Howard Cosell, who was not feeling well, did the game and threw up on Don Meredith's cowboy boots. He was MIA for the second half of the game. When I got used to Cosell he came to sound like a rarely changing drone who sometimes would say zany and puzzling things----at least to me and my two younger brothers. I'm not sure we would have realized he was broadcasting this game intoxicated. Meredith was a class act in covering for his falling apart colleague. I do remember the Namath ''interview.'' Hilarious. The NFL blackout rule was suspended for the 2020 season since due to the Covid-19 epidemic, stadiums had small crowds (or in some cases, no fans at all).
The rule was done away with soon thereafter.
Even when sold-out home games could be televised, there were times when a few hone games that didn't sell out would be locally televised, examples being games played in stormy weather conditions, and the "replacement games" during the 1982 players' strike.
In the case of the former, the local team made the decision; in the case of the 1982 "replacement games", it was the league's decision, applying to all teams.

I believe they were only blacked out if the stadium didn't sell out. If the games were sold out the games were televised..... I think.?.? I'm lucky I can remember what I had for lunch but I think I remember it that way. Even then they made some exceptions but look at where we are today. I'm not complaining, I miss the old guard but I like the ability to watch just about every game, every week nowadays.

@@notsosilentmajority1 Well, I know that this game was shown in NY because I remember watching it and thinking "Is Cosell hammered"? I'm not sure when they offered a statement on the reasons for his sudden departure, but I seem to remember one excuse was that a bug flew into his ear and he got vertigo and got sick. 🤮

Yes, I believe all MNF games were shown without blackouts. I think it was only Sunday games that were blacked out locally if the stadiums didn't sell out. That's not a big problem now, even the bad teams sell out regularly.
I don't remember the "bug flew into his ear and vertigo" thing but I'm sure you're right, lol. MNF was definitely a lot of fun to watch back then. It was great when Cosell got mad or got other people mad. He loved using his big vocabulary and sneaky, snide remarks, lol. He was an American icon though.

Howard made his own moonshine. "Monday Night Moonshine."
He'd drink from The Rose Bowl. The Stanley Cup. The Super Bowl. He covered the Whirled Series.
"Don Drysdale. Excellent pitcher. I drank him under the table." "Muhammad Ali. Greatest fighter to ever live. I knocked him out. He lasted 10 rounds."
Cosell was known as the Iron Liver in locker rooms throughout sports. It's all in the book "This is Howard Cosell, and I'm Howard Cosell too."
Howard sold crack from the booth years before crack hit the streets. There are MNF broadcasts where you can hear Howard drop the sports talk to sell product. "This'll knock your socks off. Quality. That's why it costs so much. C'mere. I'll give you a taste."
Shocking but troo. Cosell moved more narcotics than anyone in sports broadcasting, at a time when sports broadcasters moved more product than anyone on the street. He's a legend.
