    I hope all the restrictions that China is putting on the game industry makes the game industry just say "you know what, it's not worth it" then our gaming companies can get off their knees and make decent games that don't have to bend over to China.
    Now that won't happen and we'll likely see a giant increase to development cost because companies will make two copies of everything lol. Wonder how this will effect mobile games over there.

    While I don't agree with you immediately writing off Genshin, I will say that I was just as disappointed in the anniversary "rewards" as much as everyone else and the major reward we got was a cop out or how people put it more gently as "damage control". Joe just hates that its a gacha game even though its no where as tedious as every other gacha game plus he hasn't played it. Personally I've always respected AJ's, OJ's and Alex's opinion but it does really bother me that when he described Genshin he said that it's just a grindy game that's compeletely shit, while I can't really justify Gacha mechanics in any game, AJSA felt like a steriotipical close minded old man that think everyone can just buy $1000+ PC gaming rigs and shill out $60 everytime I want to play a game, on top of that it's like he hasn't played a single AAA game in a while (it's not just mobile games that are a problem). While yes I do play Genshin as a F2P, it is justifiably a very good game (of course with it ups and downs) and considering that most of the AAA games that I want to play are going for that realistic high poligon count graphical style, even if I 'm able to buy them I can't run them, compare that to a game that can run on anything.

      It's weird how the standard is applied differently to genshin. Grinding isn't a new thing that genshin did. Mmorpgs, rgps, looter games all have a form of grinding (heck some can even be worse) yet somehow when Genshin did it is bad?
      And that's not taking into account the gacha. Genshin's gacha is far more generous than most out there but eh, ask the plebs and they'd said it is the worse gacha out there lol.

    A whole year genshin player here, and here's my take:
    I have an absolute love-and-hate relationship with this game, and I think this is the only game I feel like that. I LOVE soooo much the open world and stuff you can do while exploring. Discovering hidden secrets, solving puzzles (they're not lame surprisingly), finding out deep lore behind, gorgeous bgm, doing some fun limited events, and many more.
    But I absolutely HATE the game's monetization scheme, and I won't talk about that bcoz, you know, gatcha. Annoying bugs and missing QoL improvement are also there. And worst, dev being a radio-silent for a long time with their audience what really grinds my gear.
    Overall I like Genshin as a video game, and hate the business model. It's definitely above the mobile game experience of any game on that platform could ever deliver, at least for now.
    And it's such a shame to you Joe, for giving such fully biased opinion and proudly tell you never even played the game once. Should've played it first then give your thoughts after that.

    • @Leyeldamac
      @Leyeldamac 3 роки тому +7

      joe will be joe. i understand his viewpoint though. I played Genshin for about 6 months and played a bit more when they unlocked the mountain region. As you said, my only problem is the monetization scheme. But I would also add that the game is built around it in such a way as to be inseparable. im not a grindy person. i reached the endgame, ran out out of materials, and quickly stopped playing. I get some people are into that. not me. its also a shame that the QOL and updates are just not substantial in any way. with the amount of money they've made, its genuinely frustrating to see these minor updates that just add new gacha characters and little in the way of exploration, new areas, new anything non-monetized. and the only reason this is all so frustrating is because i did love playing that game for 6 months. it had a ton of potential.
      And if they had added meaningful content i would've been back. Now, there have been so many limited edition events/characters/items, that if I did get back into it. id feel behind the curve of fans of the game who did spend that time grinding for materials for unending hours and/or spending the money in its place. truly a shame.
      Don't take all this criticism as hate. i love the music, exploration, regions, and occasional lore (really wish they dug more into that). that's what kept me playing for months but when you reach that grind point, the magic falls apart and all that's left is the very blatant machine pushing you to spend time and money.

    • @svd355
      @svd355 3 роки тому +3

      @@Leyeldamac I do agree though. I'm at AR 56 and it seems nothing else to do. End game content are such a lackluster. Abyss once fully done and, thats it. Artifact grindings has been a painful activity. Even so, I'm still going to play the game, waiting for future contents and new regions.
      But that initial impression, the first time I started the game and exploring Teyvat, man it's been a while, even for a AAA titles gave me such huge satisfaction. Truly an unforgettable gaming experience. Now for a new player, with Inazuma region unlocked, it'll be even more immersive. They really nailed the world design.

    • @boulavard
      @boulavard 3 роки тому +3

      I feel exactly the same way you do. Even if a player just goes F2P, there is no content they cannot experience. They are only limited to the chances they have to obtain certain characters and weapons. I know Joe and the others do not like Gotcha games, and for good reason, but the've never even played the game and their bashing it and its players. I will not defend the gotcha system, but even as a F2P game its good.

      I really loved Genshin Impact back in the early days, and I was really hopeful for it, especially with how much potential it had (or seemed to have).
      But I stopped playing within a few months when I realized how badly the game was limited to its medium as both a mobile game (main audience), and as a gacha game.
      I was disappointed that certain things like monetization, QoL, Combat, Controls, multiplayer/instances, would never be able to evolve, or change much for the better due to this.
      I started on PC but when I tried the game on mobile, that's when it all clicked and a lot of the poor design decisions made more sense. Needless to say, a lot of my hopes for the game were crushed.
      It's a shame because the atmosphere, world design and even certain aspects of the story were phenomenal.

  • @vagrant2863
    @vagrant2863 3 роки тому +47

    Not saying Angry Joe has to play Genshin to pass judgment on it but he should at least learn more about the mobile gaming space. It'd help the news portion since he'd be able to give a more informed opinion on if the space is going to get worse or better and what mobile games should aspire to be. The sea of mobile games is vast and boiling it all down to monetization alone ignores a lot of other important factors. Some of those factors, like data collection, player interaction, and gameplay style, are important too. Might also help Joe see how AAA companies pile in more garbage mobile game tactics than just grinding and microtransactions.

      Sorry, mister, but you are 300% wrong.
      Do you remember, all the movies that were made, from several decades ago to , let's say, 2010, when most movies were about that American super hero/ soldier/marines/etc, that had infinite power, and had to save the planet from some aliens, or some bad Russian/ iranian terrorists... and the few times that Asians were represented in those movies, they would look like useless idiots...?
      Then, big investment companies from china started putting billions on Hollywood... and guess what happened ? Suddenly, the brave heroes who would save the planet were... chinese!
      -2012.. about the end of the planet. Where and who builds the big arks ? Asians/china/Tibet
      -mortal engines... who saved the last ship from destruction, and access the most protected and best place on earth ? Chinese
      I could give you hundreds of other examples
      The Mulan movie was overseen by the chinese authorities, to make sure china, Chinese, etc values were correctly represented..
      Since the chinese cash flooded Hollywood , everything is about china, or at least, china must be depicted perfectly, as the true reference, best values, etc, where the people is happy to live under the communist regime...!
      The same is/ will happen, to video games.
      What will the western gaming studios choose ?
      Will they create their games, scenarios, characters, stories, etc, in a way to please 10 to 30 million potential american/european/uk gamers, and risk being banned by the chinese authorities...?
      ...or will they create and adapt their games so they can be released in china, and reach some potential 100..200...300 million chinese gamers, and risk pissing off a bunch of american/European gamers, and lose a few million sales...?
      Of course they will choose china. Why making 10 or 15 games 'for americans', and only make 1 or 2 billions, when they can make 4 or 5 billions, in china alone, with only 1 or 2 titles...
      The only positive thing that could come from these chinese policies, is limiting the amount of allowed microtransactions...
      If suddenly the chinese versions came with much less microtransactions, and much cheaper, american and European gamers would start complaining 'hey, why are we paying for all the in-game crap, when in china, most/all game items are free ? '

      At the end, if there is a ton of gamers ready to pay a ton of extra cash on microtransactions, why would the studios not sell those microtransactions... and build their games entirely around monetization schemes...?
      So sad...
      I sometimes wonder what the gaming industry, devs, etc, think about gamers, and microtransactions.. they must think:
      'Wow, how stupid these gamers are, to accept paying 20 bucks for a stupid digital skin, item, etc, that took a junior 3d designer 5 minutes to create !'

    It is always funny though to see Joe think that it's young children spending hundreds/thousands of dollars on games like Genshin Impact when it's usually fully grown adults. Where the heck would kids get all this money from? Think they get to spend Mom's paycheck whenever they want? The irony is that most if not all of the Genshin Impact content creators are all grown adults, and if you do some research you'll see that it's usually adults with decent jobs paying upwards of ten thousands of dollars on these mobile games. Since these games are free you do not have to spend a dime and just enjoy the story or just something to do in the mean time. If the game was shit it wouldn't be making 2 billion in a year. Especially since as a F2P player you can still achieve everything rather easily in end game, sure you will not get all of the characters but I am content with that as at end game you are mainly focusing on dumping resources on like 4-6 characters while the rest remains like lvl20 or 50 lol.

    Personally I feel like Genshin is the best "mobile" game out there. (Even though it's on PC and PS)
    The world is huge and still getting bigger so there's a lot to explore and new monsters to fight.
    There's always an event going on so you can earn premium currency free and even if you didn't summon you can beat the entirety of the game with the characters you got for free in the beginning of the game. They also give you free characters every once in a while with Aloy, a free 5* Collab character coming up soon which is a really strong character.
    Gacha is an issue but the biggest problem I have with the game is Constellations... and the anniversary rewards but literally its mostly just that you get a character and you have to get them 6 more times to use thier full potential.
    Just pulling one of them would be around $100 and that's not even mentioning the weapon they come out with.
    But even so this game is completely free to play and they definitely didn't half ass this game like other Gacha games do.

      At the same time however, Genshin offers basically a fully fledged JRPG for completely free. You don't have to grind out characters to play the game, you can simply reduce the World Level and make things easier if you just want the story. It doesn't shove the microtransaction into your fasce at every corner, so you can ignore them easily (unlike in Ubisoft games where you see them every time you open a fucking menu). I would argue it is less monetized than full price Ubisoft game, if it wasn't for the fact that gacha is still a lootbox system. I gotta agree with what the people are saying in regards to the AJS crew's opinions on Genshin Impact
    while the gacha system, timer dependent gameplay and for where I am in the game, lack of true endgame content is an understandable turn-off for a bunch of people, completely disregarding everything else the game does and acting like it is any other mobile game shovelware based off of nothing but ignorance is being disingenuous as well.
    There is genuinely a lot of love put into the game, from its music, its setting to even its cast of characters (each of which have their own individual dedicated fanbases and rack in tons of fan art and cosplays). Its microtransactions are FAR from the most offensive, to the point where even some AAA games have worse P2W systems, and despite people labeling it as a "mobile game" it feels more like a AA or AAA game that also happens to have a mobile port with the care that goes into the worldbuilding and story.

Since the Traveler can be either Aether or Lumine and the characters dialog with them in the Serenitea pot can get quite flirty with more than a few of the characters regardless of their sex that will be a big thing they would need to address... assuming its like that in the Chinese version. Mihoyo may have played it smart and tried to please both crowds an censored the Chinese version ahead of time.
      But as the for the story... thats a little risky. There has been plenty of moral ambiguity in the game so far which is cause for concern regarding the moral censorship, however this largely will depend on how the censorship is interpreted. Do they mean that there can be NO moral ambiguity at all? I.E. villains and supporting characters can't be complex? Or does it simply mean THE PLAYER can't have the option of choosing good or evil? If its the later I don't think thats an issue as the Travler is clearly good with good intentions. I understand why he gave up finding good mobile games, since it really is a seemingly impossible endeavor at times. It’s the same thing with free to play microtransactions. People were rightly worried that it would spread and be included in console games, and it has, despite people saying it would never happen, and saying stupid things like, “if you don’t like it, don’t buy it”.

Perfect examples are the people with thousands of hours in CSGO and DOTA2 on steam with only about 5% time wasted on other games. Just like that Genshin Impact lures people in with their color pallet and anime style and that's about it. They just keep on playing that game for thousands of hours like the CSGO and dota2 players. And a lot of people in their 20s in 1st world countries are single so they don't waste a lot of money so they waste it on the video games they play. So it hooks a lot of whales basically. There's real value to the game if all that plus the story, the events and the multiplayer are free. You can pay if you want more pulls, but by doing comissions and quests you can still get the same amount.
    Also, progresion is not tied to payment and the game is ofter very generous with it's rewards by the free monthly Battle Pass.
