- Are you wondering whether you should be making the switch to Lithium batteries onboard your boat?
The technology behind Lithium batteries has come on leaps and bounds in recent years, and more and more people are seeing the benefits and making the switch to a hybrid solution or even a fully Lithium solution. But how do you do it safely, and what other factors do you need consider?
This webinar aims to bust the myths that are out there. We have brought together a panel of experts to help separate fact from fiction and provide trustworthy information in plain English.
Our experts include:
1) Paul Bailey - Technical Director at Marine Energy Systems
2) Ben Sutcliffe-Davies - Renowned Marine Surveyor
3) Dr Peter Mansi - Leading Fire Expert
We start by explain the chemistries behind the various types of lithium batteries. For boat system batteries, Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are used, which differ in their properties and safety characteristics from other lithium batteries. For other applications such as foldable e-bikes and e-scooters, as well as personal propulsion toys, a different, and far more unstable form of lithium-ion battery is used, which can be the cause of fires on board boats, or indeed on dry land.
Having established the basics, Paul Bailey takes the audience on a whistlestop tour of how lithium-ion batteries can be incorporated into your boat system, including what needs changing in your current set up to achieve the full spectrum of benefits that lithium-ion batteries offer.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to our panelists directly (contact details are towards the end of the webinar).
A bit about your host, Haven Knox-Johnston.
HK-J's webinars are fast getting a reputation within the boating community for the interesting and useful topics that they cover. In their day jobs, the crew from HKJ provide boat insurance for all manner of boats, and, along with sister companies HK-J Commercial and HK-J Specialist, can now offer solutions for marine trade insurance and specialist insurance (for those who are doing something incredible like sailing across the Atlantic!). This is a must watch if you use Lithium batteries, which is pretty much all of us. There are q number of things you can do and selections you can make to help manage the hazards. When they fail...they fail very quickly. Manage the dangers whenever you can. We don't even think about these things but even the cheapest, small device can ruing our lives. No need to watch if you don't have when in your home...but for the rest of the 99% of us...watch and learn. This vid is not designed to convince you to avoid at all cost. It just talks about what dangers there are and how to limit your exposure.
Thanks for your comment. We certainly learnt an awful lot whilst putting the webinar together. Knowledge which can be applied both at home and on the boat, in fact - to every day life in general. It's really interesting to understand the different chemistries that are used in the batteries too, and how the different types of lithium battery have different performance and safety parameters. We've all now purchased charging bags and got rid of broken charging cables!
Very helpful impulses regarding energy on board in general. I missed distinction between needs for blue water sailing and coastal sailing. E.g. load dumps are much more serious when you are 1000 miles off a coast. Also external vs. internal BMS is a topic here.
Thank you. If you have any further questions, do contact Paul at Marine Energy Systems (info@marineenergysystems.co.uk) and I'm sure he'll be happy to help.
