    Recoil is slightly less than a equally loaded .44 Mag. John Linebaugh writing says 3 tons hits the frame with .45 Colt and slightly over 3 tons for .44 Mag. The beauty of the Colt is it shoots softer and delivers more energy and KO power. A larger bore is the reason.

    • @jorgesolis9468

      More energy I mean I could care less for the ko factor but I think on the energy spectrum 44 still beats it

      @@jorgesolis9468the hottest modern .45 Colt loads have more kinetic energy than .44 magnum, but not by much. That said you can only load those ones in guns rated for them- and your cowboy action guns are generally NOT rated for that.

    I had Gary Reeder's outfit work over my .45 Blackhawk stainless. My daughter carried it for hiking in Alaska for awhile but started using a Mossberg 590. I load my .41 mag about 1600fps with 215g swc. About the same energy as here.

      @ericoverdorff8880 I checked my old reloading manual. My max load of 18.0 grains of AA no.9 was 1582 fps. That was using a Laser cast 215g swc. Note: this is not a recommendation. I'm simply looking at my old notes from about 2001. Thanks.

    The heavy loaded 44 magnum will out penetrate the 45 Colt. Max Prasac wrote a Gun Digest Book of Hunting Revolvers. Two tests were done between the 45 Colt and 44 magnum. In both tests the best 44 magnum loads out penetrated the 45 Colt loads. I highly recommend Max Prasac’s books.

    • @johncoleman2495
      @johncoleman2495 3 дні тому

      That's not an accurate statement. 2 bullets of equal shape and construction, one .452 and one .429 travelling at the same velocity the, .429 will penetrate further given the resistance of the target medium being the same. Where the .452 bullet has an advantage is that in revolvers in .45 Colt and .44 magnum with equal length cylinders the .452 bullet can weigh considerably more without exceeding the length of the cylinder. And because of the larger surface area at the base of the bullet (for propellant gasses to push against) it can be driven to a higher velocity with less pressure. And being of considerably larger volume, the .45 Colt bullet can also be seated deeper in the case and again make use of a longer bullet giving it a weight advantage and result in deeper penetration. Another advantage is reduced case head thrust due to the larger square area of the .45 Colt case head. So, while the .44 magnum is a great cartridge in its own right, the .45 Colt is capable of more power in any revolver with adequate strength in its cylinder.

I carry it when hunting with my Marlin 1895 45-70. Overkill for my current hunting but it makes me feel good. John Linebaugh opened the door to the true potential of the .45 Colt. I now have the gun in a "Super" ( 76' Bicentennial Dragoon grip frame, Super hammer, Belt MTN base pin, steel ejector housing, and shimmed cylinder stop) configuration with opened up cylinder throats for .452" boolits. Also have a sp101 french police issue with the trausch grips that are the best grips for a small revolver like that. Only complaint about Ruger is the radius of the trigger. Recoil and muzzle blast don't appeal to me as much as rapid accurate fire on target as the hunting situation dictates. Charging mountain lion, Feral hogs and two big bears later ! I will take fast accurate shots over massive power produced on both ends! I will leave that to Scott on Kentucky Ballistics 😂😂❤! Blessings to you and best of luck with the beatings 😂❤!

    Your opening clip looks like my dad the first time he shot my Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk with a .44 Magnum load. The indoor range we were at did not allow magnums so we had to shoot .44 Special through it (believe it or not, Houston actually had some ordinance banning shooting magnum ammo at the time, but you could shoot full powered rifle rounds. Fortunately that idiocy has since gone away.). I stepped out and ask the guy behind the counter if we could shoot one .44 Mag cartridge just so my dad could feel the difference. I loaded the gun up with 5 Specials and 1 Magnum. The specials were like shooting a .22 but when that Magnum lit up his arm did exactly what yours did sweeping upper left. He turned to me in shock
    I actually used to have rubber grips on my super blackhawk because the thin wood grips were so slick and thin...but have since took them off and in time have gotten the thin wood grips to work for me without feeling so hard.

    back in the 1960s or 70s (don't recall when) Ruger got sued by a fool lawyer who was out hunting and "dry" firing his weapon in the back seat. It went off, his companion was shot and he blamed the gun. Ruger lost that suit due to a zealot judge. after that, all Rugers were emblazoned with a long and ugly product warning that lawyers assured Ruger would ward of similar law suits (it didn't). Anyway, a term used then and forgotten now: I used to have my Father in Law's Blackhawk(now here it the term); "Pre paragraph". it had the original hammer with the hammer mounted firing pin. That sucker could shoot brutal loads.

    One of the easiest and safest ways to ensure these large frame Ruger only loads never wind up in a gun for which they are not suited is to take advantage of the cylinder length of the large frame Blackhawk. Its cylinder is longer than that on a Colt Peacemaker (and its clones), the New Vaquero, and other such unsuitable guns. When I began playing with these heavy loads, I simply ordered a bullet mold from Veral Smith of Lead Bullet Technologies for a 300 grain LFN design. Veral will place the crimp groove wherever you like. I had him locate it so that a loaded round is too long for a Colt length cylinder, effectively precluding its use in those guns. With a pretty good bucket full of Colts of various generations, I really didn't want to damage one. This approach makes that well neigh impossible, the cylinder won't rotate with these loads in place. I sleep better at night knowing that. Oh, and yes - get a Bisley grip frame. Midway sells one. Takes some filing and fitting, but well worth the effort.

    That load is really something. With my Ruger SBH, I've loaded 300 gr Hornady XTPs over a charge of 19.0 gr of H110, giving me 1230 fps. But that was with a 7.5" barrel. It's the book max, and I wouldn't use it in my S&W 629, 5" barrel.
    I'm concerned about those high and low rounds though. If you hand-weigh the charges, I'd back down a little as it might be excessive pressure causing erratic velocities, even if it is a published load. Otherwise, you might want to check if there's something going on with whatever setup you use to throw the powder. Anyway, great video. Good shootin, and have fun!

Take this with a grain of salt since this is computer modeling based on “standards” for 45 Colt brass and chamber tolerances in the software. 1858 remington made by ubirty will work just fine i mix black with modern and tested it with a full mag load. plus if u buy a black powder gun from colt it has to pass the 3x test and they all are made ubirty. then colt goes through them make it shoot perfect and tested then they get the colt name i watched a video by colt on it. the remington is a very strong frame gun plus u can switch the cylinders fast on it . plus i like the idea of shooting cap and ball or 45 colt i have 4 cylinders and 2 converters for each gun of the set of 2. u would love shooting them got them from a retired colt gunsmith/marksmen and they shoot very good plus they were only 1000 bucks for everything which was a lot of stuff. a 44 mag shoots about 1250 to 1500 fps

    And Underwood makes a 325 grain Hunting ground that is very close to 44 magnum specs.
    The 45 Colt Underwood hunting ammo at 325 It's only about a 100 feet per second Is slower than 44 magnum. And the 45 Colt is heavier.
    So you don't really need to hand load to get 44 magnum power out of your 45 Colt.

      well a gas check is a small coper plate attached to the base of the projectile as pushing such a big bullet so fast tends to cause gass cutting in the lead. Some people do claim that you can get away with powder coating as a replacement for the gas check. But I have just found the gas check Makes for better accuracy when shooting a round this high powered

    not to be too nit picky but most handloaded 44 mags are more powerful than '44 mags' Same for .357 actually. I remember when they came out the .357 had factory rounds running over 1500 fps with 158 grain bullets. The poor 44 mag fares even worse... safe loads for 240-250 grain bullets in manuals run easy 1350-1400 fps.... most factory loads run around 1250... apples to apples? if the Ruger is so special strength wise.... and I have no reason to doubt that..... what you are shooting is a max or better pressure 45 colt load.. Which is fine but Ruger also makes that same gun in 44 mag... I too have shot 44 mag all my life (well 73 on anyway) and some of my loads would cut my hand on the SBH corners are sharp on that gun LOL Soo... my warmish 44 mag load runs about 1250-1300 with a cast and coated 250 SWC or wide flat nose. my mild load is around 1100 fps with the same bullet. one load turns me into an uncontrollable flincher in less than 50 rounds

    More recoil does not necessarily mean greater bullet energy. Recoil is more effected by bullet weight than anything else. Muzzle velocity contributes more to energy than does bullet weight. Barrel length matters when overloading the powder charge. Lots of powder is a waste of money when using a short barrel pistol. You should measure the velocity, before you compare this to a 44mag.

    Maybe hotter than standard pressure 44 mag since from the same 4-5 inch barrel those max out at aroun 900-1000 ft lbs but if u want a hot load its hard to compete with the 340 gr +p+ from a 5.5 inch ruger they clocked it at 1401 fps and alaskan ballistics clocked them at *1200+* (had to go look again) from a 2.5 alaskan so they are hot yes but realistically definately not more than 44 mag

      it all depends on how you measure power. that 44 mad load has a tko power of 29.
      Aria ballistic engineering has a 45 colt load of 420 Gr. Hard Cast LFN @ 1,100 FPS / 1,128 LBS / TKO - 29.

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  Місяць тому

      @jorgesolis9468 well when you take into consideration penetrative quality the 30-06 is lesser. We have a video on the subject. A 405 grain black powder 45-70 moving at 1,100 fps smokes a 150 grain 3006 doing 3100 fps all day penetrative nearly twice as far. The 30-06 delivers more energy on impact but does not maintain that energy enternaly that is why it is always good to look at fps of energy and tko

    • @jorgesolis9468
      @jorgesolis9468 Місяць тому
