My favorite Malayalam movie of all time is Sandesham (1992). It's the finest satire (political or otherwise) in Indian cinema imo and it keeps aging like fine wine. It's a rare well made film that makes nuanced critique of Kerala's communism from a left wing POV. You don't see that even in Western cinema. It also has the best screenplay I've ever seen in an Indian film. Good writing is the biggest USP of Malayalam films and Sandesham is the best example of this. Sandesham is also arguably the most iconic film among Malayalis. It's achieved cult status and all Malayalis know the dialogs in it by heart.
You missed quite a lot of classics from Prem Nazir era here but everything can't be encapsulated in one video. But I'll add in a few that really adds in the icing to Malyalam Cinema. Sandesham, Kireedam, Kumbalangi Nights, Spadikam (You can Definitely relate to Bina Prakash Ma'am), Thoovanathumbikal (Johnson Sir Musical Masterpiece), Kaalapani, Amen, Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (Mammotty Masterpiece), Moonnam Pakkam, Godfather. There are other movies that match it in terms of being great movies, like Devasuram, Vanaprastham etc but Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha to me is unmatched when you use the word best and ahead of its time. Malayalam cinema is beyond just cinema. The sheer scale of the production, scripts by the greatest writers in Malayalam, the historical epic behind it, the flipping of perspectives, the tragic nature of the story, everything.
Hi watch these mammotty films-Vidheyan , Mathilukal(both by Adoor)Oru Vadakkan veeragaadha, Dr.Baba saaheb Ambedkar(both Bharat awd)(Eng), Vatsalyam, Thaniyavarthanam, Ponthanmaada(Bharath awd) Kaathal, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, Kannur Squad. It's unfortunate that Telugu films get so much attention in North India while Malayalam gets ignored. Mollywood makes the best movies in India by far and it's not even close imo. This is not a recent phenomenon either. Mollywood has been the best film industry in India since the late 70s ever since Bengali cinema started declining. Also if we are judging purely based on acting then imho Mohanlal is the most talented actor of all time in Indian cinema. Just a ridiculously talented actor who can cover everything from drama to comedy at the highest level without any effort.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It's true that the Telugu industry gets much more attention than the Malayalam film industry but that might be because they make and market their films in a very flashy way. Also, I completely agree that Mohanlal's versatility and talent are incredible when it comes to acting.
