaste tube say funke on it? I don’t know if I would want to use that lol. I thought they only used trench art in WW1. I learned something new again. What are the chances of finding one side of a cigarette case and then later go back at a later time and find the other side of it. That’s an amazing and fantastic find.

i have used around 7 different types / machines. Every machine works ok some work better some worse. It is more about the suer then the machines i feel. The toothpaste i cant remember. Great finds and thanks Anthony.
