"The Wire" Best Opening Season 3, Omar & Brother Mouzone Standoff (S.3, Ep.11)

- My favorite "Open" from The Wire - A modern take on classic "spaghetti western" of Brother Mouzone (Michael Potts) confronting Omar, one of the most complex characters that ever appeared on a television show, as portrayed by the great, great, great Michael K Williams)! This is one of my favorite scenes from the The Wire, and thats saying something, as it had many many unforgettable scenes.
The opening of Season 3 episode 11 (entitled "Middle Ground") is the pentultimate episode of the third season. The dialog is electric, and the director's stylistic reference to the Western genre are unmistakable, ironic, and certainly not by accident. Just as Omar's wearing a classic "cowboy duster" is not an accident. Creators Simon and Burns envisioned Omar almost as a character out of a Western: A gunslinger with strong principals. A man who lives by a code.
This riveting scene (a typical Wire 'cold open') is here intact with the opening credits for the full experience (Season 3 had the Neville Brothers version of Tom Wait's 'Down in the Hole').
(Tidbit: any James Bond fan will recognize the Walther PPK as Bond's gun too)
If you haven't seen The Wire (televisions best series, ever) your life is incomplete! Watch the whole thing:

Not a wasted word in this verbal exchange.
Lol
"Omar listening"
I loved it how Omar would talk in the third person.
Amish likes it too
Me too
"With this caliber, at this range, even if I miss, I can't miss." That shit was so cold.
Hahaha it doesnt make much sense, but thats why brother mouzone responds "i admire a man with confidence," suggesting that despite omar being informal and underground, he is a formidable opponent. Just another great example of the dialogue in this show that always has more to it than you first think
Crazy how omar said it
@@tomlee2481 It does make sense; Omar is saying that a gun with that much firepower is lethal even if the shot placement isn't perfect. Omar is also bragging about what a good shot he is; his idea of "missing" is a stomach shot instead of a headshot.
@@milesmcstylez didn’t even think about this
"I don't see no sweat on yo brow neither bruh" you could tell omar respected brother mouzone
and in vice versa.
Shooters always respect other shooters....Don't matter if it's on the streets....the mob....or the military....Shooters always respect other shooters....
@@BrokeBrother003 no they fucking don't. They literally program you to dehumanize your enemy in the military.
@@cm9241What makes it ironic is the smarter military personnel know that and tend to still humanize, but they usually aren't the grunts. Usually they're the specialists, the medics, the officers (some though). And supremely specialized shooters such as snipers will still have at least some form of respect for other snipers, even if hostile. Doesn't mean they won't bestow upon them any mercy. You can still respect a man's skills even if you don't resepct him as a person for what he does, how he speaks, etc.
"Ain't no sugar water run through them veins. You kill him?"
"He's resting"
- That's the same way Omar replied to Mouzone when he asked Omar if he killed Lamar
Part of the reasons why this show is absolutely the best of the best. The details.
I was wondering just that! Thank you MR for the insight!
This scene contains some of my favorite bits of dialogue:
-"I keeps one in the chamber in case you ponderin'"
-"Even if I miss I can't miss"
-"Omar listenin'"
The lines are pared-down to the bare minimum of words, but Michael K. Williams makes them seem like poetry.
RIP
Rest in Peace, Michael K. Williams. The world just lost an immense talent and a huge heart.
There was something about both Omar and Mouzone - their dialog always seemed the most lyrical and poetic. Choice of words, the rhythm, the timing of the actors delivery. They both seemed to have the best lines and punchlines.
Gideon K like a kiss and styles back to back verse lol
Gideon K
Their dialog reminded me of two cowboys with their guns drawn on each other talkN dat shyt!! Lol!!
This Is an award winning scene
"Even if I miss, I can't miss."
This was pure art . . . . . .
"I keeps one in the chamber in case you ponderin'."
I feel like watching this joint all over again
This opening scene is a big reason why "Middle Ground" is probably the best episode of the entire series. The closing scene is an even bigger reason why it's the best. I still haven't fully recovered from the shock..
final grade is the primary candidate with this ep
Apex Predator i was afraid The Wire had "jumped the shark" when they killed off Stinger, but season 4 was every bit as good. Season 5... meh. but still ok.
Still remember first watching this, being on the edge of my seat, then the intro kicked in and i realized the episode JUST fucking started. Woo boy what a fucking ride!
The greatest show ever made
+Mike Smith top 5 atleast.....
+Don Johnson Top 1 at least fam
Tim game of thrones is better than this bullshit. And that's saying a lot. Sopranos was really the best. This show was top 7 hbo shows.
game of thrones is better?? wtf...
Majin Mexican 😂😂😂 Wrong! The wire is top one fam 😂😂
Hands down, this is the best piece of writing. The exchange between these two are so authentic and from the streets! There is no other show in television history that compares!
Love the dialogue, "I keeps one in the chamber in case you're pondering". Just brilliant, I should go watch the entire series again....
Such a great scene. The Wire is filled with gold like this. If you haven't watched it, you need to get started.
I'll be honest, at first I thought Brother Mouzone was a little cartoonish. Not anymore. He is a total badass, just like Omar.
+TheAndrewj96 he is cartoonish, and thats what makes him so dangerous.
That was his deal, he was smart, so he knew being well dressed & well spoken gives the image of a 'law abiding citizen', if he was swaggering around with a backwards cap giving it the big'un etc the cops would have been all over him. His first line of dialogue was to calmly say hello to a police officer, most of the other gangster kids would run away when they saw the cops.
As I understand it, there's some truth to his characteristics. There were black muslims that participated in the game the way he does. I don't know if his character is based on anyone in particular like other characters are but it's not completely unfounded.
yes, both had a code. When Mouzone thought he would die, he spoke the truth an prayed. He told Omar it wasn't his style to kill or come after Omar. Omar didn't kill the screaming guy at the warehouse before he killed Stringer. They both had a code and lived by it.
TheAndrewj96 I knew the real Brother Mouzone. Always calm and collected.
the greatest scene in tv history.
Man, what a couple of badasses...
Omar dressed like gunslinger. Just needed a cowboy hat. Never noticed that. Another subtle gem from the Wire...
lawfull vs lawless
"I knew you'd come back."
"I trust you didn't lose sleep over it."
"Worrying 'bout you be like wondering if the sun gon' come up."
Omar listening.
Brother Mouzone should have appeared more in the show. The gentleman badass and the fearsome stick-up artist would have made great rivals/allies.
So many great lines in this scene. Omar was that dude.
***** seen every episode... more than once. your assumption proves your stupidity. I have an opinion on the character "Omar" and I posted it. all you can do is agree or disagree.. now go read a book. learn something.
Daniel De La Vega Snitching on the people who brutally killed his lover, and who cares if he's gay? You think you're cool for being straight? I also just feel terrible for you if you watched a series as complex and layered as The Wire, at least TWICE, and those are the only takeaways you have for the character of Omar. That's just weak
Hahah just what I expected
This scene is my favorite in the entire show!!! A throwback to classic westerns, a standoff between 2 alphas!!! Amazing writing and GREAT acting!!!
only 2 nominations as well.... wtf
"Even if I miss, I can't miss" - I can watch this scene, over and over and never get sick of it!
How bad are you when you can say when someone has a gun pulled on you: You goin' rob me now? I need to remind you who I am?
That is bad-ass.
Brother mouzone was a great character I wish he was in longer. But my God he can claim to be in the wire's greatest episode.
I thought the best Wire episode was the second-to-last episode of Season 5. "Late Editions".
I think the best is "Final Grades", the end of the fourth season. In itself all season made me excellent but although the other episodes had been scheduled only by this episode and be my favorite season.
+Ratchet Achenbach same opinion
The Wire has one the most beautiful openings of all time. Yes. Yes it was very necessary to include it because it's perfect.
"I will move slow, but I ain't tossing nothing, bowtie.."
Every quote from this scene is memorable
"even if I miss, I can't miss..".....What a Fuckin scene..
Omar listenin'....Lol! Gotta love it!
It's 2019 and although there have been some superb contenders along the way, this remains the best TV show ever made. And, I suspect, that will be the case for some time yet.
Oh indeed
The Omar Whistle, "A hunting we will go" never ever gets old.
It's "Farmer in the Dell"
Same tune though
Great show. I wish there were more seasons.
Agreed
do you not think your missing the bigger point its about Baltimore as a whole city, street cops/dealers/junkies, dockers/trade/smuggling, schools/youth, press/public perception, and then politics its all inter-connected imo.
GREAT SHOW with depth and meaning.
naw, it's beautiful the way it is. no more season. I don't like it when they milk the shiet out of a series. milk it so dry everything else leave a sour taste in your mouth that you completely forgot that the show was awesome in the first place.
"This range, at this caliber?" Omar's like Nigga please.
That gun ain't got enough fire power to make my joint useless it definitely won't stop me from emptying out half my MAG
I swear, some of this dialogue reminds me of how Shakespeare is written.
Connor Duquette if shakepear got caught up in bill & teds time machine, i could totally see him binge watching The Wire and eating some doritos on a couch.
best cold opening in the wire.
Awesome. The train chugging on down the line at the beginning...
Watched this clip so many times. Just awesome
one of the best standoffs and it's even better once you discover they become business allies.
I remember i got goosebumps first time i saw this scene.. it was indeed epic
"your boy" represented both Dante and Avon
The greatest scene, In one of the greatest shows
one of the shows greatest scenes
They just... They just don't make Television like this any more
I am about to restart the entire wire series again. This about to be my fifth time watching from start to finish.
Still gives me chills.
This fucking show…………. JUST AWESOME!!!!
This whole cold open is Made of Awesome. Seriously, it's like something out of a Western movie.
even if I miss I can't miss. Lol
legendary
I just watched this episode the other day and I swear to god I forgot to breathe I was so fucking tense and stressed up my dudes . Where has this show been my whole life!?
One of the best scenes with two of the best characters in the best show to ever air on TV. Consider this though - Mouzone is an experienced killer. Best in the business. I don't think he would have confronted another experienced killer like Omar standing so far away. Its too far to ensure a hit especially against Omar and Mouzone would know that. Of course it makes for a great scene.
I don't think he wanted gunplay. Plus he respected Omar's skills.
***** Beautiful scene.
David Evans real recognize real so u gotta give niggas room when you interact. Brother Mouzone could've blown Omar's head smooth off his body if he wanted. But that wasn't his intentions. But give enough space so that Omar wouldn't feel as impulsed to react and fire back instantly. Ya feel me?
Omar's an out-of-place caricature too, if you think about it. But he and Mouzone are so well written and performed that we forgave them standing out from the show's realism. We downright loved them being in the show.
Great scene
Brother Calzone!
Brother Mouzone was carrying a Walther. It appears to be a PPKS model not a PPK. Both were .380 caliber semi-auto pistols but the PPKS had a shorter barrel and the same 7 shot capacity. I carried a PPKS in the 70's and early 80's off duty in violation of Department Policy simply because the gun was so concealable and so much easier to reload than the department regulated S/W 5 round, 2 inch revolver. I was young, married and had children and figured it was better to survive a gun fight and be in violation of department policy than comply with policy and leave a widow. Years later I was involved in an OIS but by then automatics were authorized.

Thanks for the post comment.
Omar had a Colt Gold Cup 1911, that Government model 1911 is not only way more powerful but way more accurate and reliable. Unless Mouzone had perfect shit placement, he would have been toast.
st8 up western rite there
For someone who could pump a double barrel shotgun... shooting a single action 1911 with the hammer down isn't that unfeasible.
Every second of this series is that deep. there will never be another WIRE
I feel like Gus from Breaking Bad was inspired by Brother Mouzone
Why? They seem very different to me. Mouzone is more intellectual and Gus is more of a business man.
jeb31415 they're both intellectual
john doe They both have strong intellects. However, I don't recall any scenes hinting that Gus had any intellectual interests. I could be forgetting something, so please correct me if I am. Gus's brain power was focused on preserving and increasing his power.
jeb31415 but he knew that he must stay under the radar, nobody even suspected him of foul play till Walt fucked everything up
john doe Yeah, true. Gus was a much wiser person than Walt in my opinion.
For better or worse, this scene felt more like something out of a "regular" TV show than anything else in The Wire.
It's little bits of these moments (probably the only unrealistic dramatic moment) that make the whole show so amazing.
How exactly is this unrealistic?
Don't be a jackass dude. This felt nothing like a "regular" TV show, if anything it felt more like a movie.
Amazing
Great Scene!
I've noticed a weird fascination with trains in the last few episodes of Season 3. Earlier Mouzone says "Slow trains coming," then the train in this scene, after Stringer and Avon say their goodbyes a train can be heard in the background, and then finally the song that plays during the ending montage is called Fast Train.
I haven't figured out exactly what that means but in a show as tightly made as The Wire, I'm sure it's no coincidence.
***** I guess it's like a sense of inevitability. Trains are always gonna keep coming and going, just like life on the street. One direction, stuck on a track, day in day out....
Also, as this scene is played out like an olde Western showdown, the building of the railroad was a central part of what made America so I think it may hark back to that (think Once Upon A Time In The West).
For Stringer Bell too, it's the "end of the line" ;)
Plus, in general, it adds to the background ambience and realism of the show.
But yeah, with The Wire being as multilayered as it is, who knows?
Josh wa yeah the Western vibe is big in this scene, good call
Josh wa yeah the Western vibe is big in this scene, good call
+Kolbe Howard
Baltimore is a major rail hub for CSX as well as being a southern
seaport. There are always freight trains traveling through the city at all
hours.
+Josh wa You were an English major at some point, weren't you?
Love how Omar always refers to himself in the third person. "Omar listening" ha ha
“At this range, in this caliber?Even if I miss I can’t miss.” ~Omar Little
"Even if I miss, I can't miss."
Fucking legend.
Imagine you were walking home in Baltimore one night, cut through an alley then stumble upon two notorious killers in a damn stand-off....Yea I'd take the long way home.
I love the way Brother Mouzone had his legs pressed together calm cool and collected.I wish season 5 had Avon getting out and re-hiring Brother Mouzone to go after Marlo/Chris/Snoop
oh i will move slowly. but i ain't tossing' nothin' ........ bow tie.
:) mix of affection and western cockiness in that little name at the end.
Omar and Brother Mouzone. I wished they gave us more screen time together.
I wished Omar could have reached out to Brother Mouzone for help against Marlo. Can you imagine how cool that would have been?!
I think it's fair to say, I miss this show weekly, if not daily. 'Indeeeeeed!"
"and I keeps one in the chamber 'case you ponderin" best line ever.
00:05 Train: Choo..Choo...OMAR COMIN'...Choo...Chooo!!!
Omar don't scare.
Best opening and best dialogue for sure. Only thing I would have done different as an editor is made for Omar’s replies to be a hair longer. A little too quick. Otherwise perfection.
The Wire = Best drama . . .EVER!
Best drama ever! Best opening ever!
best scene of the entire show.
Too damn cool.
Best opening in any show ever.
"he resting" exactly the same as what Omar said in season 2 about Mouzone's bodyguard
Not only art or literature but LIFE!
So fucking EPIC
This show was so fucking good dude. I have to give it a rewatch.
Omar was a fuckin G!!
Gangsta
Lmao 2:29 " Omarr Listenin'"
The Wire's version of a Western Stand off.
It's even got a "river" running up the middle.
I remember when I was young like 13 or 14 this show use to come on after midnight. I saw one episode and straight up for it was a movie. I was hooked. And then I tried staying up every night to find the show. But they didn't air it here after that. I think because people were complaining about the violence. So they had to cut I wished I watched this long ago
This scene the truth....
21st Century wild wild west
Awesome :)
lol I'm waiting for the clint eastwood music and the tumbleweeds this reminds me of the old west shootout days
