Meredith, thank you for this very helpful video. Would love to see your plants in bloom and how well they hide the utility box.can't wait to look at your other videos!
I plan to plant some of these myself. Just a heads up I’ve had miscanthus in the past and I’ve trimmed it down very efficiently with electric hedge trimmers. Much easier than this manual work and I also did it without the garden tape but that’s nice to help keep it bundled for sure. Thanks for sharing!
I am just now planting my grass, I just bought some from HD . Is there anything I need to do? When do I prune them. I saw this grass growing in a bed at the school and I thought it was beautiful.
Great video.....I have several plants of pink muhly. I live in South West Fl. They have been through one flowering period but I'm not sure when to prune them. I pruned them approx. 3 most. ago (not as low as you) and they are beginning to flower again...we are starting our rainy hot summer here.
Stephanie Beazley You will want to prune them as low as possible. The dead grass will start to get thick so I will take a hard rake and try to break that up too if it gets really bad. It just helps with the growth the following season.
I have over 50 different types of ornamental grasses. I used to cut them back using hedge shears or pruning shears. I purchased a battery powered hedge trimmer with a 2 ft. blade. It would take about 10 seconds to prune each one of the grasses you are working with. Thanks for the informative video. I have no Muhly grass. most of mine are Miscanthus and Pennisetum varieties and the Miscanthus tend to bite back
you are wonderful.. um in N. Carolina I just bought one in september.. and it looks dead should i prune it back now or wait until March?.. i got a good deal on it wouldnt want to ruin it.
dee feran I wouldn’t prune them now. You need to wait now. If you prune them in July they won’t be as pretty in the fall when the pink comes out. It won’t hurt to wait.
That was informative. Wonderful idea to tie them up. Gotta say though, at the halfway point, this video got a little eerie. When u were cutting with the sheers. And the music got a little intense. And u just kept cutting away, very aggressively. Had a bit of a Kathy Bates feel from the movie Misery. But alas, I just bought some of these plants and this was really helpful. Thanks.
Yes. I live in SC and I prune it back in the spring before things start growing. If you want to prune them sooner you can. I don't so that it still blocks the electric box. If you prune it back just as you see the green starting to grow it's fine you can't hurt it. That's why I have it planted by the electric box. If they ever need to cut it to get to the box it'll grow right back. :) Good luck with yours they are really beautiful when they bloom!
I cut mine back in feburary and it still doesnt have any new shoots.Looks the same as when I but it back 2 months ago :( It was thriving.Dont understand what went wrong.
nice job and a nice tip but personally I would use arborvitaes to hide that ugly utility box,and you would never have to look at it again....im just saying.....
It all depends on the variety and here in northern Indiana you should not cut back most of your ornamental grasses until early spring because the dead grass protects the roots from freezing and thawing. Plus the dead grass provides shelter and a place to lay eggs for insects and small rodents.
Thank you. I never would have thought of the garden tape!

Very helpful. Wish I'd seen this sooner. Hoping my pink muhly will flower this fall.

Do you prune it back in spring? I live in Maryland. Thank you.

Electric Clippers straight across is faster, but thanks anyway. Work smarter not harder they say
Thankyouuuuuuuuuuuu
looks like they are being tortured Amazing they grow back at all.
Mew-ly is how it’s pronounced.
We burn our grasses, alot quicker and faster
The easiest way is to burn your grasses in late February, if they’re not right by an electric box! My husband just wads up newspaper to start it up.
Too slow
This is NOT correct. Cut the grasses ALL the way down to the soil level always. Don’t even leave an inch.
