VTX 1800 Shifter Sticking - Repair and Maintenance Tips
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 вер 2017
- My heal/toe shifter was occasionally sticking when I shifted, which made it impossible to shift to the next gear without lightly taping it to get it to realease to the neutral resting position before hitting it again to shift up to the next gear. Just getting this bike a year ago, it is apparent that the previous owner did not stay up on maintence, as these parts need to be greased regularly to prevent this situation from occuring. Once the shifter parts were greased, my motorcycle shifted like a new bike.

Thanks for this video! My gear lever started sticking last night on the way home from work. Came home, watched this video then cleaned it up today and applied fresh grease. Good as new! 👍
Bought an old VTX 1800 in May. Shifter was completely locked and I was about to investigate getting it into a shop for repairs when I came across this video. It took a little time and elbow grease--but now the bike shifts perfectly. THANK YOU for all you do. Next time I'll do this at the first sign of shifting issues.
Thanks so much. I went out yesterday and all of a sudden, I couldn't downshift very well. I did this today and the bike has never shifted smoother. Great video.
I realize this is an old video, but you did a good job showing all the details. So, if you are reading this comment from this old video, make more VTX 1800 videos!!! Please. Do a smog delete, fix your controls, change out handlebars, or something.
Thanks for the video. I replaced my cutoff shift lever and put the heel to back following your tips and you guided me perfectly! Thanks again
TY very much mine just started this yesterday, will be taking mine apart tomorrow and getting it cleaned up. Mine is doing the exact same thing.
Nice! I was about to blame the crocks you were wearing on the bad shifting, but after your video I can now shift smoothly, even if in crocks!
awesome, thanks, mine was acting up all of a sudden, exactly as described. I will do this exact maintenance tomorrow!
Safe riding!!!
Thank you so much for this video!
Well thanks for the video saved me a trip to the shop
I just ran into this problem today coming home from the docs. Im loaded up on steroids and antibiotics and am ready to go to town. Thanks for the video!
I’m having the exact same problem on my 09 Shadow. This helped a lot. Thanks!
you're welcome
having this issue on my rebel, thanks for the vid!
Great video dude, mine got stuck on highway, halfway through long trip...sucked! You helped me out when got home. Btw, what other maintenance suprises to expect?
Nice video - thanks for posting.
I need to do the same thing, researching correct grease as you can not use just any grease. Some grease degrades rubber and will trash the rubber boot dust covers. The service manual says "Shell Alvainia EP2 or equivalant" I see you used brake caliper grease? Is that working OK for you?- please update us.
I just bought a 05 VTX 1800 a week and a half ago, drove it all last week and two days this week, drove my hour commute home and when I got off the freeway I went to downshift and it went down to first, when I went to upshift it wouldn’t go past second, so hopefully this fix will fix my bike, if it’s not the linkage what would you recommend for me to check next
Where can you find a toe heal shifter for an 1800 I’m not finding one anywhere
Helpful video, thank you. Is there any involvement with the transmission/shifters from the battery or power grid? My VTX gears started sticking yesterday during a ride, and refusing to go to neutral. Soon after it died, and is not showing any power. Behaving as if it were totally dead.
There should not be. Only thing I can think of is the bike will not start if kickstand is down while in gear or clutch is not depressed if in gear. The kick stand sensor is down near the linkage but sounds more like youbhave a short somewhere that may have drained the battery
Hey i got a 2001 honda shadow, my shifter came loose and disconnected near the pedal , i put it back together, but now i have problems when i down shift. I now have to slam down (hard kick) on the shifter pedal , can can i resolve this problem.
This seems like something is binding and will enevitably break. I would take a close look at connections and make sure everything is tighten to spec and not over tight. Make sure to put some lubrication on all moving points of contact
Sounds like the linkage is out of adjustment my need to tighten or loosen the shift linkage
This is happening to me also. Mine doesn't want 3rd gear to engage.
This has fixed mine. I am just making this scheduled yearly maintenance now.
I have the first year vtx 1800 (2002) I can't seem to get a heel toe shifter that fits. Do you where I can purchase one. Ty for any help
Check Jp cycles
Did you ever find one? I have a 02 1800c and I want a heel toe shifter
