God bless you and your work, Lin.

Wow! I never thought of it like that!
Everything he does is a reference.

Lin managed to list 78 cities in a song and not have it even sound any bit unusual. This man is legendary
i can now learn this song for a test lol thanks lin
Yep
Well, isn't that implied when anyone says his name?
Towns not cities lol
Camelia Vilá 😂
The fact that the lyrics are mostly town names makes me see how magical puerto rican and most latino/spanish town names can sound.
Nana Fun Fact, did you know that many of the names you hear in this song are from the natives that lived in the Island before the Spanish colonization? Jayuya, Guaynabo, Cayey... most were names of the caciques or leaders from different groups that used to live in those places. Words from the vocabulary of taínos are still used in Puerto Rico. For giving you an example, the word ‘juracán’, gave oringin to the official term ‘huracán’ (hurricane) in Spanish.
@@krystaldelmar2797 good history lesson boricua 👍
Krystal Del Mar awesome explanation of my beautiful island boriken
And boriken is the native name of Puerto Rico I love calling it boriken like my old ancestors used to call it
Good to know! I tried to understand some of the lyrics with my very limited school spanish but was very frustrated that I had no clue what they were talking about... I thought I couldn't be that bad, but if those are town names that makes a lot of sense ^^;
What makes this song even more incredible, Miranda obviously made this song as a tribute to Puerto rico but on this song he features singers from Cuba, Venezuela, Panama & Dominican Republic as well as Puerto Rico. Latinos stand UP!
Latinos el mundo entero!!!!
Blood latinos united 💘
Yees
YASSSSSSSS WERE MY BORICUAS AT?!
But puertoricans are the best 😋🤩
Puerto rico will rebuild and prevail. Still one of the most beautiful islands in the caribbean with its humble people. 💘
latinoheatariel So true, much love for that beautiful Island

Thank you for your comment. This comes from a puertorrican :)
I live in PR (Puerto Rico) but... A hurricane passed and destroyed everything. God help us and bless you all.
Thank you! You are so kind!
Lin-Manuel Miranda is truly a modern bard, one of the greatest musicians of our time, and such a wonderful person with a big heart. My knowledge of Spanish is elementary school level, so I don't understand most of the lyrics, but still, this was great. The spirit of the song transcends the language barrier.
And, as a musical theater geek, I love how the song started with a few lines of "Maria" from "West Side Story"; the minute I saw the title, I had a feeling that's where the song would go and it didn't disappoint. Bravo, Lin, and everyone else involved.
P.S. Would anyone else LOVE to hear Lin sing the role of Tony, or at the very least record songs from "West Side Story" on an album? I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
TheaterRaven Most of the lyrics is basically saying the different pueblos (towns?) of Puerto Rico
100% agreed
The lyrics of this videos are literally just the different regions of Puerto Rico. I'm not too impressed, I thought a "lyricist" like him could come up with a more heartfelt message than just naming stuff...
If you watch the interview where he explains the genesis of the idea that is based on a commonality shared by Puerto Ricans, the song will then make perfect sense. Singing the 78 municipalities that compose the islands is the unity that he was looking for. The song succeeds on its simplicity and inclusion.
Oh, cool. Thanks for the info. I'll check it out.
when he said 'San Sebastián' i lost it and i got so excited and felt so proud bc that's where my family is from, and i've never heard anyone acknowledge San Sebastián in a song before
alyssa didn’t know there city’s with my name
I got the same when he said San Lorenzo 💛
Mine too ☺️ same feeling
I felt the same when he said Manati im from that part
@Steamed Hams Caguas!!!
I am 100% NOT Puerto Rican. But, listening to this song paralyzed me. I was NOT here to cry, but reading some of these comments is just heartbreaking and mind blowing. I hear this song and think of all of the people that suffered in the disaster, with their children and loved ones.
I look at my mom because she was born in 1972 and was only 3 when the Lebanese Civil War broke out. Her family was wealthy and got our. But what if they hadn’t been? What would’ve happened? I ask her, how come you’re not scared of loud noises? I imagine her saying, I’m used to the sound of bombs, the sight of blood, but loosing my mother was the hardest thing.
I never saw my mother break down like that. This song helps me understand the many many many etc. people that were affected. I really don’t know what to say. Thank you? Bless you? I love you.
I'm 100% and I can assure you the hurricane was devastating! I was scared to death during it. The next day we went to see if my grandparents were okay but the road was too destroyed to get there, my mom broke down crying. I didn't have electricity for about 5 months. Tough I can assure you, I live in a neighborhood and I have a few friends here, trust me all that time created great bonds and friendship, now I have my neighborhood best friend who is always here for me. Things like these can really bring people together and I can assure it as I have experienced it myself. Arriba Puerto Rico 💖
God bless you

OH MY GOD LIN IS AN ACTUAL GENIUS. THE FIRST OPENING LINES ARE FROM WEST SIDE STORY, A MUSICAL FEATURING MANY PUERTO RICAN ACTORS AND ITS FROM A SONG CALLED 'MARIA'
I CAN'T COMPREHEND HOW GENIUS THIS IS
And Rita Moreno was there signing too! She plays Anita in West Side story...
He also included a cast member who is puerto rican named Rita Moreno and I love how all these latinos came together for this song and dang Gina got them bars

Hope they take advantage of all the tools education, etc...
For everyone who is commenting that they do not know what the song lyrics are about: A majority of the lyrics are city and town names in Puerto Rico. For example, my grandad currently lives in Aguadilla. My bloodline is rooted in Rincón, Ponce, and San Juan. These are all recited in the song. Anything else was an ad lib or declaring of love for their island. Thank you for showing your support despite the language barrier.
ashleyneedstogeta Aguada... ¡Presente!
Lin Manuel also sampled the lyrics from "Maria" - West Side Story, which I thought was amazing
Thank you for explaining, I appreciated the song (and the cause) before I knew what the lyrics were, and I love it even more now.
Yes, the way it's worked in is beautiful
ashleyneedstogeta That last part of your comment is so beautiful. Rather than insulting the ignorant for not knowing, you thanked them for sticking around despite their lack of understanding. So grateful someone like you exists!
This isn't a contest of fan base for a specific artist. This is about all these great artist coming together for a great song and an even greater cause! Estamos contigo Puerto Rico🇵🇷
dale!!!! :) se levanta!!!
I think I’m gonna call this A Community Effort.
(As “it should be,” according to a certain loser.)
the fact that latino artists that aren’t puerto rican like camila was on this shows how when there is a problem like this in the latino community for one country any latino speaks on it. i’m 4th generation puerto rican and this really meant something to me and my family especially my family in puerto rico who were affected
Same honestly it’s heartbreaking that it’s STILL going through all of this to think that some of my friends that are still there stuck because of corona and because of the poverty that’s still going on and some of my family is also stuck there vive mi Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Awe I’m praying for you and your family🥺💕
I think was to show how no matter where your from in Latin America, Latinos can come together especially in times of need. It shows that everyone cares. I can see where your coming from but most would see this as Latinos coming together and advocating for one another
oh im sorry that happened
I'm Puerto Rican but I have never been to Puerto Rico. I love listening to these songs, it gives me hope that I may be able to visit Puerto Rico one day.
Edit: To the people who live on the island, or know someone who does, my prayers go out to you and your families during this Hurricane season. Stay safe everyone, and know that you are not alone❤❤
I'm not Puerto Rican but I've been there and its beautiful. I wish I could've stayed, theres nothing like it.
I went with my boyfriend (he was born and raised in PR) to meet his family on the island. It was BEAUTIFUL. I would go back in a heartbeat.
I was there when I was younger my Dad took me too my grandfather land and family to meet all my cousins and uncles and I was going for 2 weeks and I wanted to stay the whole summer and love it ! I visited there when I was younger again teenager with a friend yabucoa ! I stood only in Rio pierda with family but to young and my uncles was a little strick didn’t travel to many places because couldn’t but I got older and went back to see a friend and stood in Yabucoa
@@madelinebigio7565 That's amazing!
I'm from DC. Went to Puerto Rico on a cruise and had an experience I've never forgotten that can only happen when you're around truly wonderful people.
I had a clear bag with my wallet, phone, tissues and a book. I left the ship, looked around a bit, bought some things, needed medicine so I went into the CVS across from the ship. The lady who was the cashier was so nice to me and we chatted a bit as I tried to speak in Spanish. Afterward, I got distracted and realized I needed to get back to the ship. *I got all the way back to my room and realized I didn't have my bag!!!* Again, inside was my wallet (with all credit cards & my cash), and my cell phone. I ran at top speed off the ship, down the long gangway, across the street and into the CVS. As I rushed in out of breath, looked around and saw the cashier. *She smiled at me and held up my bag!* I was so grateful!!! I tried to bless her with some money but she wouldn't take it. She just was glad I was okay. *THAT is what I think of when I think of Puerto Rico. The love and kindness of the people.* 🥰🥰🥰

I am in it in 2020!
July 2020
2021 actually. But it's still almost like praying.
@@arctic_haze Agreed!
I'm here today August 15, 2024 a day after hurricane Ernesto and it feels like transporting back to María hearing the electric generators and people not being able to leave their home bc of fallen trees and flooded streets.
I am definitely not Puerto Rican or any sort of latin but omfg I loved this song and the emotions and the beautiful voices. I've listened to it so many times I love it
a lot of special talent has come from this small island
Including Alexander Hamilton !
Mary Newton The actual Alexander Hamilton didn't come from PR.
Mary Newton, Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis. :I
EJ / Ramsay - I stand corrected , Yes he came from Nevis , about 200 miles SE of Puerto Rico .
Maybe he traveled Through Puerto Rico on his way to New York City ? ; - )
We owe A LOT to Puerto Rico!
I cried the first time I heard this song. They are all so talented and it's for such a good cause! ❤❤❤
So true! Jeez, this song is amazing.

The coquis got to me tbh. I’ve been living in the States for about 3 months now. I really miss their beautiful singing.
R Picifica it that hetalia
Marygrace Pelekamoyo Yes
5 years later and I still get teary eyed to this. I don’t know if it’s because I’m an immigrant and never got to experience my land full force because of war, but seeing people come together like this moves me to my core.
Two years late and this song is still true. We have to do something. Save Puerto Rico!! Its worth it! They are people. They need help. If the government won't do anything, we have to be the ones to make the change.
This song gets better and better every time I hear it.
Yes weap
Ikr 😤❤
Shame on all the people who clicked dislike. The proceeds from this song go to the people of Puerto Rico who are suffering. This song was made for humanities sake and the people's lives who can still be saved there. No need to hate or dislike.
YES
The song has no inspirational message
Xtriker1 So? It doesn't need to have an inspiring message to inspire a sense of hope with the names of the nations or what the song is doing behind the scenes. In my opinion you really just aren't seeing the big picture here, that's disappointing.
I mean I get that they were trying to send a msg etc but . . . meh . . .I see it like a normal song. In my opinion all those people could have done something . . .better. I like 'Isla Bendita' better
Xtriker1 I mean I see your point and you have your own view and I respect that. I also like you 'isla bendita'.
The fact that I’m Puertorican and I love this song makes me happy btw ALL LATINOS STAND UP!!!
P.R For Ever 🇵🇷
When you can only understand the worlds~
*"It's almost like praying"*
*"Puerto Rico"*
But you still love the song 😂💞
He’s naming every city in Puerto Rico, so it’s not necessarily in Spanish, it’s just the names like “San Lorenzo y San German, mi viejo San Juan” there’s not that many Spanish, just names
The artists, the rhythm, the passion...ahh everything about this song is just incredible!
I got chills and teary eyed! Especially hearing the name of my town 'Santa Isabel'. I loved it!
Adalice Burgos I know, it's crazy! I was raised on the main land but born on the island and it still hit me hard when my birth town was mentioned like a soldier in attention readying itself for the task at hand. It can't be helped. It touches our heart in a special way.
I know! I cried when I heard "Humacao!" but a bit disappointed it wasn't Rita Moreno, as she's from Humacao. #Humacao #AlmostLikePraying #PuertoRicoSeLevanta #BoricuaEnLaLuna
We're part of the #PuertoRicanDiaspora, and #Borinquen lives in our hearts.
My Spanish teacher in Highschool would play this song every day we had class on repeat for a good 3 months cause he loved the message it gave and he loved Lin’s work in general. I never got annoyed nor hated this song and it’s a song in my playlist :)

Oh my god so many legends here
Gloria and Emilio Estefan and Rita Moreno to name a few.
The song was great but I think that Lin Manuel should’ve featured some reggaeton artists in the song also
Rita Moreno was there when "Almost like Praying" / 'Maria' West Side Story came out 56 years ago !
And Luis Fonsi (Despacito anyone??) Juan Luis Guerra the king of bachata music...the legend of Ruben Blades...Gilberto Santa Rosa (best romantic salsa singer ever!!!) Ednitaaaaa!!!! If you're boricua for real you know. And cute baby face Tommy.
Laura F Juan Luis Guerra,Ruben blades,Gloria Estefan and Camilla cabello are not Puerto rican
I don't even speak the language but I can feel the passion from everyone and its incredible
Mario Rodriguez same.. its so deep even though I didn't understand anything😅
The lyrics are basically the names of the 78 towns of Puerto Rico
They are singing the names of the Puerto Rico towns trashed by the hurricane ,
done to the music from West Side Story / ' Maria' - " Say it slow & it's almost like praying" .
Your name is Mario Rodriguez and you don’t speak any Spanish? I feel that irony.
That province of stupid people gets what they deserve
I just wanted to thank Lin and all of the other artist for making this song. This man inspires me so much. He wrote, recorded and released a song with so many artists in a matter of weeks. A song which sounds so hip and at the same time would be helping so many people, financially as well as giving recognition to their town. I really hope this helps the people in dire need right now. Of course it brings back the memories of Maria in West Side Story !

This is a beautiful song
I don't know how everyone felt, but personally, the first time I heard this song and I heard when they said the name of the pueblo where I was born (MAYAGÜEZ) I was filled with pride that I can't possibly explain in words. It may seem trivial to some people, but to many Puerto Ricans, this song is special, and I am sure it is even more special to those who experienced Hurricane Maria first hand. Sometimes in order to help you don't need to do big things. Giving people hope, pride, and happiness is enough. Giving the people of Puerto Rico something that is uniquely theirs, was enough in this case, to at least lift a bit of the load.
I was felt almost the same when I heard Caguas, Las Piedras, and Rio Grande.

Talk about a poke in the eye for President Hoof in Mouth! And the millions he’s raised literally overnight, while President Hoof in Mouth blames Puerto Rico for being decimated by Maria. Can’t watch this without crying. Beautiful. ❤️
understanding this is probably beyond you, Alejandro DJD, but I write this for the benefit of others.
right after the hurricane passed, LMM said his social media feeds were overloaded with messages from people trying to get information about friends and relatives on the island. the larger and well-known areas got some press coverage quickly, but the inland and mountain areas were suffering horribly and there was no news of what had happened to the people there. LMM wanted to think of a way to draw attention to the plight of the island as a whole, not just the famous places tourists have heard of. People who live in PR identify very strongly with the names of their towns, and some of these little places never get their names mentioned off-island. As the cries for help kept pouring in and the names of the towns kept repeating themselves, it began to feel like a litany (a Christian worship form where you repeat a long list of things for which you need help or for whom you are asking prayers). Lastly, for sixty years the name "Maria" was associated in a positive way with West Side Story, but from now on it will always be a negative name on the island--the name of the life changing disaster that changed PR forever. So LMM took the iconic "almost like praying" line from the musical (with Stephen Sondheim's permission) and added the litany of singing the names of the towns.
It. Is. Fucking. Brilliant.
And he put it together in 72 fucking hours.
When you get a MacArthur grant, a Pulitzer Prize, an Oscar nomination, and a shelf of Grammys and Tony Awards, you can pass judgment on whether the man can write, move people emotionally, and raise money for people in desperate need. All the talented people on this project would not have donated their time to something that was "trash". The reach of this song will go farther than anything you will ever do and by calling it nothing special you diminish yourself rather than the work. So don't criticize what you can't understand, and step aside while a genius like LMM keeps coming up with new ways to make the world a better place.
Really well put. Very eloquently said.
It's a good song, and I'm not knocking it, but your logic is flawed. You absolutely can critique a song well without having a string of awards. And even a very talented and accomplished artist like LMM can make mistakes or put something out that's subpar. Finally resorting to an ad hominem at the end of your comment doesn't help your case much either.
Again, this is not a knock on the song or LMM, I'm just pointing out your reasoning isn't fully sound.

The ending hearing the coqui kills me 😍 mi Isla Bella 😍🇵🇷
👏🏻, praying for Puerto Rico
Shapiro/Peterson 2020 though it is not enough, should it be ceased all together ? Prayer is the foundation and can be reassuring to many. But yes, Faith without action is dead so there is so much more to be done.
have you made a donation yet?
Faithtasticness uh no you're clapping
Faithtasticness You're clapping...
Rigby I mean this song deserves some applause
And I can’t believe they listed all the cities of Puerto Rico in one song
Ava Cintron impressive with the rhyming
THATS WHAT THEY WERE DOING? I THOUGHT THEY WERE SAYING WORDS
si pero no fue muy creativo btw yo soy boricua
It’s impressive not because there are 78 but because the made the song rhyme (nací y crecí allí)
No puedo creer q a la gente le guste esto yo soy boricua pero es taaaaaan malo no hay ni un canto de creatividad
Listening to this song for Spanish class and I don’t have a clue what’s going on but the vibes are spectacular👌
It’s from the hurricane Maria a collab and it’s mentioning all the towns in Puerto Rico
MANY BLESSINGS TO PUERTO RICAN 🙏🏻🇵🇷🙏🏻🇵🇷🙏🏻🇵🇷🙏🏻❤❤
Gilberto Santarosa & Ruben Blades give this song "that" special touch that just warms your soul. Obviously Gloria, Ednita & J. L Guerra are idols... there's something about the O. G's that really brought the song together.
LIN WHY DO YOU KEEP MAKING ME CRY WITH YOUR BRILLIANT MIND OML
batgirlrules2 same
Crazy how such a small island can produce an enormous amount of talent. Respect to all Boricuas and God Bless

Ahamodul Sikder filly brown :-)
She did her thing
This song gave me chills❤ I'm Puerto Rican and of course I live here and it's been the toughest weeks of my life. From losing my house's roof and having my barrio destroyed, being 3 weeks without power and water and drinking water and washing my clothe in a little stream down the street. And now getting notified that cases of leptospirosis are flaring in my town and 2 deaths today were caused by it and my mom's freaking out because we have family who drink from streams as well. My school was used as a shelter and recent news are telling that there are outbursts of hepatitis B and Sarna happening in it and that my school semester has been cancelled until January 2018. It's all too overwhelming and I hope all of this to be over. Currently at a hospital charging all of my electronics and finally catching up with whats happening to my country right now.
Onodera Punpun Stay safe, dude. You guys can get through it. Sending love ❤️
It hurts to hear that. I just shed a tear for you reading your words. Hang in there!
Send my love from Florida! Stay strong, Boricua. Times are tough right now, yes, but they will get better, I promise. May your family and friends survive, and so may you!
