To be perfectly honest, I never listened to Mau5 much, but I'm always going to admire how he makes his sounds. He really is talented in producing and pretty much has all my respect despite me not jammin to his tunes often.
Ok get it. So to put in basic terms. We start off with a sample of a melody in Ableton, then we go to a oscillator in some box hammered to the wall, next he turns nobs on another thing a majig that he claims is a "neet little guy", then all that shit goes trough like 10 fucking mixer channels, ultimately creating the sound that you hear. So there you go a brief overview on what he is doin- oh fuck it I have no idea on, how the fuck did he even know where put the wires for the sequencer.
+WolfyVolume na we don't start with a sample melody, we have midi going out of Ableton into a converter that keeps the clock of the synths, the synths make sounds, sounds go back to ableton and speakers and can be recorded as samples. I think, idk, this is too hard.
actually, he sends midi data/clock data through the kenton and the dark energy, then patches them through the rotating clock dividers, then outputs every first to go of on the z8000, then he patched the cwejman vco 2rm into the mmf-1s, then outpitting the cv into the z8000 matrix sequencer, after that, he patched the afg into the freqeuensteiner, then that into the mx-4s. after, he patched the cloud generator into the 1v/per octave to the dark energy, and the audio out into the qmmg, then the qmmg into the mx-4s. Eventually the MMF-1s goes into the mx4s, which then outputs a stereo signal into the speakers. And thats the patch. :)
The idea that basically everything is literally "static noise" with a lot of filters and modulation of frequency and amplitude amazes me from a technical point of view. Especially the cloud generator. Although I understand how it's done and WHY it works, it's still amazing to experience it in action.

@ThatMannIsMe There are all kinds of modules that do different things. There are oscillators, which generate a waveform. Then there are all sorts of other modules, anything from LFOs, to filters, to frequency modulators and so on. To put it very very simply, a note and a velocity is given to the modular synthesizer, and then out comes the sound. Depending on what's connected to what with patch cables, the sound can be very different. Extremely hard to explain in so few characters.
@djaekemusic he means the patch. its just some oscillators and a cloud generator going thru filters and effects. the cuttoff of the filter is being modulated by a nice little sequencer. and some effects

VCF (Voltage Controlled Filter) - Limits high or low parts of the sound. Like the equalizer on your stereo. Often used to "sweep" the sound making a "wah" or "whoosh" sound.
Cutoff - How much of the high or low frequencies the VCF silences.
Sequencer - Plays notes to the synth over and over again.
