Luvdisc does have an important artistic role! It and Finneon are ever-present ''filler mons'' in any underwater pokémon scene, thanks to nice, easily readable silhouettes, to their small size meaning they can school without taking up too much space, and simple designs meaning they don't take away from the main subject. Not every Pokémon has to be good at battling.
I'm not asking for every mon to be Gholdengo, but I _am_ asking the multi-million dollar company who owns a multi-billion dollar franchise to at least take the time to go over the ~200 or so fully evolved/one stage Pokemon that perform horribly in battle to boost them up from, for example, base 30 Attack and base 40 Sp. Atk.
I'd argue that Luvdisc isn't a filler mon at all because it has one very specific niche that no other pokemon has. It's the easiest unlimited source of heart scales in every game it's in. Finneon and Lumineon have legit no reason to exist though, don't ever compare that complete worthless garbage (actually never mind that's an insult to garbage(sorry Garbodor)) to the silly heart scale pokemon.

The thing is, qwilfish has been pretty solid in multiple tiers, even as late as current gen, where it was pretty solid, IIRC, in some earlier versions of NU. The thing is, in addition to a very solid typing, qwilfish has an ability and move pool that work really well for it, allowing it to be an effective hazard setter and also check physical mons. And it also was given a regional form with an even better type combination, and which evolves, allowing it to hold an eviolite, and that regional forms evolution has a similar enough role (can be a bulky hazard setter or a breaker, with two excellent abilities that each help one of those roles) that allows it to exist in some way up in current NUBL. Yanma was also given a evolution with good enough abilities and stats to hold up in RU. Luvdisc, on the other hand, has gotten basically nothing. Even its decent ability has always been available to it, and has never been enough for it to be good.
Back in the day we use to do unrestricted free for all multi battles. In the face of Mega Rayquazzas and Primals, I started bringing a Luvdisc. Who would think twice about a Luvdisc in the face of Ubers?
It is actually a good support mon in doubles. With access to moves like rain dance, entrainment, soak. Passing swift swim to another mon with entrainment is pretty good.
Of course, there's the confusing "why isn't it a baby Alomomola" thing, but... if not that... Why not just give it some way better support moves? And tune up its Speed to match the newer gens. Leave the other stats alone - it can still be weak as hell while having SOME modicum of a purpose. Let it be Water-type Murkrow. (I know Murkrow is SLOWER, but it has Prankster. So Luvdisc needs more speed to make up for that.)
There is one metagame where Luvdisc is really terrifying, and that is Smogon's Random Battle Mayhem, a random metagame where the type chart is inverted, each mon's types are based on their first two move slots, every pokemon has every ability from each teammate previously sent out, and, most importantly for Luvdisc, every mon has their BST scaled to 600. Even without rain the thing hits high 400s speed and can hit like a truck. Sometimes low stats have their high ponts.
Couple of buff ideas: - a held Heart Scale gives a Light Ball boost, or similar - hidden ability Lover’s Touch, basically the Poison Touch equivalent of Cute Charm - hidden ability Love Blessing, infatuating all other Pokemon on the field upon entry, including the Doubles partner - as above, but if any other Pokemon also has Love Blessing then they both get an omniboost - a Dondozo/Tatsugiri-like relationship with Corsola - hidden ability Schooling, changing it into a Water/Fairy monster with sweeper stats
It’s decent in random battles where it get endeavor, whirlpool, hydro pump, and substitute. Whirlpool traps, substitute gets you to low health, endeavor gets your opponent to low health, and hydro pump lets you take the kill. Nice way to take out a key threat on the opponent’s team.
Well Delibird got a really good paradox version of it, so I think they should do something like that for Luvdisc, it would be so funny to see some version of Luvdisc that's actually a viable threat
Have you been doing voice training? Your voice has changed a lot here compared to the last time I saw one of your vids. If so, you're doing great and you've made a pretty big change! Good job :)
The worst part is it could've been given more lore. Now I shall make shit up: "It is said that trainers who have lost the love of their life will release Alomomola in the hopes others could find love & to helps the trainer let go of their sadness." Can't tell me that wouldn't have been a cool Pokedex entry had they simply made Lucdisc & Alomomola part of the same evolution line.
I ran a goofy doubles set with protect, soak, endeavor, and icy wind and I managed to get to 1200 on the reg H ladder which is pretty good given that there was a luvdisc on my team
Luvdisc is OP. It's signature ability allows it to auto-win 10% of the time when your opponent passes out from laughing at your audacity for using Luvdisc.
as a really bad randbats player I'm shocked you didn't mention the one thing I know it for, which is clicking substitute 4 times to get to 1 hp and using endeavor. since it's always a super high level due to sucking, it usually outspeeds most pokemon and can finish them off with a non priority attack. it can also use whirlpool to trap, if the opponent decides not to kill it immediately
I am surprised that Ballsac has that low of a winrate in ranbats because while it is easily one of the most telegraphed pokemon, it is so annoying knowing that you at least going 1 for 1 if you don't have an adequate switch in or ghost type
Even though it isnt good the sub endeavour set in ranbats is quite funny. If it subs from full hp it can lower any slower pokemon to 1 hp which feels satisfying even if it is basically always a trade and it almost never kos anything
In the fan game Pokemon Rejuvenation, Luvdisc gets a unique held item that makes all of its moves’ base powers equal to its friendship - 255 bp rain-boosted aqua jet is surprisingly okay, even off of 30 base attack. It’s still not a very good mon, of course, but at least it’s usable!
They did nerf Luvdisc in SV, because its support combo moves of Entrainment and Heal Pulse made Kyogre unbeatable when paired as its support ally. Especially against Mega Rayquaza, where due to Luvdisc naturally outspeeding regular Rayquaza would always get Entrainment off first to wipe its Delta Stream or Primal Groudon's Desolare Land and land a guarenteed KO from Kyogre's Ice Beam on Rayquaza and just drop Groudon with any water move. Its icy wind even came in handy in mirror matches, since Luvdisc under rain outspeeds scarf Kyogre, letting Icy Wind get your Kyogre to outspeed and KO with Thunder. It was its only niche back in Mega era gens of 6 - 7, and it was so overwhelming in the rare instances it was used that they took the moves away in SV to forever nerf the poor thing. If you ever make an update about it, remember it at its brief peak. It was surprisingly better than you'd expect as a supporter.
They should give Luvdisc a signature move or ability that increases the power of the move or the stats of Luvdisc which scales with the amount of Heart Scales you have in your inventory. Imagine if it got a 250 BP Special water move with 100% accuracy and no drawbacks or got a 1% increase in it stats per Heart Scale (so capped at 99%). Or Something whacky like that. This would give Luvdisc a fun gimmick in game that makes it usable while likely still garbage in competitive (just less so).
i have a luvdisc set i made for a joke mono-water shitmon team that actually manages to have a degree of presence. it’s definitely not great because it’s still luvdisc but at least it has a niche* in doubles Luvdisc @ Focus Sash Ability: Swift Swim Tera Type: Water EVs: 168 HP / 84 Def / 4 SpD / 252 Spe Jolly Nature - Icy Wind - Baby-Doll Eyes - Attract - Flip Turn

Even its decent ability has always been available to it, and has never been enough for it to be good.
tbh running into a lv100 luvdisc in randbats and getting hit by a lightning-fast charm does suck to face, i'll give it that
Back in the day we use to do unrestricted free for all multi battles.
I did casually play emerald and my luvdisc was really helpful, more than my altaria
It has a niche! It can give its swift swim ability in doubles to its rain setting partner like Kyogre
Or give it a different evolution.
Could you please talk about Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, and Arceus soon?
in randbats it can usually at least trade one for one which is pretty good for a luvdisc
Couple of buff ideas:
- a held Heart Scale gives a Light Ball boost, or similar
- hidden ability Lover’s Touch, basically the Poison Touch equivalent of Cute Charm
- hidden ability Love Blessing, infatuating all other Pokemon on the field upon entry, including the Doubles partner
- as above, but if any other Pokemon also has Love Blessing then they both get an omniboost
- a Dondozo/Tatsugiri-like relationship with Corsola
- hidden ability Schooling, changing it into a Water/Fairy monster with sweeper stats
a Luvdisc once messed me up in a setup team
i wish i was kidding
It’s decent in random battles where it get endeavor, whirlpool, hydro pump, and substitute. Whirlpool traps, substitute gets you to low health, endeavor gets your opponent to low health, and hydro pump lets you take the kill. Nice way to take out a key threat on the opponent’s team.
Luvdisc: Master of Jack
They should give luvdisc friend guard. It fits and would at least give it some role in battle
Once my friends made a monotype fire tournament with only 4 mons allowed per team.
Welcome to UU, luvdisc
Well Delibird got a really good paradox version of it, so I think they should do something like that for Luvdisc, it would be so funny to see some version of Luvdisc that's actually a viable threat
Have you been doing voice training? Your voice has changed a lot here compared to the last time I saw one of your vids. If so, you're doing great and you've made a pretty big change! Good job :)
Whoever made Luvdisc was definitely screwed over by love
Funny how you can't even use this in 320 cup because of 10 goddamn bst points
It just straight up needs a gigantic stat buff. +20 to HP, Defenses, and Special Attack, and then bring it up to 105 speed.
damn homegirl really hopped on the mic to fucking power dunk on luvdisc for four straight minutes
One of my favorite Pokémon~💖
The worst part is it could've been given more lore. Now I shall make shit up: "It is said that trainers who have lost the love of their life will release Alomomola in the hopes others could find love & to helps the trainer let go of their sadness."
Can't tell me that wouldn't have been a cool Pokedex entry had they simply made Lucdisc & Alomomola part of the same evolution line.
If there were competitive contests, luvdisc would have a chance
Really should have evolved into Alomomola. Outside of farming heart scales this thing kinda sucks
My first freaking shiny because I was falling heart scales. Curse this thing
I ran a goofy doubles set with protect, soak, endeavor, and icy wind and I managed to get to 1200 on the reg H ladder which is pretty good given that there was a luvdisc on my team
97 is such a sad speed stat when that's by far the highest stat number you have to offer
Luvdisc is OP. It's signature ability allows it to auto-win 10% of the time when your opponent passes out from laughing at your audacity for using Luvdisc.
the dislikes are the hardcore Luvdisc fans
Filler pokemon, which isn't bad
Just wait, EWGF, someday Luvdisc will be the sole recipient of a new ability that doubles special attack, and it'll MAYBE be useable in ZU!
The heart scales are no longer needed for the games & that's a good thing but Luvdisk will be remembered by the fans. #BuffLuvdisk
A singular gimmick and it didn't even excel at that
as a really bad randbats player I'm shocked you didn't mention the one thing I know it for, which is clicking substitute 4 times to get to 1 hp and using endeavor. since it's always a super high level due to sucking, it usually outspeeds most pokemon and can finish them off with a non priority attack. it can also use whirlpool to trap, if the opponent decides not to kill it immediately
I am surprised that Ballsac has that low of a winrate in ranbats because while it is easily one of the most telegraphed pokemon, it is so annoying knowing that you at least going 1 for 1 if you don't have an adequate switch in or ghost type
Sounds like a -1 to me
Even though it isnt good the sub endeavour set in ranbats is quite funny. If it subs from full hp it can lower any slower pokemon to 1 hp which feels satisfying even if it is basically always a trade and it almost never kos anything
When farming heart scales I accidentally caught a shiny one lol. Lost my mind because it was the first shiny I caught myself
Luvdisc in randoms goes kinda crazy
it can potentally do the funny of giving kyogre, archaludon or any rain abuser swift swim with entrainment,
They did nerf Luvdisc in SV, because its support combo moves of Entrainment and Heal Pulse made Kyogre unbeatable when paired as its support ally.
This would give Luvdisc a fun gimmick in game that makes it usable while likely still garbage in competitive (just less so).
luvdisc scariest rands threat...
Forget one evo, Luvdisc needs two plus a mega to be viable
It has swift swin + entrainment
just had to use this thing in random doubles in showdown. Im so tired
i have a luvdisc set i made for a joke mono-water shitmon team that actually manages to have a degree of presence. it’s definitely not great because it’s still luvdisc but at least it has a niche* in doubles
Luvdisc @ Focus Sash
Ability: Swift Swim
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 168 HP / 84 Def / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Icy Wind
- Baby-Doll Eyes
- Attract
- Flip Turn
in gen 9 showdown randoms, luvdisc's moveset is whirlpool, sub, and emdeavor. I dont even remember the fourth move.
Liechi Berry Luvdisc with
Flail
Endure
Aqua Jet
Rain Dance
HEYYYY, im still wondering where do you get those pokemon head icons you use TwT
where can you check randbats winrates?
Luvdisc is ok in Gen 3 randbats thanks to its access to fast toxic and water typing. Has netted me many wins with that alone, and its enough for me to say "alright not bad" when i see it on my team
In gen 3, it's outclassed by Squirtle...
with so much (and evergrowing) mons that suck,I think gf needs a team that merely focuses on balancing so they can give the entire dex some love here and there
"Let's talk about it's traits"
Lack there off, actually
My first shiny Pokemon!
