Phil Jones is really good on his day. Sadly he's just as injury prone as Eric Bailly. He got the potential to even be better than Rio as he learned from him, but sadly because of injuries, it hampered his development. What could have been.
Worse than Bailly imo for injuries. Bailly has been fit for a good period of time at the club but has been overlooked by Ole and Jose at times needlessly despite his good qualities. With some good quality coaching and instructions from a manager and coaching staff, there’s a really good player in Bailly. I hope he shows this when he leaves this summer. Thinking about Jones makes me feel extremely sad and upset. I remember reading the article about him saying why he turned down a testimonial and it hits different. The guy tried so hard to fulfil all the expectations on him and he had himself but it didn’t happen for him. How low must you feel to think only your parents would turn out for your 10th at a club like United? Really sad.
i have a different believe i think he had a condition that didnt allow him to play football some health issues. thats why everyone respected him in the club and cheered him on

Thank you for making this video. I hope people can respect Phil Jones more of what he’s been through after seeing this. It’s so sad that such a promising career has been blighted with injury and how he is remembered from memes and jokes. The testimonial part is heartbreaking.
Watched his interview with Rio the other day. Very honest and heart felt convo between them both. As someone that was plagued with back and heart injuries that didn't allow me to reach my own initial potential, I feel for the guy
Even as a Liverpool fan, oof that last line about the 10 year testimonial from Jones.... That's actually really heartbreaking from a professional player. Hope he gets a good run for the last of his contract and actually the best regards for him on his professional career for what could be his final season at probably his dream club.
I think people forget that he was a HIGHLY rated prospect when he first came to United and showed a lot of promise during his early days at United. Injuries ruined him, plain and simple.
I've always seen jones as a player who gave it all to defend, that was always when mu needed him, even though he is at his best, an ok defender for a club as big as united. I hope he stays at a place were he can be valued and respected
I always thought he was underrated and superior to their other overhyped defenders over the years such as smalling, rojo, mcnair, or evans. all of them came and went but jones is still there. and I have a lot of respect for manu for sticking with a player who has been very unlucky with injuries instead of leaving him to his own fate like many other clubs would've done
I remember that, in that summer of 2011, it was between Jones and Varane on who United would get... And I remember being happy that it was Jones. Even though Varane's potential was evident, Jones was already PL caliber. Such a shame what happened, both for him and the club.
Honestly, Phil Jones is atleast as good, if not better than Harry Maguire in most of his Man Utd career. What a waste of talent, and I blame all the post-Ferguson era managers.
I always liked him, even if he didnt play the best he always gave his heart for the club on the pitch, he always did his best and tried to do what he can, he was and is a good sport I have only respect for him.
I don't really follow football too closely, but everytime I see Phil Jones, he's usually giving it his all. There was a game where he was throwing his body on the ground to block the ball with his face, and the comments were mocking him. That's actually really sad about his testimonial as well.
This reminds me of the Sammy McIlroy story. When he arrived at United from Northern Ireland in 1969 he was hailed by some as the new George Best, and although he went on to play over 300 games for United and won an FA Cup winners medal, he was clearly never going to reach the legendary status that Georgie had. He also signed at a time when many of the European Cup winning team were coming to the end of their career. He himself was Matt Busby's last signing. What was to follow were United's barren years as well as a relegation to Division Two (now the Championship). I dare say that every club has similar stories. Peter Marinello at Arsenal for example.
My home town team Portsmouth bought Marinello from Arsenal for £100K, big money in those days. He was a sad disappointment and very rarely seemed to live up to his promise. It doesn't look as if his career at other clubs was any more distinguished.
This is why confidence is such a major influence in a player's career trajectory. I really think had he stayed at Blackburn OR gone to a United squad that wasn't about to lose their best ever manager, he would've had a steadier career. Dude had so much natural talent, it's really a shame.
I was one of the fans that wanted Phil Jones to succeed at Manchester United but injuries ruined him. Then the memes came and the jokes and him turning down his testimonial because the fans made him a joke. If weren't for injuries then he would have been one of the greatest defenders of his generation.
I still remember whenever Ferdinand and Vidic were not playing I would easily rely on Jones. And sometimes even Evans. Memes aside, he is a good player I don't know why they make fun of his ability. Those old days were gold.
If Jones had done a Rudiger and worn a face mask for half his games he would probably be remembered more fondly. It’s incredible how much his silly facial expressions have defined him.
What you are doing is a bit akin to victim blaming. Wouldnt the best solution be to be a decent human and not bully another person. Am sure a lot of people exist in the wprld and am sure they dont go around hiding their face. Besides it breeds more insecurity. What happens when he shows his face after hiding it for so long? Wouldnt people bully him again? Wouldnt he himself be insecure about his appearance?
@@LeMagnifiquePetiteEspirit I think he's just highlighting the undue influence his facial expressions have had on his public persona, rather than making a serious point

I say something similar for Maguire. It's his responsibility to play good in whatever circumstance but he didn't chose to be in the circumstance.
As a Liverpool fan I knew about his injuries and his potential and it actually made me sad to see what he went through. I never trolled him and didn’t like the memes that constantly were published of him. He was a great prospect, it’s was just injuries that did him in. One thing you can say about him was he gave his all.
I remember his first two seasons when I would see him run with the ball from defence all the way to the box and it was looking so natural and almost effortless. He wasn't perfect by any means, he seemed unpolished, erratic, even all over the place sometimes but it was so exciting seeing his commitment and physicality. I always assumed that Fergie, Rio and Nemanja would help him eliminate his flaws and honestly thought at the time that his potential is boundless. But then Fergie left. Then Rio left. Nemanja too. Then the injuries came and with every one he looked less and less the player who he could have been. I would lie if I said I never wanted him out of the club, because there were times when I did. In hindsight, I know that it was not his fault. And seeing him coming back against Wolves, he seemed so assured, solid. It was like seeing another player entirely. He was the only light in the darkness of that dismal team performance. I know I'm basing this on one game only, but if he brings his fitness up to par and his injury bad luck finally deserts him, I believe he still has a lot to offer to the club. I was actually a bit relieved when he refused going to Bordeaux on loan and hope he will kick on.
Yep, he needs to leave asap. However promising Man Utd may look, all is a lie. It feels like Man Utd is a perpetual sine wave which never goes above 1 to get success. I've just given up on cheering Man Utd because it leads to nothing. They look promising and die off, promising, die off, promising, die off. It's like an endless TV show. There are sad an happy moments and it never progresses into something more. I'd be back into football in Man Utd were to get relegated. That's fine for me. I just can't this limbo of cycling from 2nd in the PL to 6th and over and over again.
Jones was one of my favourite Man United player then His fantastic performance against Bolton in 2011 on a 5-0 win away from home always been in my mind.
It really breaks our heart. Still remember his solo run on his debut season. Definitely would have been our captain if injury never hampered him. And if he's injury free, we would never spent money on Harry though
Good Video, but you missed the irony, Ferguson had time to lambast Jordan Henderson for having a gait prone to injury. Remember Jordan was bought in the same window as Jones. It’s a pity so few pickup on the legend that is Ferguson and the utter tribe he so often spouted.
Fergie made the perfect comparison by using Duncan Edwards. Almost no one can really remember him, majority of fans including myself have never seen him play, and the true potential of his talent is (unfortunately) mythical. As such, it doesn't actually put Jones under a lot of pressure while still able to hype him up at the same time.
Jones was targeted by the fans, specifically the ones online. He made mistakes and was a victim of the mismanagement of United both as a club and on the pitch. His career, just like lingard, cleverly, smalling, and welbecks was destroyed by this

Lord Joe Bovine and Lord Phil Jones in the same video? Simply Marvelous. What could have been - I'm as guilty as the next guy for indulging in the memes and slander but honestly it's a tragedy. Every time I hear the testimonial story it breaks my heart - bad luck, bad judgement, poor form played their part but a huge proportion of this is what we did to him as a collective. He was pretty much a mainstay his 1st 4 seasons at the club, had a decent partnership with Smalling that was always amongst the best defences in the league statistically. His actual career has been somewhat overshadowed by social media foolery. Definitely a great servant of the club.

Easy to say as an outsider that he should go but we have to remember players are human beings too and moving from one to another for a job you aren't sure about isn't ideal. Lot of personal things go into these moves it's not just the player moving there.
@@aakarmamtora3470 it's not a joke, its pretty obvious rangnick is open to bencing anyone. Maguire has his days counted
As a City fan who's always mocked Jones, I now feel sorry for him. He's a human being after all and what should've been a glorious career has been blighted by injuries and the coincidence of City being top dogs in Manchester and England. Good luck Phil.
Manchester City are not top dogs

I still love Jonesy's candid moments caught on camera ❤️
The face that launched a thousand ships ❤️
I really wanna see him succeed. Having a whole nation turn in a instant is probably heavy on the head. And Phil I’d show up to the Testimonial even as a City fan 🤞
Wonderfully talented footballer filled with passion and desire let down by his body and the media.
Tifo, really glad you's did the section on Duncan Edwards. Always makes me slightly emotional. What a legend
Really sad.
i have a different believe i think he had a condition that didnt allow him to play football some health issues. thats why everyone respected him in the club and cheered him on
1:21 It’s Vidic not Matic
I remember watching him playing for england vs spain in a friendly. Put a motm performance keep prime iniesta and xavi at bay. What could have been if not for injuries
Sad
I mean he pocketed prime Ronaldo so hard it was like he wasn't even there, did the same to Drogba on his debut for Blackburn. People don't understand just how good he was
Without the whole memes the whole story really seems similar to Badstuber at Bayern Munich. Highly praised by Guardiola "best player I ever trained" and remarkable defender especially at the start of the 2010's and then just getting injury after injury. Really sad because you always wonder what could have been.
There are many occasions of this, including Theo Walcott, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck, etc.
@@kohikappuSturridge isn't at the same level and Theo got insane amounts of time on the pitch. Welbeck's problem is that he was playing when Rooney was
So true, nemanja Matic really was in his 30’s in 2011, it’s amazing how he went on to have a career spanning a further decade since
Even as a Liverpool I feel for him. Hope he moves on and get his career back on track to at least championship level
I find it absolutely heartbreaking at the fact he thinks nobody would go to his testimonial.. as a season ticket holder at old Trafford I can confirm there would be over 75,000 of us there saying goodbye. Quality player and the fact he managed to not bite at the memes/trolling and kept his cool from rival fans is just a testament to what kind of man he actually is off the field. Serenading him with chants for his first game back after two years against wolves was one of my highlights of the season!
We, Manutd fans, have been very harsh on him. He deserves our respect. You deserve our respect, Phil.
What? We were never harsh on him. We were fed up of rival fans calling us meme fc and making fun of our every player like lingard, Luke shaw, Lukaku, Felliani, Fred.
@@ZexaXIII lol,man u fans are always harsh on their players, and make a meme out of them, example mcfred, lingardinho,
Thank you for making this video. I hope people can respect Phil Jones more of what he’s been through after seeing this. It’s so sad that such a promising career has been blighted with injury and how he is remembered from memes and jokes. The testimonial part is heartbreaking.
The video says 1:17 Man United were playing at centre back, "Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Matic". But do you mean Nemanja Vidić?
thought I was the only one who noticed
No. No. They don't. Why would they say Nemanja Matic if they meant Vidic? It'd be just as easy to say Vidic. Fool.

Absolutely insane Fergie had said that about him, knew he was talented back then but wow…
Ey put some respect on Evans and Smalling 😂
I remember that, in that summer of 2011, it was between Jones and Varane on who United would get... And I remember being happy that it was Jones. Even though Varane's potential was evident, Jones was already PL caliber. Such a shame what happened, both for him and the club.
Honestly, Phil Jones is atleast as good, if not better than Harry Maguire in most of his Man Utd career. What a waste of talent, and I blame all the post-Ferguson era managers.
Phil Jones
Honours
Premier League: 2012-13.
FA Cup: 2015-16.
FA Community Shield: 2011, 2013.
UEFA Europa League: 2016-17.
The man. The myth. The legend.
Phil Jonesta.
I always liked him, even if he didnt play the best he always gave his heart for the club on the pitch, he always did his best and tried to do what he can, he was and is a good sport I have only respect for him.
I would love to see a Maguire and Phil Jones partnership in that Man Utd Team... That will be epic!
I don't really follow football too closely, but everytime I see Phil Jones, he's usually giving it his all. There was a game where he was throwing his body on the ground to block the ball with his face, and the comments were mocking him.
That's actually really sad about his testimonial as well.
6:02 that's heartbreaking..
This is a sad story...but here, people are more interested in a small mistake in the video...
'Apart from my mum and dad, who else would show up?' 😢 That was heartbreaking to read!
Phil Jones , painful story
One of the most pleasent voiceovers on youtube
I was one of the fans that wanted Phil Jones to succeed at Manchester United but injuries ruined him. Then the memes came and the jokes and him turning down his testimonial because the fans made him a joke. If weren't for injuries then he would have been one of the greatest defenders of his generation.
In the 22/23 season he was injured from day 1 (knee) and after years of lazy bloodsucking he was released in the June of '23.
I still remember whenever Ferdinand and Vidic were not playing I would easily rely on Jones. And sometimes even Evans. Memes aside, he is a good player I don't know why they make fun of his ability. Those old days were gold.
Matic*
😢he’s so underrated
If Jones had done a Rudiger and worn a face mask for half his games he would probably be remembered more fondly. It’s incredible how much his silly facial expressions have defined him.
That mask gave rudiger super powers
What you are doing is a bit akin to victim blaming. Wouldnt the best solution be to be a decent human and not bully another person. Am sure a lot of people exist in the wprld and am sure they dont go around hiding their face. Besides it breeds more insecurity. What happens when he shows his face after hiding it for so long? Wouldnt people bully him again? Wouldnt he himself be insecure about his appearance?
@@LeMagnifiquePetiteEspirit I think he's just highlighting the undue influence his facial expressions have had on his public persona, rather than making a serious point
@@mattbutler5372 that’s exactly it mate. Bloke above is a complete idiot for thinking otherwise. Phil Jones career has been impacted as much by how memed he was as his injuries.

Correction: Maguire at Man Utd.
He was nice with Leicester and England. I don't think his bad performance is even his fault.

@@shambhav9534 he signed the contract to enter into this circumstance. Pogba has had 4 or 5 managers, its him, not them.

Yeah, ok we all know it is meant to be Vidic not Matic. Everyone chill out.
If jones didn’t have injuries I would pick him over maguire any day, so much heart
And Phil Jones is linked to West Brom again
As a Liverpool fan I knew about his injuries and his potential and it actually made me sad to see what he went through. I never trolled him and didn’t like the memes that constantly were published of him. He was a great prospect, it’s was just injuries that did him in. One thing you can say about him was he gave his all.
He have good defending skills and put his body on the line every time he plays but shame he is injury prone
The Wasted Career of Mason Greenwood
His coaches told him he could become the next Ryan Giggs. Too bad he copied Giggs off the field as well.
@@stevendchu not really something to joke about mate
That's his own fault.
Jones was one of my favourite Man United player then
His fantastic performance against Bolton in 2011 on a 5-0 win away from home always been in my mind.
Everyone thought Jones was a bad defender.
Then Came Maguire.
This is almost certainly the best channel on UA-cam.
Nemanja Vidic not Nemanja Matic
Nemanja vidic *
One of my fave players. He gives his 100% every single game.
Better than Harry Maguire
To be honest Phil Jones one match performance is still better than the whole season of Maguire on the pitch.
Jones was targeted by the fans, specifically the ones online. He made mistakes and was a victim of the mismanagement of United both as a club and on the pitch. His career, just like lingard, cleverly, smalling, and welbecks was destroyed by this
We man utd fans tried everything to stop the memes. We were fed up of rival fans calling us meme fc and making fun of our every player like lingard, Luke shaw, Lukaku, Felliani, Fred. In the end we knew that there's no going back once you are a meme so we stopped trying to defend them.
He doesn't deserve all the hate he gets ( no one does) honestly. Strong mentality
He didn't flop, the English people just over hyped and overrated him just like every other basic English youngster.
weird take. he was ruined by injuries and lack of playing time, and the reduced confidence that came with that
1:20 I didn't realise nemanja matic played under sir alex as a centre half, what a player

Phil Jones is a class defender on his day and antics aside, im glad to have seen King Jones play for the United shirt again.
I think this pandemic has taught people the importance of multiple streams of income, unfortunately having a job doesn't mean security rather having different investments is the real deal.
The economic hardship, recession, unemployment and loss of jobs caused by covid 19 pandemic is enough to push people into financial ventures..

Good talk! I said that to my friends everyday. Saving is good, but investing is much better, I used to think saving money would save me but NO, saving is just keeping it to spend later.
when you are in this business you should know where to invest, I see a lot of people who waste their money in this investment, one should know how it works and where to invest, A good strategy and manager is what you need to make good profits from trading. that's why I strongly recommend
Lord Joe Bovine and Lord Phil Jones in the same video? Simply Marvelous.
That said, I still remember the excitement around Phil Jones when he signed - I'd never heard many players compared to Duncan Edwards who's essentially a folk hero in stature for United fans. What could have been - I'm as guilty as the next guy for indulging in the memes and slander but honestly it's a tragedy. Every time I hear the testimonial story it breaks my heart - bad luck, bad judgement, poor form played their part but a huge proportion of this is what we did to him as a collective. I wish him the best, he deserves something for everything he's been through.
Poor guy, that line hit me hard about the testimonial... Very unlucky guy. My love goes out to him
He was pretty much a mainstay his 1st 4 seasons at the club, had a decent partnership with Smalling that was always amongst the best defences in the league statistically. His actual career has been somewhat overshadowed by social media foolery. Definitely a great servant of the club.
Worth adding that he played in 2 World Cups
I remember when United signed him, I was jealous at the time. Liverpool fan.
