- A highly detailed diorama at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum depicts the home of the 401st Bomb Group during WWII. This video explains the layout and functional areas of the base, offering compelling insight into life and activities at a B-17 airfield base. Accompanied by historical and contemporary photographs and maps, narration is provided by Maj. Arthur Seder (ret.) a B-17 pilot who flew 25 missions during the war from this base into Germany and German occupied territories.
Rest in peace all those brave men who never came back... Who paid the ultimate price
Fly high in the sky... Bless you all
And thank you for you're service
And for the freedom which we all enjoy today.❤️💗
What a fabulous film. I live near Deenethorpe, one of many American air bases used in the war. All of them have plaques and commemorations, we have not forgotten the people that came here. Thank you for your service.
Thank you for posting this article. Here in the UK, over the last 20 years I have visited the sites of many USAAF wartime airfields in East Anglia. There are very atmospheric & emotional places which are now mainly farmers fields with very little infrastructure left to remind us of the heroism of those who flew from there save the occasional strip of concrete that was once part of a runway, taxiway or hard stand. Some have museums, other a commemoration stone like Deenethorpe so the sacrifice of those American airmen is not forgotten.
Great video. I was lucky enough to visit this museum in 2003, whilst I was working for the US Army at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah Georgia...lovely place. 6 months later I was working in Schweinfurt Germany once again for the US Army....this location was bombed by the very same 8th Army Air Force......So I saw homelands both before and after the 8th USAAF had completed their mission. Brave men, a lost generation.
Thank you for the excellent documentary and thank you for your service. I'm a 401st 612th grandson.
Great video! I'm from Uppingham, nearby to Deenethorpe, and I've just moved to San Diego, CA. My imagination was always captured by the exploits of the mighty eighth, the men, the machines (big fan of the beautiful B-17). When I was younger my dad used to take me to the airfield and we'd walk the peri track and imagine how the base must have been. The diorama is awesome! Thanks! And thanks to all who served, especially to the heroes who paid the ultimate price.
Just acquired my dad's journals. He was there in 44-45 and flew 26 missions as MO, Mickey Operator, as part of the 615th sq. This helped to put in perspective some of what he described. Thanks for your efforts, back then and now.
Thank you for your narration and recollections. Far more importantly, thank you for the contribution made by you and your comrades in the war against Nazism. You are a true hero.

Christmas 1943 or
1944 I as 5 year old with my elder 10 year old sister and younger
brother walked 5 miles from Corby to a Christmas party at the base.
The party was put on by the US Airforce for all the children from
miles around, there must have been several hundred there. One of the
airman adopted us for the day plied us with delights that we had
never seen in wartime England.
My dad was in the 615th squadron of the 401st. He flew 37 missions, and somehow came back alive.
Great video - Thank you so much for creating & sharing this!
Hi Scotty. LTNS. Yep, once again your artistry has paid off for the cause. Your overlay of Deenethorpe onto the VFR Scenery add-on makes for the best overview of Deenethorpe and the entire field. Good job!
IPMS chapters in Georgia built that diorama. I volunteered to help build some of that but was abit late and they didn't need anymore help. However I wws present on opening day and met so many WWII vets including some real famous one. What an experience it was.
The diorama is a masterful showpiece and a central exhibit when you enter the main hall!
I was a member of IPMS/Atlanta at the time and remember this project well.
My contributions were the P-51, P-47, and the Mosquito.
Have not visited the Museum since my retirement from the National Guard (went to Savannah often while in the Guard).
Thank you. Good man.

That diorama is amazing! Loved the whole description too of the airbase.
Did you do the filming and editing of this with Maj. Seder as narrator? Excellent job whoever did it.
Fascinating. Great video.
I flew a Piper Warrior into Deenethorpe a few years ago. the runway is huge. There was only one in operation. I'll try and get back there and take some video of the approach and landing this December.
Very interesting first hand account.
My grandfather worked as a mechanic @ this air base
My father-in-law, Art Seder who produced and narrated this video, made it clear that it was the ground crew/mechanics, who kept the ships flying and were the unsung heroes of the air war. Without them, the campaign would have been lost. God bless them all!
@@JoeWhistler Well thank' you for keeping the story alive....the name of the base just popped into my mom's head & she had me look it up...My grandfathers name Corbert Harris
If you'd like a taste of life on the base at Deenethorpe, be sure to check out this video...

Amazing model layout. Is it still there to view?
I believe the diorama is in the main hall, next to the static display of the B-17, "Champaign Lady". It is a very impressive museum!
My Uncle Duane (Steve) Brody was stationed there during the war- his jacket had the 614th's devil. we know very little more about his friendships and daily life as he didn't talk much about his time.
Could u tell me
Where the battle field hq is at deenthorpe?
His name was Duane N. Brody- 1922 to 1978 Thank you for checking
@m9078jk3 Maj. Seder produced and narrated this presentation without my help. He did it all in Powerpoint.
Was your uncle born in Philidelphia? I found a service record on aad(dot)archives(dot)gov
Listed name Stephen S Brody
