THANK YOU for what you said about history. It's so important that we don't erase or rewrite history just because it makes people uncomfortable!

I agree with you so much about how we should not tone down history. The truth always needs to be told, no matter how much we feel uncomfortable about it.

One of my favorite recent non-fiction reads was Soil: The Story of a Black Mother's Garden, and I thought about you several times while reading it. I think it's something you would enjoy. It's a combination of nature writing, memoir, and social commentary/history. I thought it was lovely. I listened to the audio version, which is read by author.

I can't wait to hear what you think of Lolita. I read it in my 20s and loved it. I thought the book was sensual, erotic, provocative and written beautifully! It instantly became a favorite of mine. Then I attempted to read it again last year and couldn't finish it. I stopped after a 1/4 of it. I found it widely disturbing and repulsive. It's crazy how time can change things. 😆

I tried to read it last year and felt the same! I was so disturbed and repulsed I stopped reading it a little ways in.

I enjoyed Lessons in Chemistry (it was very readable), but Zott's personality kind of bothered me. I'm a female engineer and I feel like there's this stereotype that women in STEM can be cold, logical and unemotional and... that's kinda Zott's character? But I'm excited for the TV adaptation and will be watching!

I haven’t read Wild yet but also heard of the „controversy“- a part of me wonders if this is because a female is being honest with her past not so good decisions and being extra harshly criticized for it because she’s not male (this really is only speculation though, I’ll know for sure once I read it!)

I've long thought that you'd enjoy Floating Coast by Bathsheba Demuth. It's a well written mixture of American, British, Indigenous, and Russian political and ecological history of whales.

Just finished the first book of the Ashley Weaver series, and I LOVED it! I picked up this book because of you and I just wanted to thank you. It was exactly the type of story I was looking for. I can't wait to read the next two books!

The depiction of sexism in Lessons in Chemistry, although uncomfortable, I believe to be true. Historically and currently. I’m not a scientist, but I read work from and about female scientists who portray sexism as an ongoing issue. There is a good 2020 documentary film that I’d refer folks to watch: “Picture a Scientist.” Lessons in Chemistry is a great read!

I finished Along Came a Llama yesterday because I saw your compelling one word review on good reads - “DELIGHTFUL!” Loved it as well. ❤ But oh man…. I was left hanging at the end! Even googled it to see if there was ANY follow up, even though this was nearly 50 years ago. Today I’m doing a major pivot and am reading Bunny. 😆

I’m so glad you liked Lessons in Chemistry. I think this book is powerful because it gives such a powerful message to women of all ages, from teenagers to beyond retirement. I also think the first half is is the best, not because the second half is a disappointment, but, because I like to see a strong woman struggle and succeed. By the second half that has already happened so the struggle is over. However, I loved the in-your-face ending!

YES, a thousand times YES to that situation in Happy Place - I was like, wait, what, you waited for 225 pages to drop this? I really think this was a women's contemporary fiction book masquerading as a romance - and it failed at both

I have listened to numerous other book tubers and none come close to your presentation. You are so clear, concise, and inspiring. Thank you. I have also read Ashley Weaver's books, all three, and was also amazed that they just seem to keep getting better and better. Also, Wild is a favorite of mine. I think Cheryl is amazing in her soul-searching honesty. Love Tiny Beautiful Things also. I am excited for you to read Inheritance, I really enjoyed this and hope you do too. I have a couple recommendations: The Bee Keeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King. She has written many follow-up books, some better than others. But if you enjoy Bee Keeper's, please at least read the next one, A Monstrous Regiment of Women. Thanks again for your reviews, I look forward to them so much.

I really need to get Lessons in Chemistry for my family, it really sounds like a book both my mom and sister would enjoy. I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts about Lolita if you get to it, I read it years ago and its a very polarising and disturbing book-which is what the author intended and I think some people forget that.

I really liked Lessons in Chemistry. I liked the “romance” and that she included the dog's point of view. I liked the characters personalities in spite of the eccentricity. The things people don’t like is the way things were. Don’t look away. Learn and recognize how society changes and how it doesn’t. Happy Place was not my favorite Emily Henry novel, but it was entertaining. Her banter is great.

A great alternative to the Thread book would be "Fabric: the hidden history of the material world' by Victoria Finlay. I see you have it on your TBR and I recently read it and loved it. Not so dense as Threads of Life sounds to be, but still informative and full of interest. Even some grief memoir aspects in it! The Llama book is totally now on my TBR and I love your shirt!
