Why would Roki want to spend six prime years of his career signing with a losing franchise who will only be on a downward trajectory in the coming years? San Diego could have been an elite franchise destination for Roki, but that pipe dream died and the window closed this past season, thanks to 24 scoreless innings.
All logic indicates Roki will sign with the Dodgers.

@@Son-ke9fp imagine Roki watching the playoffs in Japan and watching the dodgers vs padres. One team is led by MVPs like Shohei, Mookie, and Freddie and the other is led by clowns like Machado, ped boy, and Profar. Which team would he want to go to ? The team that his entire country man roots for or the team that celebrates like the won the whole thing when they’ve only won two games.

He also doesn't have to succeed from day one as a Dodger because he won't be anything but a #5 or #6 starter. I love when you guys try to change the Narrative of something you didn't understand to begin with.

It's been said that Roki prefers a smaller market because he was turned off by Japanese media. The Padres and Dodgers probably have met with him, they just kept it in secrecy under the radar to respect his privacy. If this is the case, the Padres would be favored, but no one ever really knows.
If they really haven't met, then it's likely because he's favored these two teams and moved them to what has been talked about being round two which is supposedly after the New Year. Round 1 was likely just the teams he might consider if they had a strong pitch and offered him something that might entice him from Padres/Dodgers.

What the angels did not do with Shohei is what may hurt the padres. Which was winning, and wasted his years, just like Trout.

I wouldn't count SD as a "losing" team to be on. They still have Tatis, Machado, Merrill, (hopefully keeping) Arraez and Salas and De Vries on the way. The starting rotation and possible Cease trade is what brings a few questions marks but they'll still be competitive

Because it was down to those two options from the beginning. He's allowing any other credible option to present their case. He's going to rule them out as he goes.
It will then be those 2 plus any other teams that are deemed credible options.

Sasaki knows him going to the Dodgers on a cheap contract significantly improves their chances of winning multiples championship. I would imagine helping Shohei win would improve his image in Japan.

The Yankees have been scouting him for years. So, has the Dodgers. Because he will only be making very little with his salary, which means his agent, Joel Wolfe, will advise him to sign with a team that can give him more leverage than others. As the only Japanese star with the Yankees, it would be a marketing leverage. He increases his value eventually. In endorsements and sponsorships, it's financial gold. His hero, Tanaka played for the Yankees, so he practically rooted for them as a youngster. If I had to narrow it down, it will be between the 1. Yankees, 2. Padres, 3. Dodgers
If he chooses the Dodgers, he will be playing 3rd fiddle with Shohei and Yoshi there, therefore, he will have to compete for endorsements and sponsorships. It is more financially wise to go to the Yankees.

Yankees and their fanbase don't have a good reputation in Japan, so I would be surprised if Sasaki would choose the Yankees.
Tanaka Masahiro said to the Japanese press years ago that his family experienced a lot of racism in NYC, so I highly doubt he would be recommending a NY team. But if Sasaki were to prefer a NY team, the Mets would have a higher chance due to their reputation for pitcher development as well as having Senga. Yankees have nobody who can help Sasaki in transitioning to MLB.

Why choose the Padres knowing they cant or wont pay you when the time comes. You would have to play for another team when you are eligible. If you choose the Dodgers and West coast is a factor, you will essentially be their for life or the majority of your career. Japanese Kershaw. One team, legend. Padres would be short term. If you go back east you have Yankees & Mets will pay to keep you, even the red Sox have shown unwillingness to pay up. Why risk your legacy on a team that may not pay you when you deserve it.
