I didn't realise there were any "modern" CPUs that could run "bare" - I thought a 33MHz 486 was the last. Makes you wonder why they included even a heatsink with this, let alone one with a fan on it - to get the temp down from 70C to 13C...? why...? I'm guessing it was either an oversight or just for "looks" / "completeness". would it even "degrade" / not last as long being at 70°C rather than 13°C...?

When you test a CPU like this, especially when it's an APU, you should really include a game like Fallout 3 or Oblivion, so you'll be hitting a demographic that is actually more appropriate to the processor. I suspect Fallout 3 would still run quite well.

To be honest, my partner still uses the AM1 5350... But yeah, It has a healthy overclock of 2400MHz. The system has 16GB of RAM, and two year ago I added a Radeon 7750 making the whole computer her official @/gamingrig. To her delight, the computer runs Sims 4 at a locked 30fps (dipping down to 20 when she does crazy builds with gazillion family members), Dirt3 runs at 1080p60, Overcooked 1080p30fps and Rayman Legends at 1080p60fps.... For her needs, it's more than enough, she enjoys being able to play some good games on it, watch videos, and open up a crazy amount of tabs in Chrome. xD I think the AM1 motherboard (29$) + semperon processor (29$) should bascially be seen as a x86 variant of the raspberry pi. You can do a lot of cool computing projects with it. I have been using the Athlon as an 8TB NAS, Webserver, FTP Server etc for the last 7 years. it is passively cool, and it has more than enough performance to do its tasks. :)

I knew back then that those Sempron were bad for everything but MS Office. I had a system built with their AM1 Athalon 5350 and a GTX 950. That would play Fallout 4, Skyrim (OG), and GTA5 with a discrete GPU though in 720p if you wanted near 60fps 1080p for 30fps. I still have two of them as I speak, and I am going to turn them into a emulation PC (which has the same emulation power as a RP4), or may dabble into cloud gaming with them (to see if they can handle it. One thing to note is the platform has a lack of Duel channel RAM support in fact they run even worse when you put in two sticks of RAM even with a discrete GPU.

Well for the price point of the whole platform at the time, it was quite all right. Motherboards for AM1 where dirt cheap too, and it made sense for a long lasting office pc. Built a couple of those for friends with low requirements with decent psu's and cheapo ssd's when they were relevant, they are still going and never had to service them. I'm assuming that by know they are so full of dust that you wont be able to recognize anything by sight, but as you demonstrated, that matters not. Kinda fond of them :)

Try playing something Vulkan-based, like Doom 2016, Doom Eternal or Strange Brigade. I've seen those games running incredibly well on very old CPUs when paired with modern GPUs. Would be interesting to see how the 3850 performs in Vulkan. It might just do well.

Fun video but would have liked to see the performance on some more games that were already a year or two old by that point such as CS:GO, Skyrim, BF4, or Black Ops 2.

Jesus, is your house at less than 10 degrees?! That's too cold man! haha I'm wearing all my close at 10 degrees. I as about to say this CPU would be cool for a retro PC, but you have to go back a bit because late XP games require high clock speeds, so I'm not sure. Maybe it would be good for early XP games! Nice video anyway! Have a good weekend!

I assume the freezing during Cinebench and opening a photo is an age thing, although I built my Athlon II x4 640 in 2010 and it lasted until 2017 when I upgraded to a Ryzen 5 1600 with no problems.

I actually ran an am1 box as a Plex server for a couple of years. Iirc it was an Athlon 5350 running at 2ghz. It was fit for purpose until one day for whatever reason Plex decided it was going to transcode all if my media on the fly. Swapped it out for a dual Xeon server with registered ECC, Unraid and a bunch of other stuff I can’t remember.

@@bills6093 It's certainly possible. Going by temps stated by users online, the reported temps here are off by 40 C, give or take a few degrees. He showed it at 70 C at 0:51, so in reality it went well above the 90 C "max temp" listed by AMD. That also means the thermal protection was likely tricked too, as well as any fan curve that was set.

Sometimes that disabled core was defective and didn't work properly when unlocked, but a lot of the time it was still good to go as I don't think AMD had that many defective dual core dies to use for the Semprons.
