We ask how we can push for harmony when racial discrimination still exists?. How can Australia demand harmony when it continues to punish persecuted refugees fleeing their homes by boats because of racially motivated violence? Australian Mandatory detention is a policy and it is set up to target directly POC refugees coming by boats. Australia needs to recognise that racial discrimination continues to exist before it can even contemplate asking us to live in harmony. For the past 3 decades, Australia has been progressively implementing punitive and cruel policies against people seeking asylum by boat. These policies have been maintained by successive Australian governments resulting in systemic torture and abuse of refugee/asylum seeker adults and children, and deaths in custody. Australia, a country that is built on Genocide and remains to keep refugees in onshore and offshore concentration camps avoids calling today (21st of March) ‘International day for the elimination of Racism’ and makes it into a grotesque government propaganda fest called Harmony Day instead. Harmony day is a tokenistic celebration where people of colour are forced to pretend and are expected to “hold hands walking together or share a plate of food” with oppressors and share their culture “TO CELEBRATE DIVERSITY". This injustice is propagated while most of our community members are victims of institutionalized racism so called harmonious Australia. This is the norm practice for white people and it highlights Australians are far behind the bench mark of even the standard set in the western world. In Australia, the eX-detainee community is arguably ONE of the poorest, racially profiled and systematically discriminated community group. How about teaching our children to have respect and compassion for others at all times instead of trying to make these messages "stick" just one day of the year? All of us and especially our children, constantly see adults treating others disrespectfully and with contempt, both in various media and even by those who are supposedly leading us.
