Me personally, Congress and the US government in general is clearly not focusing on what it’s supposed to. Why does the U.S government focus on a foreign company than rather focus on internal issues such as homelessness, poverty, debt and economic crises or the education and law enforcement systems? I know that ByteDance and China do work together to take in data from American users that they can use for things such as cyber warfare, but there a lot of other things that are of bigger importance that some social media company. Also, the coincidence here is that like Kreek said (well, this has been known for a long time), is that American companies steal American citizens data due to loopholes and laws that allow them to do so. It almost feels like America is spying on its citizens rather than China at times.
But, in reality, there’s not much we can do, the government won’t care if you protest this law or anything just like most other things,

I think what they should've really done is:
*-Make the program free/libre/open source
-Limit data collection*
Of course, everything else already collects *TONS* of your personal information, like google, facebook, android, IOS, Windows, macOS, Chrome, etc etc etc (to which there are many alternatives btw)
But if they don't want our data in chinese hands, then they should do what I said, make it free/libre/open source to be able to verify if it still collects data through the source code, and limit data collection and where it goes so personal info doesn't end up in China.
Wouldn't work. Tiktok uses your personal data to create ads geared toward you, which means they make money. Tiktok is a free service, and that is one of the major ways they make money. Making Tiktok open-source could also be a bad idea because they may have patented things in Tiktok that they don't just want to give away.
They could probably instead just host ads without selling people's data, because nobody said that personalization is a requirement.
Also, they could focus on donations if they host a free/libre/open source service, which is also done by free/libre social medias of today, like mastodon or peertube.

There's no question that even US apps and websites collect data on our citizens, but the government doesn't want a foreign entity to be influencing people, elections, and our economy. Fair enough, probably there's a lot more going on under the shiny surface of the TikTok app that the general public just doesn't know about, like the potential of industrial espionage, mass data collection, etc.
Ultimately I don't really believe TikTok would change at all if it were to be sold to an American company, at least where it's relevant to this conversation. PLENTY of US companies grab your data constantly. (there's the saying, if something online is free there's a good chance your data is the product.) The only difference between the two things is that TikTok isn't 🦅AMERICAN!!!!!
The precedent this sets, that it's fine for companies to sell your data as long as they're made in Freedom Land 🦅, is a little unsettling.

As someone who is a large TikToker, I find it weird that in order to get verified ( the blue checkmark ) You have to upload you're state ID, driver's license (the front and back.) and you're passport, that seems kinda weird and overkill.
