The most simple way to 99% avoid norovirus is to wash your hands frequently and especially before going to the buffets and after leaving the toilets. It takes seconds and saves days of misery. Why do so many people find this so difficult and confusing ?
The correct word for Norovirus related symptoms is "gastric distress", not "gastronomic". Gastronomic means it is pleasing to your apetite. Gastric means it is related to your gastrointedtinal organs, such as stomache, gall bladder or intestines. Norovirus is a gastric disease, but it is not a positive gaatronomic experience unless. you enjoy nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Cruised on Princess and they are too lackadaisical about hand washing and sanitation. They don’t seem to care. I contracted Covid. I will not cruise with them again. Royal Caribbean is very encouraging of hand washing. Paxlovid and Doctors visit was $800.00. Cruised in May and still trying to get refund from insurance. Long arduous process! Princess can keep their germs and cruises.
Maybe you should have washed your hands more often. We wash our hands and sanitize our hands a ton of times throughout the day. There's no way you know where you contracted Covid!
Was recently on a HA cruise and the nice washing stations by the buffet were only used by about 2 percent of those coming to fill their plates. Terrible.
Thats every cruise. Holland used to serve people the first couple of days in buffet...all lines should just move to serving people. I don't want to touch those handles. Wash hands prior to going in, use napkin to touch handles and then hand sanitizer before I eat...
Was on a NCL Escape cruise last month. Couldn’t get into a cabin until 9;30 pm because they had to sanitize the entire ship amd cabins due to uptick of Norovirus. Everyone upset with the crew ! Really !?!? It’s the passengers that cause this not washing their hands and then going into the buffet they ask to wash hands and people refused ! So Inconsiderate !
We all got covid on the Panama Canal Cruise right after we came back from the lockdown. Only 1500 guests ship held 3500. 80% at least got it, no one said anything due to the being locked in your room policy everyone was fine 4-5 days later.
We were on Diamond Princess October and were delayed boarding for 3 hours whilst they deep cleaned. Been an issue for a while. Wife got it the day we came home!
Don’t mean to be picky but this is the definition of adjective: gastronomical relating to the practice of cooking or eating good food. "the hotel restaurant serves the most😅 exclusive gastronomic delights Probably better to say gastrointestinal issue I love your videos so don’t consider this as a negative comment about your videos."
On my last cruise (Nov. 2019) on the NCL Bliss, there was an outbreak of, what I'm guessing, was a norovirus type of illness (didn't ask, wasn't my business). The last 4/5 days there was no more serve yourself in the buffet and even the officers in their crisp white uniforms wiping down tables and touch points - elevator buttons, handrails, etc. I didn't get sick because I constantly washing or using sanitizer. I couldn't believe how many people still disregarded hand washing and/or sanitizing their hands. And I'm adding masks to my suitcase for my cruise in January.
We cruise on Holland America and Princess. We hate that on Princess people help themselves to the food at the buffet. We always wash our hands at the entrance to the buffet, but see very few people doing the same. There is usually a Princess crew member stationed there to ask people to wash, and most times they are ignored. I've seen people come out of a stall in the bathroom and leave without washing their hands. Once it was a Princess employee! I have seen people eating in the buffet line, licking their fingers and then touching the serving utensils. I have seen people touching things and then putting it back. So, if we are booking a cruise and we have a choice of Princess and HAL for similar itineraries, we will always book on HAL in large part because of how the buffet is handled. My next cruise on Princess is on the Sun, and I am happy to know that they serve in the buffet on that ship. Knowing how easily gastrointestinal bugs are passed around,, and all the extra work for the crew when there is an outbreak, it surprises me that any cruise ship allows people to self serve in the buffets
I wear a mask whenever in public because most people do not seem to cover their sneezes and coughs. Washing hands works for gastric illnesses, masks for respiratory illnesses.
and yet, the ship did not cause this, $50 per passenger, or even per cabin every time, will cost them a fair bit. That's one reason prices are so high.
@alicedyment4219 I beg to differ! All cruise lines should be serving the food at that buffet, that is where most of this norovirus is being spread. Johnny and Sue won't wash their hands, coughing in their hands and grabbing the utensils.... how many outbreaks do you hear of on Holland in which the crew serves the food at the buffet?
Given the average Joe cruiser lacks in personal hygiene ie washing hands, coughing with no precaution and no concern about exposing their fellow passengers to germs....cruise lines are going to have to go back to serving people in buffets and other procedures. As I watch Don he reconfirms my preference for land based vacations. Cruises are really problematic.
I only got Covid on our cruises , Norwegian , I go to VA hospital every week with my husband never got sick . The Norwegian rooms are not very clean , definitely not disinfected .
What precautions does Princess take to see that they don't spread their outbreak on shore while requiring everyone on the ship to disembark? Any cautions or advice on how to reduce the risk given to all passengers? How is the community hosting all of the passengers from these ships with outbreaks notified?

"Cleaning a ship of norovirus is considered very difficult due to its highly contagious nature and ability to survive on various surfaces for extended periods, requiring thorough and meticulous cleaning of every nook and cranny, including high-touch areas like handrails, door handles, and bathroom fixtures, with specialized disinfectants like bleach solutions; often necessitating deep cleaning procedures like fogging to reach hard-to-access spots and potentially isolating infected areas to prevent further spread. Key points about norovirus cleaning on a ship: Extensive reach: A ship has a vast amount of surface area to clean, including cabins, hallways, common areas, and dining spaces, making a complete clean-up very labor intensive. Focus on high-touch areas: Cleaning staff must prioritize frequently touched surfaces like door handles, railings, elevator buttons, and bathroom fixtures as these are prime spots for virus transmission. " The best way to prevent it is to wash your hand with soap and water for the amount of time it takes to sing the happy birthday song. Hand sanitizer does not work. You might notice they put hand sanitizer before the buffet. That's nice, but you need to wash your hands with soap and water to prevent norovirus. Also raw oysters may have it. So you don't put them next to other food. That is a different subject i won't go into it along with kitchen protocols If you watch people, you will probably notice that they use handrails/ elevator buttons ect then touch their faces. People always touch their eyes and mouth. Or go into the bathroom and not wash or then touch the door handle and touch their face or swipe their hair. Cov I'd didn't stop people from messing with the mask around the face. It takes practice to ignore your face and not touch that itch on your nose. People also share drinks, utensils, food ect..bathrooms...norovirus is highly contagious Also water if someone with norovirus vomits or poops in it. They should close down the pool if someone had an incident and go through procedures. I've never seen it personally. Only the pools around me with kids locally. They are very vigilante. Have a great day
There is an apostophe in both it's and your're as they are on your shirt, and there should be a comma before the word well. Grammar and spell check, please. Thank you, Don.
I don’t know about you, Don, but it looks like the cruise lines are trying to use Russian intelligence to deal with these outbreaks on cruise ships nowadays. I feel bad for the diamond princess since that’s the cruise ship that got the most attention when the pandemic got started over there in Asia. And now this. Although it’s not the cruise lines fault because nature is what it is it’s just funny how they choose to deal with these issues but in the most saddest way possible.

2:17 Content starts over two minutes in, you’re welcome.
We wash our hands as often as possible and usually have hand sanitizer with us when we can't.
Princess seems to have a lot of "outbreaks."
Illness on holiday everyone worst nightmare, hope it gets cleared up soon.
Now we are washing our hands each time we pick up something at the buffet. Thanks Don
Wash your hands when LEAVING the buffet.

Thank you. That’s what i intended to say.
I'm surprised the port if they knew the reason would have permitted the ship to disembark their passengers.

Yes, to washing hands
It’s the people’s own fault, WASH THEIR FREAKING HANDS, ESPECIALLY AFTER GOING THE BATHROOM, THERES A LOT OF NASTY PEOPLE ON THAT CRUISE.
Large outbreaks are almost always traced to food preparation. Nice try professor
Was recently on a HA cruise and the nice washing stations by the buffet were only used by about 2 percent of those coming to fill their plates. Terrible.
Nice segway@@Nrustica
Thats every cruise. Holland used to serve people the first couple of days in buffet...all lines should just move to serving people. I don't want to touch those handles. Wash hands prior to going in, use napkin to touch handles and then hand sanitizer before I eat...
The last time I saw a video on this subject, I did some searching. Norovirus can also be caught through the air.
Was on a NCL Escape cruise last month. Couldn’t get into a cabin until 9;30 pm because they had to sanitize the entire ship amd cabins due to uptick of Norovirus. Everyone upset with the crew ! On one of our cruises quite a few people caught Covid. We did not, but we stay fully vaccinated and are very careful about washing hands.
Yes, Norovirus on Enchantment OTS. Though, it has been over a year ago.
I'm sick from not being able to cruise more!😎
If they spray for bedbugs you don't want to be there for at least 2 weeks afterwards. Unless they use steam, it's taxic AF.
Don, you look great today!
Leaving the ship to be cleaned would be very hard for us with the wherlchair 🦽 or scooter , we always stay in . Hope it will not rain 🌧️
Is it wrong that before I even clicked on the video that I had already assumed that it was princess?
Don’t mean to be picky but this is the definition of adjective: gastronomical

Don, you need to remind Princess cruisers to adhere to cleanliness protocols.

Humans will never, never learn.
2023 Saling.on the crown Princess there was not hand washing sinks outside of the buffet
I've never gotten sick on a cruise, knowing on wood!

Oh my Goodness that's serious. Wash your hands , cover your sneezes and coughs.
I wear a mask whenever in public because most people do not seem to cover their sneezes and coughs. Washing hands works for gastric illnesses, masks for respiratory illnesses.
First thing I thought about, passengers with mobility issues. $50 is sad when you're off for 6 hours. Outbreaks are not going anywhere
What if you’re in the middle of “stomach issues”? I want to be right next to you own private bathroom 😂
@cathecavalle1016 exactly
I heard that they had to get off at every port for up to 6 hrs! They had no choice and not planning on spending any money 😡 $50 is CRAP!
and yet, the ship did not cause this, $50 per passenger, or even per cabin every time, will cost them a fair bit. That's one reason prices are so high.

That thumbnail had my chuckling for atleast 5 minutes lol
A fellow passenger caught a cold. He thought it was a cold, but could have been Covid.
How often do people have to be told to wash their hands?
Lot of people still not washing there hands. I just got off 2 cruises and see first hand.
AND ….!!! What if you didn’t have the money to buy another excursion??? WHAT THEN??? could they just get off and walk around said port???
I only got Covid on our cruises , Norwegian , I go to VA hospital every week with my husband never got sick . The Norwegian rooms are not very clean , definitely not disinfected .

Don't eat the sea food. Thats where you'll get it from
Too bad about the out breaks
Of course! Let the sickness begin.
Don! That thumbnail is hilarious!

Good day. Don.Jamaica 🇯🇲
Just wash your hands it does not take that long.
Is this due to staff or passengers?

Clorox to the rescue. Bleach. Only sea sick when the seas got rough.
Yay, I am first!
