Phil Smith gives a master class at the 2016 National Trumpet Competition on Friday, March 11, 2016 in The Studio Theatre at Columbus State University, Columbus, GA.
Phil Smith, the greatest trumpet player EVER! I first heard him at age 16 playing Mahler's 3rd....in 1982....for the next 30 something years I would always catch Phil performing all the standards.....Mahler's 5th was my favorite treat. I just met Chris Martin yesterday in person and he's a wonderful and talented guy but Phil Smith will always be the NY Phil principal to me. It was great to hear him play for a few minutes at the Holiday Brass.
This video is a great resource for life in general. I'm not even a musician. I just really enjoy listening to pros speak about how they achieved their level of success. Thanks, Phil!
Anytime we overdo anything we will fail! The trick, if you will, is to recognize when we've over done it and rest long enough to allow ourselves to recover so our bodies, mind and spirit etc can rejuvenate and continue the growth process!!!
Incredible!! I love how he discusses trumpet playing in the context of real life. Great to hear how much wisdom he has for not only preparing for an audition, but sticking through difficult times. Superb.
I have an audition coming up, and this master class has helped me so much. It has guided me to the success. My favorite quote was: "If you fail to prepare, then you prepare to fail."
Thank you for the words of wisdom. Experience in life can be up and down but your faith is evident. I loved this presentation and your stand for faith in God is evident. I am moving to Athens and would dearly love to finally meet you. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
speaking about his father, I met him once in Switzerland I was a young musician. A very fine cornet player and a a very kind person. Not surprising that Philip also is a very attaching guy and such a great musician
Thank you for sharing your amazing gift. Met you at Gregg Black' s shop in West Orange years ago when getting my 3C backbore drilled out to a 24. You're an inspiration. Although you're an elite artist, you are giving of the key, if those that listen are actually hearing what you are saying. Appreciative of it in Toms River, NJ
Thanks Phil! Trumpeters!! Check out and research Prof. William B. Fielder while you're here!! Just trying to preserve his legacy! Passing it on is s part of the culture! Air flow is crucial!
Funny story about his humility (well, funny to me), he attended for many years the church that my sister was music director of, and when I went to visit for Christmas, a couple times we played trumpet together backing up hymns. He'd take the 2nd trumpet part, which cracked me up, as he was 10X the player I was.
Brilliant master class!!!!

Thanks SO much for including the glory of God. What a great masterclass!!!
It warms my heart to see professional musicians of this caliber giving glory to God. I hope to be one of them one day.
One of my favorite trumpet & cornet players of all time - thank you Phil for being a true inspiration.

Man do we miss him in NY.

Also remember, no one can intimidate you if you're over prepared!

He’s said that he’s nowhere near how good he was in New York but I think he’s surely much better than he says he is.
Alguien puede traducirlo al español? sería muy interesante...
Again anyone who could let me know who is asked him to play the opening of Also sprach Zarathustra in 7:56 would be appreciated!
Nicely presented.Thk you.
Anyone could tell me what he is saying between 00:27 to 00:30 would be appreciated.
Rooting my Dogs(UGA Bulldogs) on
John Dane lowkey I thought he said “dark fellows” but that seems more likely LOL
Incredible musician, incredible trumpeter, too much proselytizing.
Dennis Ferry He’s genuine and that is better then being fake.
True. That’s a healthy way of playing. Thank You.
