Tell the NFL that, Even the NBA is getting that during the Playoffs.. it's how you market your shit.. Look at International Soccer! Look at the numbers it pull worldly!
@@kenrickkahn Exactly Soccer pulls world wide. Wrestling never had an audience even close to soccer in Europe or South America which is pretty logical. Kids cant become a wrestler if they want. But kids can become a soccer player in a junior team. Such amateur level soccer teams are in nearly every small town or village so even without televison or the internet its easy to get a first contact with it. Same thing will never happen with wrestling. There isnt a single community which thinks about getting a wrestling ring for their citizens but having a (partly) community owned sports field is really trivial (in europe). Beeing a fan of a soccer club (and maybe other sports too) isnt comparable to having a favorite wrestler or beeing a fan of a wrestling promotion.
@@ltheisen3327 the only way for wrestling to be even a inch feasible to kids is for a wrestling promotion to just go all out on being broadcasted on youtube or streaming services, because tv ratings in general have been getting smaller and smaller every year since 2010. for pushing kids to become wrestler though, there would have to do the territory system governed by a state body just so big wrestling companies dont suck out the talent pool from small promotions and thus folding afterwards. WWE has no secure talent pipeline and when they did made their own feeder promotions, they disbanded them with only a crappy documentary to pay tribute to a single crop of talent
It’s not like they were selling out arenas before the pandemic. WWE has 50 million subs yet their videos rarely reach 1 million views. Pro wrestling is done, its over.
plenty of good points raised. i also feel wrestling's best days are well in the past, and that there won't be any more "cycle" where the popularity surges back up to hogan era or attitude era level. i could very well be wrong, but the media market has exploded in the last 10 years, to the point that there's a niche for everyone. and for pro wrestling, that niche is almost entirely inhabited by either the children of old fans, or old fans looking desperately for something to talk or critique about. The industry may be able to get by this way for a while, but to experience a resurgence? No. I can't see it. the environment is too different.
Jim made a good point about the millions of people that used to watch during the Monday Night Wars that long stopped looking into wrestling. It was weird at first when I stopped watching WWE. I had been a fan for years and wrestling was something I was very into but I realized more and more that I was annoyed by what I was watching so I eventually stopped. It was like ending a relationship where you realize that the person you loved has been treating you like crap for years and that your feelings are for who they were, not who they turned into. I am still a wrestling fan so I've kept up in a very broad sense to see if things turn around or new promotions come up. But most people don't do that. For other things I was interested in that I got turned off of from things moving in a direction I didn't like, they probably had two years at the most to get me back. Eventually it just went off my radar. So the last time to get the lapsed fans back was like 2004 or 05. TNA's launch in 2002 was specifically to try to win those fans back and that was the right time but they blew it and the weekly PPV concept kept people from trying them out. To get those fans back you need another wrestling boom like we had with Hogan and later Austin. If wrestling becomes cool again then the average person can't ignore it. The old fans may come back, provided it isn't something that only appeals to young people, and a new generation of fans will get into wrestling. To do that you need good booking with a big charismatic star. Those stars don't appear very often but you have to make sure that your promotion is doing things competently enough that he can make full use of his talents and be the star he's capable of being. That is intentionally not occurring in the WWE. AEW has the best chance but if such a figure ends up on their roster they have to not screw up his push.
I remember that Howard Stern interview. I liked Howard's reaction when he found out Golddust is Dusty Rhodes son. Artie needed to shut up though. I like Artie but he wasnt funny here
You can disagree w/ Jim and call him conservative, narrow-minded etc.. about wrestling, but he is *SPOT ON* about the fans having left wrestling a long time ago. Very accurate analysis 💯

I love this so much. Imagine a year ago when AEW said we're gonna change the World yet nobody outside the Wrestling Bubble knows who they are but know who WWE is.
Barely - everyone who's the WWF and can name drop anyone from Hogan to Randy Savage. WWE though? Vast majority of casuals couldnt name two of them as most gave up when it killed the sport being all PG Entertainment with scripts. The last legacy fans had was the Taker streak and they killed that too - WWE killed the sport, no coming back for it now to heady WWF days with mass market appeal. It's all UFC now and perhaps unsurprisingly WWE has panicked and keep trying to sign UFC talent to try and coach back fans but it's not working, the sport is too far gone and even the deluded who argue otherwise keep name dropping WWE whilst reference the long gone eras - nobody is gonna look back and remember the modern era be that Impact, AEW, WWE or anyone else outside the 'bubble' which shrinks monthly.
Corny would be great, but Stern just doesn't accommodate to or do any research for such guests. Every time he interviews a wrestler, it's obvious he didn't read any book, or anything about the guest. But for others, his interviews are fantastic. But it's clear that he just doesn't like wrestling, because none of those interviews were ever any good. Except the Goldust one, but that was all Goldust being fucking hilarious.
Batista is a legit star now. Lesnar too an extent is but come on without WWE no one would have known him. Also he was popular when wrestling was popular.

Honestly, that segment would have been perfectly fine if he was fighting in like an old fashion fighting pit. I have a dirt circle in mind. Dunno if that really conveys exactly what I mean, but just that change and it would have been fine. Having a wrestling ring in a field like that looked carny and stupid.

@ShadowAngel stern dominated for decades and was a major force behind the successful launch of Sirius XM radio. Yes, he's old and yes his show isn't what it was but the man is a legend
Hell, here in the UK, I knew people who had never heard of The Rock until he became a big Hollywood star. Only diehard wrestling fans here know who John Cena is, let alone anybody on the AEW roster. Also never fails to amuse me that over here, Impact Wrestling airs on Fridays at anywhere between 11pm-2am and still pulls in more ratings/viewers than both WWE and AEW. Impact (and TNA before it) has been the king of wrestling according to UK TV audiences since 2008, by a large margin.
Pro wrestling is basically a niche subculture in this day and age. Even the market in America (the biggest market for pro wrestling), something like ~2 million people in total (rounding down) a week catch wrestling on network TV. The 'product' is not putting asses in seats anymore
Speaking of the UK what is up with all these wrestling channels being British guys? Channels like Cultaholic, Whatculture, Wrestlelamia, etc. They seem to always have that accent.
I listened to Stern in the late 90s early 2000s when he was still on regular radio. Back then he was still funny he used to relentlessly mock Hollywood and it was always funny the way he got around the FCC rules. I think going to satellite radio was the beginning of his undoing. Because then he didn't have to be inventive anymore. No he's just sold out to the SJWs
Stern has not been funny since Jackie left. He used to make fun of Don Imus, and became a total parody of Imus. I used to be a Stern fan but seriously..he is completely irrelevant now.
I listened to Stern from 83 to 2001. The show was a shell of it's former self by the time I quit. Repetitive and boring. Then at some point Stern personally morphed into what he always railed against. He's a big phoney & a hypocrite.
I listen to stern regularly. Robin was joking. They arent sitting there having a serious conversation about wrestling. They dont care what organization it is, they dont care and they dont need to.
Very true. Rosie Ellen Jennifer Aniston he kisses their ass now. Some of the funniest shit was him ragging on them. He loved trump and had great interviews. Now all he does is talk crap about him.
Being a listener to the Stern show for the past 20 years, there is no doubt in my mind that Robin mixed up AEW with that icp juggalo wrestling shit, which literally is backyard wrestling. They had ICP on the show a few times where it was brought up
I cant believe that jim actually got upset when he found out that some casual non fan called aew backyard wrestling. I loved it cuz he was almost gonna defend aew but then realized that there is nothing to defend cuz aew dug their own grave in this case. It is impossible for a non viewer to think that a promotion is backyard wrestling unless the promotion has done some stuff to make that impression. And aew have done a lot of things to give the impression that they are "backyard wrestling" and the problem is these things get more viral on the internet than the jericho/cody rivalry or cody/mjf rivalry which is what AEW should be striving to be known for. I feel sad
100% agreed. AEW has made a mess and aren't even self aware enough to realize it. They seem to be mixing up being a meme and being legitimately popular. They have their core audience of "smart" fans who buy into the "Oh, wrestling is art. Let them express their art" and that's it. Anyone else who watches is watching cause they heard about this hilarious new wrestling show where that guy who used to be cool in the Hardy Boyz is teleporting and hallucinating Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King in the crowd while speaking in a "funny" voice or an alcoholic cowboy is chasing a guy through a football field on horseback and wanna see for themselves so they can laugh at it. Or this small guy or this guy in denim who doesn't try in his matches. "Oh he's a hoot" I'm sure they say. Unfortunately, it really was always bound to become this, considering three of the four in charge have been confusing their memehood with being truly over for years now. I'm sad too.
I've got news for Mr.Cornette, before Vince unleashed Bastion Booger and The Gobbledegooker on us, I thought The Scaffold match was the dumbest thing I had ever seen in Pro Wrestling! I knew the match would stink because everybody would be too worried about falling to wrestle and sure enough, one of my favorite "bad guy" managers fell and blew out both knees! So, no, I don't normally like too much stupid crap in my wrestling; but The Inner Circle v The Elite stadium brawl was a welcome exception to the rule! Adam Page riding to the rescue reminded me of John Wayne in True Grit, guns blazing with his horse's reins in his teeth! It was a hoot, especially in quarantine!

Leg slaps imo is not what killed wwe. Shoving Roman Reigns as the top guy for 4 years when the fans were clearly rejected him is what has led wwe to this point. The last interesting wwe character that was a character more than a wrestler is Bray Wyatt and imo they ruined him having him fed to cena at mania 30.
lol, there’s no doubt she was just trying to be funny when she said it was backyard wrestling. She doesn’t know or care. And it’s turned into this 15 minute conversation.
"Like the WWE coz that's all they've known of wrestling for 20 years. But it sucks! There's an abusive relationship, there, we don't wanna end it coz we really like wrestling but goddammit this program hadn't been good in a while" #FACTS 👆👆👆👆👆
Let me tell you a fun fact.. wwe gets around 2m viewers whereas AEW gets around 1m viewers which doesn't seem that big of a deal . But in reality its just USA market... But when it comes to Global market WWE does 20 times more than AEW. for example I am from India and in India WWE draws around 4-5 m viewers on TV and nobody knows about AEW😅
I honestly hope that when they can get people back in the studio the new NWA gets back to it. They have some comedy, but on the whole, they do it more seriously and I keep hearing rumors they're making moves to work with ROH and NJPW more. I truly think with enough exposure they could do very well!
Corny doesn't hate AEW or bashes it,he just calls what he sees. He's said it numerous times if people would actually listen for once. Even said AEW is Wresting's last hope to be good again in his interview with FTR.
He just critiques it. Same way AEW fan boys do WWE. Hardcores always think that their opinion is fact and if you bash what they love, you're a hater. Not how criticism works
Anybody here remember years ago seeing an episode of the Howard Stern Show where he said growing up he was a big fan of Dusty Rhoads? I seem to recall the episode even had black and white photos of Dusty when he wrestled in the 70s and 80s. That's all I keep getting reminded when I heard him say these things about Dustin. It's like HELLO Howard that's your favorite wrestler Dusty Rhodes' son Dustin aka Goldust! So he sounds like a hypocrite when he tries to say he never saw wrestling before he met Goldust. Wow what a contradiction.
Off topic. I recently watched your video of you re-watching Vader vs Shawn Michaels... Then went back and watched the March for myself. I ABSOLUTELY love your honesty and they way you describe matches. I feel like I do not need to watch some matches as long as you have explained it for me. Love ya Corney!!
Crazy to imagine where pro wrestling is going to be in the next 20 years. It may take a turn and go back to basics that once made it worth watching, or it may go to shits and get burned down to hardly any fans being invested into it It'll be a long, long time before we see something revolutionary happening to pro wrestling. There was AEW being brought up, having a million viewership on their first show, and now the hype and joy to see something overtake and give WWE a run for its money is going from being a reality to a dream not coming true.
Might take a decade, but AEW can overtake WWE in the ratings due to the letters shrinking ratings, currently RAW pulls just around a million more than AEW.
This is pathetic. They clearly State they don't listen to Howard Stern. Howard Stern does not know about anything going on outside of the bachelor or what his friends in the Hamptons are doing. They are out of touch on everything right now. Why do you think they're referencing an obscure to Rhett's gimmick from over a decade ago. They literally talk about nothing on Howard Stern anymore. Robin Quivers said what she said in sarcasm as well
Once wrestling loses television including cable then it has a chance to go back to its roots and grow again if not wrestling will go the way of the dinosaurs.
If cable loses wrestling, then that's a wrap for wrestling. It will not grow being shown on streaming or youtube. When it gets further from where the masses can access it, it'll die.
A main reason DX, for instance, could do skits - aside from charisma - is that one could tell the main members were really bullies (which research would back up) - and part of the interest was to see what they could legitimately get away with. **It wasn't comedy skits getting ratings**
I never really saw the stuff Shawn and Triple H did in '97 as comedy skits. I saw it more as ego/power trips because it was clear Shawn could do whatever he wanted and get away with it so essentially he brought that on tv. Kind of funny because I think Shawn and Triple H bought their own hype and thought they were legitimately funny. Uh, NO! I agree with what you said. The interest was in them being bullies and seeing what they could get away with pushing the envelope on what they were allowed to do. It's a shame those two dumbasses to this day don't seem to realize that and is also why every version of DX sucked after that initial version.
I do agree with you that today's wrestling is trash however if you think about it wrestling was much more popular back in the day but there was also dramatically lesser options
“It’s silly and fake and they’re all small children” wow Cornette spoke truth. Loved the Rock’in Wrestling period as a kid, stayed for the new generation because we still had big stars in their prime. Absolutely loved the attitude era as a teenager. I stopped watching early 2002 and didn’t watch until winter Jan 2017. It’s nothing how it used to be. I had high hopes for AEW but it’s all the same. Wrestling was better in the mid 90’s than it is today and that’s sad. The wrestlers today may be better workers in ring, with all that athleticism but the product still sucks. I can’t get pumped about watching Marko Stunt do anything on my tv.
Personally I agree with everything...but I can only watch AEW now...I don’t really care about drama or storylines I watch AEW cause they put on good matches...I watch it more for the sport than the entertainment

I stopped when it became pg rated... Nothing can beat 90s to mid 2000s wrestling...I stop after ecw/wwe one night stand 2005 or 2006...

Pro wrestling is basically a niche subculture in this day and age. Even the market in America (the biggest market for pro wrestling), something like ~2 million people in total (rounding down) a week catch wrestling on network TV. The 'product' is not putting asses in seats anymore
