Really helpful, I went from a ssd to nvme so installed the 970 evo plus on the motherboard and used the Samsung magician software to clone the c drive. I went from a 480 GB drive to 2TB. Process was simple, no messing with any partition managers etc. windows made the 970 an H: so I was confused about how to make it the C: but you answered a similar question in the comments. So I just removed the original C drive and it booted from the new 970 perfectly, thank you

Was the target drive initialized before this process? Did you get the target drive new out of the box and go straight into the process with no steps in between? Going from a 500 gig to a 2tb and under my pc(where you see all the drives) my new 2tb ssd isnt visible.
How did the new target drive get assigned "C" ? Does it happen automatically after you put in the new drive in place of the old one? Or is there a process to do this? Thanks
If the source drive that you're cloning from is C then the target drive you're cloning to will be C, too. All drive letters and partitions remain intact throughout the cloning process.
My new drive actually got assigned as partition ”G” which was the next one available but when I booted to Windows from the new drive after cloning it showed up as C:

The samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB drives are currently 74% off on amazon, $130 instead of normal $500. So I picked up 2 of them to replace my 2x 500gig 970 EVO Plus drives (which are running in Raid0). So I'll be doing this later today when I get home ;) I know they are on sale probably due to the firmware issues which is causing (reported) failures right now, but it's got a 5 year warranty so I'm not worried about it Samsung has only admitted so far to firmware issues with the 980 drives not the 970's, and they have a firmware update out already for the 980s to fix the issue.

I am on the verge of building a new PC platform, and will replace the current M.2 500 GB Samsung drive for the 2 TB M.2 990 Pro, but not only for memory’s sake, but because the new motherboard needs a Gen 4 drive, in order to keep the drive working at its best. I have the Samsung Magician already installed, but uninstalled the data migration software. Furthermore, I was not aware that Data Migration was included in the Magician. Thanks for the heads-up. My procedure to migrate is exactly the one made by you.
Just did the same thing, got a newer and faster m.2 and cloned my old m.2 in Samsung Magician. I had both of them connected into the m.2 slots. Surprisingly easy and painless to boot from the new drive. Now I’m just scared to wipe the old one because when I select ”Format” it tells me that some files are being used by ”some” program. Edit: I booted into safe mode and formatted the old partition. No warnings and everything is working 👌
I used the same orico enclosure but the magician does not detect my new samsung nvme. Tried formatting it and it can be used as a normal ssd but the magician still wont detect it. Anyone knows how to fix this?
@@ShiBaNiS Same, I had to resort to temporarily remove my 2nd nvme slot on my laptop and do the cloning process. The magician won't detect the drive when its in the enclosure. Wished the uploader responded or anyone who got it to work would tell me how to get it working, but eh, was lucky enough my laptop support 2 m.2 slot.
Reason I looked this up was because when I added a larger drive using Macrium Reflect the partitions were in the wrong spots from install and in Macrium you can drag and drop what partitions in specific spots so after it's finished you can extend the partition to utilize the whole drive. If there is a recovery partition after the main partition you can't extend. So, I was wondering of Magician automatically does this so you can extend the partition.
I believe I was able to clone a non- Samsung drive to a Samsung drive a over 5 years ago on a Dell with no issues - I was not able to clone a Samsung drive to a non-Samsung but was able to clone to the Samsung if I remember correctly - I now have a Sabrent model EC-SSD2 that can clone any NVMe to another NVMe - only rule is the to drive must be same size or larger - I have done it with four different manufacturer's drives -
I don't undertand how you got the m.2 enclusure method to work because I am following along exactly and Magician labels the drive as 'Unknown Drive', with no ability to select in as a target drive for migration. According to my Device Manager it is labeled as the name of the enclusure itself (Sabrent USB device) and not the Samsung drive itself. Also found chats from 2019 stating that Magician "The Samsung Data Migration software will not recognize a Samsung SSD in the USBC-NVME enclosure as a Target Disk." I have the latest version of magician and this seems to be the case..
I believe you have to enter the BIOS. But I'm getting the same problem. It's infuriating. No one seems to have a full video on what factors have to be taken into account to make this occur. Even this video, while it's helpful, doesn't take into account of the OS recognizing the drive and so forth. It's always a pain in the ass.
I just migrated from 1TB to a new 1TB, and the process went fine, except the new drive has 31GB less data on it.. PC boots and seems to work fine, but I'm wondering what 31GB of data has been lost in this process. I could understand a small amount difference, but 31GB is a ton of space thats just unaccounted for..
The latest version of the software is 7.3.0. I had an issue where it told me that my Samsung Magician was "up to date" but really wasn't. To fix the problem, I went to the Samsung Magician download website and downloaded the "Magician & Data Migration Software Installer for Consumer SSD" under the "Samsung SSD Integrated Software Installer" section at the top of the page. After downloading the installer, running it, and finishing that process, I re-opened Samsung Magician and was then prompted to update the software (it first updated to v7.0 and then v7.3.0). Once I was on v7.3.0, I saw the Data Migration option. Long story short, you probably just need to make sure that you're using version 7.3.0 of the Samsung Magician software. Best of luck :)
How do you make the partition bigger on the target ssd drive? (the partition on the source drive is too small, and cloning to the bigger ssd I would like to make use of it
I just got through cloning my new Samsung EVO 870 using the Samsung Magician but before swapping the old HHD to the new SSD I hooked the new cloned SSD as an external drive to see if it would work. I changed the boot sequence to boot from the usb and started Windows but I got the BSOD with the error " INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE" What could be wrong?

I don't think so. I heard that you have to do it this way so the pc doesn't have 2 bootable drives to choose from so it's necessary to fully remove the old C: then install the new one. My OS drive currently also has a recovery partition, as far as i've read, samsung magician doesn't allow copying the recovery one. Is this true/will it work without it ?
Is backup/restore more reliable in terms of data integrity than cloning with the Magician software? From a purist mentality, backup/restore seems to be the choice.
Just used clone to move data and os to a 990 pro from a 970 evo. Took 4 minutes and was entirely seamless. I’m on a fairly fresh windows install ( 2 weeks ). I cannot discern any negative attributes of cloning. This is from a purist perspective as well. If I was on a relatively old os I might consider backup and fresh install for other reasons.

I have an older PC with 2TB HDD running W10. I recently bought a new PC with a 1TB SSD (Kioxia), running W11 Pro. The new PC has two internal NVMe slots, but only one is used. My new PC also has two HDD bays, unused. I bought another new 1TB SSD (Samsung 990 PRO). I want to clone my old 2TB HDD onto my new Samsung 1TB SSD. My old PC is 12 years old and doesn't have any NVMe slots. I thought I read somewhere that the Samsung software does not work to clone an existing drive onto a new SSD using one of those external USB caddies. I am thinking to install my old 2TB HDD into my new PC (as a non-boot drive), and then cloning to my new Samsung 1TB SSD installed in the second NVMe slot. I am nervous about doing this, particularly about screwing up or losing data from my old HDD. I also have a second external HDD on my old PC that runs a full backup every week, using the Seagate software. I was also thinking maybe I could use the Seagate software to do a restore from the external HDD onto the new Samsung SSD in my new PC, but not sure if this will work. Any suggestions on what is the best way to do this?

You don’t need that caddy, You can plug in your new SSD in one of your spare m.2 slots (if you have one) clone the old SSD onto the new one and swap the new one in the old one’s slot.

My Windows OS is on an SSD and my motherboard has an NVMe slot. I work on some pretty time sensitive projects where downtime can really be an issue. I am thinking of putting an NVMe drive in there and using it as an OS backup in case I have issues. I should be able to backup the OS drive weekly or so and be pretty safe. Is anyone else doing anything like that with these drives?
Hey did your 980 pro automatically become a "C" drive when you wiped the other one? Or did you have to tell the computer to format it and call it a C drive?

So there is no problem/error about cloning win11 to a new nvme m.2 ssd right? no license error, no prompt for a format? my plan is almost the same: 1.get a new gen m.2 ssd 2. clone the old m.2 ssd with the win 11 os to the new one via usb-c 3. install it to pci4 x4 (by replacing the old one) 4. put the old one to pci x3 empty slot 5. I may put another m.2 nvme to the 3rd slot as well (which requires 11th gen intel- which I already have)

Just purchased a Lenovo ThinkStation P360 desktop with Windows 11 Pro. It came with a Samsung MZ-VL21T00 1TB GB NVMe and has a second NVMe slot empty. Used your instructions to clone it to a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB. I have a two-part question. Do I need to keep the original NVMe for any reason? If not, can I wipe it off and use it on my desktop as a second NVMe, or use only empty space on it? I had to use a different software though, because magician kept telling me it wasn't working. Everything turned out perfect, and now i'm using my new SSD in the main slot with no problems.

Did this today to a 980 Pro using the same case. When I plugged it in I got no tone that a device had been added and it did not show up on the file manager but it did light up blue. I tried the USB 3 A and C on the front of my 3910 Dell and nothing. No tone when I unplugged the device. Tried the USB 3A on the rear and nothing. When I unplugged the unit I got the disconnect tone. By the way there was no icon to safely disconnect the device for the first 3 tries. I connected again and got the tone and brought up the Magician software and it showed the target drive, (980). 2 clicks and 16 minutes later done. After it was done, the drive showed up as my F drive. No idea why this didn't show up till it had information on it.
I have one question though. I have an old Kingston SSD as my C drive, now I ordered a new Samsung 870 EVO. Can this Samsung Magician clone my old Kingston as well, or is this just working between Samsungs?
Odd bug with mine but I have a 1TB hard drive, and got a 1TB SSD brand new. Ran the Samsung Data Migration Tool and it is telling me the new drive does not have enough space to perform the clone?
Shrik partition C for a maximum unlocadet free space and deled that free one. Open up marcian and rescan for the actual state. Somewhere close to device properties you should do a scan for the actual namespace too. Without net you will get the energY safe fzstim trim mode 😊 close marcian reboot without autostart up the profran again an use the srand alone version of the migrator.
I recommend NOT using this program. Based on this video, I decided to use it instead of Minitool Partition Manager or Disk Genius. Samsung Magician did clone my 2TB drive, but it placed the WinRE partition at the start of the drive (where it can't easily be resized) and deactivated it. It took me a couple of hours to figure out how to re-create it at the end of the drive, and I'm stuck with unallocated space at the beginning. Most users probably won't even realize their WinRE partition no longer works until it's too late.
I have two partitions on my main boot drive. Drive C for OS and Drive D with some media. Is it okay if i just clone my Drive C only so the OS migration will be faster? Then after putting the new ssd, I'll just manually copy the contents of Drive D by connecting the old drive to a usb to sata cable? Is this okay or do i have to copy both?
question...if i change my motherboard to a different one, different brand, and i plug my sata ssd drive into that new board. will i be able to boot to windows still? or will the fact that that HD came from a different mobo screw things up with the NEW mobo. im trying to go from a older sata SSD on motherboard A to an m.2 on motherboard B and somehow transfer the OS that was on the old Sata SSD to the new M.2 once its all in the new mobo build. any help would be greatly appreciated

That’s good if both, your source and your target drives are Samsung drives. My DELL computer came with a Toshiba SSD.

Why wouldn’t you plug the new drive directly into the empty spot in the MOBO, clone it, change your boot drive in the BIOS, and then wipe the old one?
Good thing its work soo smooth. I upgraded from 500GB ssd to 1TB nvme in just 10 minutes. Bad thing magician works with only samsung ssd.

Can the migration be done using the slots inside the machine as apposed to using a cradle for the new ssd drive?
yes, and ideally a better method. You cannot update the firmware via the external method which is important to do before transferring any data across.
Do you need that device?, Can I simply install the new drive in one of my other m.2 ports in my motherboard?

on the motherboard to copy the M.2 ''C'' ? Why do you need an adapter plugged into the USB port ?

Couldn't you have just put the new nvme in your second slot and done the copy then changed your boot drive in the bios?
Thats what i did with an Asus board then only had to change the boot sequence in bios

Is backup/restore more reliable in terms of data integrity than cloning with the Magician software? From a purist mentality, backup/restore seems to be the choice.
Just used clone to move data and os to a 990 pro from a 970 evo. Took 4 minutes and was entirely seamless. I’m on a fairly fresh windows install ( 2 weeks ). I cannot discern any negative attributes of cloning. This is from a purist perspective as well. If I was on a relatively old os I might consider backup and fresh install for other reasons.

Hi there, I'm using Samsung SSD 850 EVO 120GB which is not on the list of supported SSD for Samsung Magician.
I want to clone the drive to a new Samsung SSD (probably 970 EVO 250GB, I've not bought it yet).
How do I clone my old SSD?
Can the old Samsung Magician do that? or probably is there any other non-Samsung software can clone it?

I have an older PC with 2TB HDD running W10. I recently bought a new PC with a 1TB SSD (Kioxia), running W11 Pro. The new PC has two internal NVMe slots, but only one is used. My new PC also has two HDD bays, unused. I bought another new 1TB SSD (Samsung 990 PRO). I want to clone my old 2TB HDD onto my new Samsung 1TB SSD. My old PC is 12 years old and doesn't have any NVMe slots. I thought I read somewhere that the Samsung software does not work to clone an existing drive onto a new SSD using one of those external USB caddies. I am thinking to install my old 2TB HDD into my new PC (as a non-boot drive), and then cloning to my new Samsung 1TB SSD installed in the second NVMe slot. I am nervous about doing this, particularly about screwing up or losing data from my old HDD. I also have a second external HDD on my old PC that runs a full backup every week, using the Seagate software. I was also thinking maybe I could use the Seagate software to do a restore from the external HDD onto the new Samsung SSD in my new PC, but not sure if this will work. Any suggestions on what is the best way to do this?
I have been trying to find videos on the following: can I simply take off the heatsink on my Samsung 990 pro to fit it in a SSK enclosure or will it simply fit with the heatsink left on… and should I even remove a nvme heatsink?… lot of questions, I appreciate any and all advice

You don’t need that caddy, You can plug in your new SSD in one of your spare m.2 slots (if you have one) clone the old SSD onto the new one and swap the new one in the old one’s slot.
is it only from samsung to samsung drives? will it work from micron 1tb to samsung 2tb?
The target drive has to be a Samsung, so a Micron 1 TB will work to copy over to a samsung 2 TB.

Can samsung magician can clone a source non-samsung drive to a destination samsung drive?
My Windows OS is on an SSD and my motherboard has an NVMe slot. I work on some pretty time sensitive projects where downtime can really be an issue. I am thinking of putting an NVMe drive in there and using it as an OS backup in case I have issues. I should be able to backup the OS drive weekly or so and be pretty safe. Is anyone else doing anything like that with these drives?

No. Enclosure + Magician won't read the SSD correctly on usb nor let you update firmware.

Hey did your 980 pro automatically become a "C" drive when you wiped the other one? Or did you have to tell the computer to format it and call it a C drive?

I can't remember. But I know Windows won't let you create any critical errors. I was able to rename my new drive to C somehow. @@makkeyn
@glorytoglorzo5591 also i cant create more than one partition. When cloning i finally get 1 disc C 2TB :) Even if i make C and D beforehand,it will get formated itself with only C.
So there is no problem/error about cloning win11 to a new nvme m.2 ssd right? no license error, no prompt for a format?
my plan is almost the same:
1.get a new gen m.2 ssd
2. clone the old m.2 ssd with the win 11 os to the new one via usb-c
3. install it to pci4 x4 (by replacing the old one)
4. put the old one to pci x3 empty slot
5. I may put another m.2 nvme to the 3rd slot as well (which requires 11th gen intel- which I already have)
mine didnt work, guess I have to try again, I really dont want to do a clean slate install of windows 11, I have way too many programs and plugins associated with pro tools, will be a big pain in the ass if it doesnt work this time.
So WHICH Orinco drive caddy are you using? All reviews say no more free cloning software. TIA
Just purchased a Lenovo ThinkStation P360 desktop with Windows 11 Pro. It came with a Samsung MZ-VL21T00 1TB GB NVMe and has a second NVMe slot empty. Used your instructions to clone it to a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB. I have a two-part question. Do I need to keep the original NVMe for any reason? If not, can I wipe it off and use it on my desktop as a second NVMe, or use only empty space on it? If I use only empty space, then do I need to change the drive letter where the original OS was stored?

So can you clone a smaller driver to a bigger driver?? I have a sad 980 1 tb and I wanted a 2 or 3 tb sad 990 pro but the guy at best but told me you can not clone a driver to another drive that volume is bigger than in size. Is that true ??

@@stilmotionpicture yes! i did it while installing the new SSD in my 2nd SSD slot, and then cloned the main SSD to the new one. I had to use a different software though, because magician kept telling me it wasn't working.
Everything turned out perfect, and now i'm using my new SSD in the main slot with no problems.

my MB has a gen 4 slot and 2 gen3 slots saves me the extra parts. you have two NVME slots I see, you did not need that external thing.

You are missing the point! By using the caddy, you can avoid removing and replacing the GPU and the ssd heat sink that second time.
What version of Samsung Magician software you using?
Did this today to a 980 Pro using the same case. When I plugged it in I got no tone that a device had been added and it did not show up on the file manager but it did light up blue. I tried the USB 3 A and C on the front of my 3910 Dell and nothing. No tone when I unplugged the device. Tried the USB 3A on the rear and nothing. When I unplugged the unit I got the disconnect tone. By the way there was no icon to safely disconnect the device for the first 3 tries. I connected again and got the tone and brought up the Magician software and it showed the target drive, (980). 2 clicks and 16 minutes later done. After it was done, the drive showed up as my F drive. No idea why this didn't show up till it had information on it.

I have one question though. I have an old Kingston SSD as my C drive, now I ordered a new Samsung 870 EVO. Can this Samsung Magician clone my old Kingston as well, or is this just working between Samsungs?
You can only clone TO a Samsung drive. Source device model doesn't matter, afaik.
Odd bug with mine but I have a 1TB hard drive, and got a 1TB SSD brand new. Ran the Samsung Data Migration Tool and it is telling me the new drive does not have enough space to perform the clone?
Shrik partition C for a maximum unlocadet free space and deled that free one. Open up marcian and rescan for the actual state. Somewhere close to device properties you should do a scan for the actual namespace too. Without net you will get the energY safe fzstim trim mode 😊 close marcian reboot without autostart up the profran again an use the srand alone version of the migrator.

2tb ssd shows capacity as 1.81tb. Why is this? Should a new 980pro be initialised before cloning?
Storage manufacturers uses 1000 B = 1 KB while Windows uses 1024 B = 1 KB
I recommend NOT using this program. Based on this video, I decided to use it instead of Minitool Partition Manager or Disk Genius. Samsung Magician did clone my 2TB drive, but it placed the WinRE partition at the start of the drive (where it can't easily be resized) and deactivated it. It took me a couple of hours to figure out how to re-create it at the end of the drive, and I'm stuck with unallocated space at the beginning. Most users probably won't even realize their WinRE partition no longer works until it's too late.

I have two partitions on my main boot drive. Drive C for OS and Drive D with some media. Is it okay if i just clone my Drive C only so the OS migration will be faster? Then after putting the new ssd, I'll just manually copy the contents of Drive D by connecting the old drive to a usb to sata cable? Is this okay or do i have to copy both?
Cloning and copying are 2 different things.
after you did the data migration - and swapped the SSD's - did you have to do anything with the bios or did it just boot up normally?

question...if i change my motherboard to a different one, different brand, and i plug my sata ssd drive into that new board. will i be able to boot to windows still? or will the fact that that HD came from a different mobo screw things up with the NEW mobo. im trying to go from a older sata SSD on motherboard A to an m.2 on motherboard B and somehow transfer the OS that was on the old Sata SSD to the new M.2 once its all in the new mobo build. any help would be greatly appreciated
