Homeless camps move around. Drug addiction is always going to be there. But you're right she's giving it a shot. At least maybe it won't be as bad as it was let's pray
That’s crazy! Where they all went because there was so many of them and now their is hardly anyone. Imagine living around there and u can’t even go downstairs to the store without seeing all of that, it’s scary.
Al’s Toggery was a men’s clothing store, Father and Sons was a shoe store. Kresge’s and Woolworth’s were 2 different stores known as ‘5&10’ stores. The original name of Four Sons pizza was indeed Father and Sons until the dad died and the four sons continued the business and changed the name (another outlet was down on Front Street).

I went to Pharmacy school in West Philly before I went on to get my Master's and PhD. in Chemical Engineering and I have never seen Philly so clean. I remember what it was right before the huge cleanup. I remember when I would visit friends that lived down there and people would run up to your car and you had to keep your windows up or someone would throw something in and then say you owed them money. Scary times. I believe you were talking about those times. I had a couple friends who were undercover cops back then . They were scarier than anyone I could think of....lol
Where are the people? My belief is that poverty and addiction just migrates to another area. So let’s make bets if they move to west Philly or Mayfair.
But its pushed the addicted deeper into the neighborhood...my street has a large corner property and they been trying to set up a tent and campfire for a week prior to cleanup Me and my man and neighbors wont allow it and keep chasing them
I'm glad Rainbow finally closed. I can't see how they could be profitable in those conditions, addicts out front and what I can only assume was a large amount of theft. As a fellow retail worker, I can't imagine what it was like to work at that location
The final nail in the coffin for that Rainbow....last year a crackhead lit a fire INSIDE the store in an effort to distract staff so she could shoplift. Yes. Rainbow said enough.
I think the next step is when we see some sort of festival in that very area. I'm not talking about that Derby thingy. I mean something in this exact spot with craft vendors and music and food trucks and such.
Until the people get clean, they're always gonna follow the path of least resistance. The city needs to focus on the problem before Kensington becoming nice leads to another neighborhood becoming the new Kensington.
I'm confused, when they did the clean up during winter the authorities said there were 5,5000 homeless in the Kensington area, so where have they disappeared them to?? Summer is here, all it takes is one 90 degree in the shade type weather and they will all return!!!! These people are down and out, they will return to what they know and the drug dealers know this. 🙏 Prayers for your city and the families that have to deal with this on a daily basis.
Thanks for the update. I'll keep praying for mayor parker and her administration. She's showing signs that she'll end up being one of the very best mayors Philly has ever had. And I agree about Kenney. Who has to be the worst mayor Philadelphia has ever had. That man has much blood on his hands. Thanks for giving us some of the history of Kensington, from way back. God bless. Stay safe.

Al's Toggery shop was a clothing store back in the day. Used to get all of my school clothes there. I graduated high school in 91 and I remember him telling my mom and I it was his last year as things were getting to be too much for him.
Used to be in Philly all the time for concerts, comedy show, and to just be in the city but I haven't been back in years and probably wont be back anytime soon. Its not like I live far away I'm right over the bridge in south jersey
Kensington is apart of a bad part of my life that I’m way past but I always wanted to know how a place could get so bad. And what it was like before. I seriously appreciate your insight!
In New York City they took abandoned buildings and fixed them up and made them shelters for homeless people with the Department of Homeless Police on duty there 24 hours a day, so they can feel safe.
I remember back in the mid 80s Xmas decorations were all along Kensington Ave including Lehigh Ave. Plus do you remember gears feed store around k&A or gaybricks stable Lehigh & airamingo in the old coal yard behind the Penn jersey auto parts store

It wasn't Levits furniture in Kensington. 3:55 It was Levin's furniture and appliances just down Kensington from K & A. You could also buy a Kensington row house then for about $5K or $6K, $10K tops. Now Kensington looks like its booming. The stores that aren't boarded up have their steel gates locked. You know things are really dismal when even the bars close down. 15:43 It looks slightly less dirty, but its still Filthydelphia.
Is this progress, though, or has the problem just been moved to another location? Interesting video but it's so odd seeing those areas without the usual inhabitants.
So glad I’m long gone. Rode thru K&A on the bus 10x a week for 7 years. Sometimes had to bicycle when SEPTA was on strike at midnight. Saw people O.D. on the bus, one guy wanking off on front seat bright sunshine morning til cops drug him off, one guy punched out k.o cold, bullet shot into bus, had to transfer to next bus, one bus driver just pulled over, stopped, refused to go on, apologized, continued on, bus driver alerted me dude who already had one bike was stealing my bike , I just wrestled it off him cursing, he was like 15, I put it back on the front of the bus, continued going to work, bear spray went off on my leg accidentally, bus driver said nothing, I could go on.
What they failed to mention is that they have already sold the majority of those properties and that construction is about to begin 🧐..The rules of being able to get 5 to 10 years free from taxes... They didn't explain that though 😮😮 Developers have already spent their money

The pizza place was called Four Sons. At least in the 80s and 90s it was.
