I buy this block of lignum vitae at my local woodshop. Is in the shop for like 4 months but never decided what to make with... So today was the day so put that small block on the lathe and turning freestyle. This wood is awesome super green but when you start turning it turns orange and the smell is very unique.

iammimic79 yeah it’s for sale my Etsy shop I on pause reach me via Facebook ad my it’s villy vinny
My brother used to do turning before he did jewellery and now he’s a doctor. Just watching this brings back memories of the particular smell of lignum vitae.
Tom Lee you smell that on time and you remember for the rest of your life thanks 🙏 for watching
Villy woodturning where, might I ask, is your accent from? It sounds almost Latino, but it baffles me

Villy woodturning awesome, I’ve also heard lignum vitae is miserable to work with because it’s so freakin hard
The piece has an optical illusion effect from the grain! Very beautiful!
OMG! The wood is hard as steel! You did an excellent work. Looks fantastic. Thank you for sharing.
Nice job.. Very pretty color.. The wood has a specific gravity of over 1.1 and will not float. Ha.. The wood resists water and is still utilized as a seal in boats where the propeller shaft goes thru the boat..
This artwork is absolutely magnificent. In its simplicity and elegance its perfection. I’ve watched a lot of wood working and by far this block of wood has a life that didn’t die when taken from the tree. The rings shine through. You gave additional glory in its final day.
I normally don’t give comments because there’s so many artists out there. But you won my heart and feeling. Thank you🐾🌻🐾
Donna Boyle Thank you very much for your comments, it's very touching very appreciated 😊
Absolutely gorgeous!!! I was just at the sawmill today and saw a piece of Lignum about that size and thought what could I make with that? You just gave me the idea.
Woooo it's very nice👍👍👍
She glows!✌
Beautiful wood, thanks for sharing.. Full View and like..
Allen Oxendine thanks you to watch
As a kid I had heard stories about my uncle, a retired cop having night sticks made from this wood.
When I went to work, I tried to tell another machinist to slow down when working this wood. After it stalled the engine lath, he listened to me.
Oh wow the grain and color in this wood is just awesome and stunningly beautiful, magnificent and spectacular. Wow thank you for sharing.
Kobie Kaasjager your welcome thanks for watching
Wow pretty wood.
That's a great bowl you found in that piece of wood! At about 5:00 when I saw the outside of it mostly shaped, I thought, "I hope he keeps it square rather than cutting it down to a circle", and I'm glad to see you were thinking the same thing -- it really is lovely.
This is the best AFMR effect
Oh wow the inside almost looks like the tigers eye gemstone 👏👏👏
Very nice
Beautiful wood. Thanks for sharing.
that turrned out very nice
Love the square rim bowls and the wood is so warm and beautiful too nice piece. Also like the no music in the background.
Quick and fast that are I like it thanks for watching my video you can also share. It help me a lot to grow my channel
My Grandfather used this wood for turning crown green bowls, he started wood turning in 1929 and finished in 1980.
I have seen only one or two other turners use this type of wood. It never disappoints! I love how the grain comes out with a 3d look. Beautiful piece of work! Keep up the GREAT work!
Thanks you very much
Beautiful piece of wood made into an even more beautiful piece of art.
Mac Cat thanks
If I understand it correctly. Lignum Vitae is used for bushings in ships where the shaft goes through the hull. That it's extremely hard. Never worked with it. I held a piece seems very dense. Great work!
C.G. Ryder II yeah is very dense this little block was heavy 8x8x3 over 15lbs
An amazing piece of wood. You did it justice - simply beautiful.
Alan Simpson thanks a lot
Beautiful piece of workmanship on a really nice piece of wood.
Beautiful bowl the grain is amazing .. stay safe 😀
That is beautiful wood. I think they used to make the type of bowling balls they use on grass with lignum vitae
super coooollll!!!!
Beautiful bowl, definite subscribe!
What stunning wood. Wow.
Beautiful and I love the shape, no bloody knuckles!
What a beautiful piece ! I was doubtful at first but excellent craftsmanship !
This is an amazing piece of wood, and you turned it beautifully!
Nice grain and colour good job
So beautiful grain and color,👍👍
beautiful wood and beautiful bowl
Very stunning. I love the shimmer it has.
Seems like a really hard wood. I love the interior of the bowl especially.
Absolutely beautiful piece of wood,.Turning as always superb and the bowl is Gorgeous it certainly enhances the wood grain..Love it 🥰
Excellent work👍👍👍 . Thanks for sharing
Que lindo parabéns que habilidade com as ferramentas 👏👏👏❤fica com Deus.
Beautiful! As a beginner at wood turning I would love to see how you attach your work piece to the chuck and drive centers. Love your videos!
Next video I’m gong to show how I venter the piece on the chuck
Great looking bowl 👍
Mountain View Turning merci 😊
Guayacan.. terrible for chainsaws or axes here in Colombia, nice video !
Absolutely beautiful.
That really beautiful.
That is outstanding. What beautiful grain.
el material y la mano del maestro hicieron una conjuncion maravillosa gracias por ello jorge de argentina
Awesome! Well done.
Absolutely beautiful work.
Nice piecen beautiful grain, thank you for sharing.
While I dislike sharp edges and small bases generally, on this piece, they work. Suspect it's the glowing chatoyance of the wood, like a giant cat's eye. Those wide edges show off that quality very well...
Awesome looks beautiful the grain is phenomenal well done Villy
I don't usually like square roped bowels. This one is the exception. It's beautiful!!
Diedre Dunham thanks
Roped bowels?
@@johnmitchell3749 Ha ha, it made me do a double take thinking of that!
Beautiful piece of work. Blessings
Beautiful wood.
Maravilhosa obra de arte,um simples pedaço de madeira VC transforma em uma raridade, parabéns
Le style libre est le meilleur style!
Love the bowl.
Nice job, love the grain in this piece...
Szia,nagyon szép modern tál!😊👍👌🌲🍻
GOOD JOB
Fine looking wood AND “hard as nails” too! Aren’t some special “ hammers” made of this wood, maybe for woodworkers? Your finished product looked “awesome”! Isn’t this wood fairly expensive to buy? What a great pleasure it must be to do work like you do!!! “Gesundheit”!!!
It’s a lovely piece of wood and you have turned a nice bowl, but have you thought about doing a multiple axis turn? Take care and stay safe.
It’s a beautiful bowl brother. Great job and video.
Nicely done Villy! Makes me want to try another square piece, but wow that grain came out smooth!
Красотищаааааа!!!!!!!!!
I love the grain.
They used to make lower cam bearing out of this type of wood on steam ships and diesels a long time ago it would last forever
Stunning.
Very nice work thanks you
Andre Dupuis merci à toi
NIce shape, great grain.
This is beauty really like square shape and the would be ammazing
Nishant Duddi thanks
Wow!
good skills Villy
Where do you get that wood from? I have not been able to find any around here in southeast Louisiana.
At my local wood store in montreal we have some but it was last years
That is a beauty, really like the square shape, and that wood is just amazing
The tree is beautiful! It's a pity the walls and top are a bit thick! And the finish is wonderful!
I think it looks great!
If you have ever turned this wood you might understand why he kept the dimensions the way he did. Either way, it’s all a matter of personal preference; personally I look at his piece and see balanced proportions for this design. A unique piece of functional art.
Pretty wood
it sinks in water since it is super heavy and dense
I know
Oh Villy, you did it now! Turned that magnificent piece of wood into a beauty of a bowl. It is real art what you have there !! Truth !! What strikes me most is how the end grains aren't seen - it looks like rings within rings. Great choice for the shape and finish. Love it my friend😃👍 Stay safe. -Mike😷
Beautiful bit of wood was it stabilised just noticed a bit of a sheen before you started I’ve been thinking about doing some stabilised pieces myself would be interested to hear your thoughts on what it’s like to work with
I think that's just how lignum vitae is; whatever it has in it that makes it heavy also makes it a bit shiny when sanded.
how much would a 12" table plate cost?
Beautiful bowl Villy!
Did you have to sharpen your gouges more often than normal because of the lignum vitae?
Seth
Brickhouse CraftWorks no i sharpen my tool before turning and at the end for the finish
Hi Villy....that is an exceptionally fine piece of stock...if, as you comment, the wood is green, you will need to dry it slowly to prevent cracking....or did you mean it's green in color? Stay safe and stay healthy....best wishes.
Did you not sand the outside? And what you went, sealer then abrasive paste? I’m trying to up my finish game and whatever you just did seemed really simple. Could you clarify how you finished the outside of this bowl? Awesome job by the way....👍❤️
Yeah I sand all the thing just not show on camera my routine for sanding is 120 grit to 400-600 grit then apply abrasive paste
You gonna have better results with a little tool for sanding then by hand 🤚
@@Villywoodworking awesome. Thanks for the quick response. Just finished the whole video and saw what you did to the inside. 👍
What a beautiful piece. I might do a square bowl. I’ll call it the “Knucklebuster”! 🤣👍
@@jarrodderr hahahah the knuckle buster
The smell is like an old lady's purse. Worth it though.
I was at the shipyard in Superior, Wisconsin. They used lignin Vitae as a bushing on the drive shafts of the ore carriers. I was told it was so heavy it would not float.
John Manthey yeah some guy tell me it also use for boat bushings because of that
@@Villywoodworking it was used for the bearings on water mill wheels also.
The prop shaft on the first US built Nuclear powered sub (1955) used Lignum Vitae bearings. They are quiet, hold up in salt water and are self lubricating. Also no electrolisis from dis-similar metals. Some hydro power plants use them on turbines also. Cheers from Akron, Ohio
Where do you buy wood slab that size??
Amazing, and beautiful colour/grain but how did you get hold of it? I understand the tree is on CITES list?
It's in Appendix II of the CITES list, per Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CITES), which says that Appendix II contains "species that are not necessarily threatened with extinction, but may become so unless trade in specimens of such species is subject to strict regulation" and as such, "International trade in specimens of Appendix II species may be authorized by the granting of an export permit or re-export certificate."

I cant imagine how much you had to sharpen your tools.. I know when I did some katalox bowls I was sharpening constantly and LV is harder than that. Gorgeous wood though.
Rich Bolduc just before I start and at the end before my last passe is okay
this is the densest wood on earth. 1.2 tons per cubic meter.
Incredibly beautiful work even if I think that the edge is very thick and destroys the look a Bit 😅🙈
You can see the age of this log from its' lines. 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳
bro what is your finishing process it came out amazing
Alex C for this one I use Yorkshire grit and hameshire sheen paste wax
@@Villywoodworking Are you going from neg rake scraper to one grit of sanding and then the grit? Editing magic?
Jade Rem i don’t use négative scrapper i just sand from 120 grit to 600 grit avec I live to use Yorkshire grit it’s a sanding paste and after I put hameshire sheen micro abrasive paste and it’s done
Wish you would show the products you use.
