Why did you end up buying twice the budgeted number of grocery dollars? I'm not asking in an accusatory manner but more so on a summary, honest why. - I know that in 2020 in this area, when folks were at home cooking rather than eating out many were very surprised at thier grocery bills. There were a number of reasons for this other than just not eating out. - Mixed among the comments I've given you: white long grained rice, mashed potatoes, potato soup, taco seasoning mix, Martha Stewart sauces to watch for info, and Marinara sauce from canned tomatoes. I know rice was a hit. Were the grocery costs simply because you under budgeted? Ecause you're packing your own lunches? Because you're adding to a changing pantry geared more towards more from scratch cooking? Because you're buying more snacks and beverages? How many prepared and partially prepared items items in boxes, packets, bags, and pouches such as the Hamburger Helper are in the hauls? I'm asking so that I know better what to pass along and/ or what to make suggestions on. Is there something you want a recipie(s) for either as a specific or as a category?
I think it's from buying what we are comfortable and use to. I plan on doing more experimenting with my cooking during summer now that I have more outlets to explore. I think I want to make a better club sandwich. Mine tend to come out too salty. 😅
@MyChaoticBudget Most of the club sandwich ingredients ARE salty, stack them up and ypu could be talking upwards of 2 teaspoons of salt in each sandwich. Both salted butter and mayo have a lot of salt. If you're using "hanging deli" (the grocery store cooler with all hanging packages of meat and cheese) cold cuts those can have quite a bit of salt each. Cheese has a lot of salt in it too. Start looking at the labels of the ingredients your using. Forget the percents and concentrate on the milligrams (mg) and grams (g) of things. A teaspoon of salt has 2300 mg sodium and many people are advised to aim for no more than 1900 mg/ day. While you're looking at those labels, look to see what the manufacture is calling a serving size too. Then multiply/ add the mg of sodium based upon the number of so called servings you are actually ingesting. Consider buying club sandwich meats from the service deli. To find out how much more expensive it actually is, calculate the hanging deli foods in terms of cost percpound. Or, divide the service deli per pound cost by 16 (ounces) to determine the cost per ounce. Most service deli meats come in a plastic wrapper with nutritional labeling. On a slow day askmtomsee the mests' labels; snap a picture with your phone. Often service deli mestsxhave less salt and less sugar.
Good on hubby for being more more aware of the budget. Good check in 💕
