Championship's SHADOW: Best Players to Never Win a World Series

  • Players who never won a World Series in their careers might be a somber topic, but the 10 I will discuss today did not need a championship ring to cement their legacies. The only specifications I have to make this list are that the player has to be retired. Players like Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani will not be on this list, as both still have time to win a title before their respective careers are over.

@@pandahammonds9590 He got a ring though, even if it wasn't an ideal way.
Real reason why he's not in the Hall is because the Jays have been giving the guy crap to no run support throughout his career, cucking him of wins that could have added to the 176 he did get. In 1985 he led the AL in ERA with 2.48 and yet his record was 14-13. Even when they were good for some reason they couldn't score when he was on the mound for them.

Great video. One honorable mention that I think would’ve been a good one that comes to my mind would be Jim Thome. Dude was a beast, got elected to hall of fame, but never got a chip.
Edit: I looked up how many times he made the playoffs. Made it to the playoffs 9 times, his lone chance of winning a chip came in 97 when it was the Marlins and Indians. The same marlins team that took out the giants with Bonds

A potentially interesting follow-up could be one exclusively great players that never played in the postseason to any capacity. There are a few off the top of my head that I think meet that criteria but would have to fact-check myself.

There are a few who played before the divisional era (1969), but since then, it's just about impossible (even Mike Trout made it once). The closest thing to a great player I could find since then is Buddy Bell, a Hall-of-the-Very-Good type guy.

He's the only steroid player I support getting in the hall because (1) he was the single best steroid player of all time by a good amount and (2) he didn't cheat until Bud Selig made it clear he wasn't going to punish anyone for cheating. Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, and the rest of the anabolic steroid guys should never see their plaque in the hall because they cheated before Selig turned his head and pretended like we didn't see McGuire double in size.
Also Selig's plaque shouldn't be in cooperstown. Worst commissioner by far.

I still believe they're going to wait until right after he dies to allow him in. Same with Curt Schilling, but for Curt, it's because they don't want him to have an induction speech that talks about how muslims, gay people, and latinos are destroying America lol. Pete might make a snide remark about how Selig treated him unfairly, but at least Pete's speech would be good.

Bonds is # 1 among position players, and it would have been MORE if it weren't for the 94/95 strike and the 2005 injury season, as well as being in the leadoff position his first four seasons. But Ruth is #1 overall due to combining his pitching statistics. Sort of like how Ohtani lead in WAR during this past season with a 10 WAR because it combined his hitting and pitching. I don't understand how they calculate WAR for pitchers, as I feel it should be called something else, because it's based on different criteria. Ruth was insane though, 7 rings.

I'd put Kenny Lofton towards the top. Lofton played on a ton of playoff teams (which is why he played for so many teams). It's easy to say guys like Barry Bonds or Mike Trout, but they clearly don't have that special quality that adds to a teams' overall competitiveness and maybe belief in themselves to lead a team deep into the playoffs. A guy like Kenny Lofton who would be traded all over the place for borderline playoff teams is more impressive imo.

It's amazing that Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, and Frank Robinson all came out of the Negro Leagues as late teenagers and they all except Banks were able to win a ring in the Major Leagues. Also Larry Doby, Monte Irvin were able to help their team win a ring. What's really wild is that five players who started their MLB careers in their 30's would have been HOFers had they been able to integrate in their early 20's. They are George Crowe, Luke Easter Sam Jethroe, Bob Boyd and Irvin (whose in the hof). These guys were balling in their mid thirties just entering in MLB. Lots of what ifs.

In 1910, Cobb had two hits in a game the official record-keepers erroneously counted twice. This error wasn't discovered until the 1980s, which is why the record Pete Rose was chasing was 4191, even though Cobb really only had 4189 hits. Those two hits account for the one point discrepancy in career batting average.
1910 was the year Cobb and Nap Lajoie were involved in by far the most controversial batting title race in MLB history. It's a great story, if you haven't heard it, look it up.
EDIT: Nap Lajoie, there's another all-time great who never won a World Series.
