  • In today’s video I’m drawing Harry Styles in Procreate using only the native brushes.
Warning: this is one of my early videos and due to the time it took I sped up the blending stage - perhaps a little too much as it gets a bit hard to watch at times! If you’re stuggling to follow the blending but want watch me draw then I’d recommend checking out my real time back study video
Brushes used : bonobo chalk brush, 6b pencil brush
If you don’t have bonobo chalk (it was removed in v5) you can download it for free from procreate folio here:
    folio.procreate.com/discussions/10/28/43317
    - you want the 4.1 brushes set

This tutorial is fantastic! I have been painting and drawing on my iPad since I got it a couple of years ago and in that time I have watched tons of videos about digital painting and procreate. So much so that I was encouraged enough by my digital experiments to return to actual paint for the first time in decades as well… and indeed charcoal. But this tutorial took me another level up and I can see myself carrying the lessons from here over to my actual charcoal work (for which I will be watching your other videos!) because the way you work digitally seems so close to the real thing. Keep up the good work!

Ah good - glad it helped and keep at it - digital and traditional can definitely build on each other if you try adopting the same techniques

Very informative video. I do have a question related to brushes. I am a beginner who has used physical charcoal and paper to do portraits. However, recently I purchased Lane's charcoal master pack of brushes to us with Procreate on my iPadPro. My question is that I do not know why some of these brushes are called charcoal brushes? For example there is a brush in the set called vine charcoal, and I know that physical vine charcoal is used because it is very soft, dark, and can be erased easily. Does the vine charcoal brush in the master pack have similar properties when used in making digital art with Procreate? Any information you can provide me would be greatly appreciated.

Hey. Sure. So I’ve not used the vine charcoal brush a lot - I don’t get on that well with it and pretty much abandoned after a few tries. I prefer the general pencil and use that about 90% of the time in the pack. In my opinion the brushes don’t replicate the feel of drawing with stick charcoal particularly well - I think that would be hard. But they are great brushes and allow you with some practice to achieve a very convincing traditional charcoal feel. What I would suggest is going over to @Prokotv and check out the livestream recording Lane did over there. It’s a pretty good intro into the brushes. But yep - perhaps stick with one of the pencil brushes first to develop your control and familiarity with the set. Hope that helped

You can make it yourself by creating a texture brush. Check out my videos I’ve got a quick guide - takes about a minute and super easy 👍

really appreciate this video. Giving a like and subscribe :) May I ask, how did you screen record this? It looks much nicer than the native procreate in-app record feature?

Glad you enjoyed! I used the screen recording setting built into the iPad. It works well if you want real time recording or to capture the whole screen 👍

I was really excited when I came across this video purely by chance. Made a cup of tea then sat down with my iPad to draw along with you.
Time-lapse is a nightmare! It zooms in and out so fast makes me feel sick. Cant see what you’re actually doing after initial start of blocking in. Unfortunately, you’re waffling on about goodness knows what, you talk so fast I can only make out 1 or 2 words to a sentence, rather than talking us through where and what you are drawing. Obviously we cannot see the pencil as you’re not filming it in such a way. That’s fine if you use real-time playback but not in time-lapse.
Overall, disappointing I’m afraid which is so sad, but hopeful you will see this as constructive and not destructive

Ha! This made me laugh after I got over being mildly offended 😂 - yep 4X speed is too fast and the screen recording does a bit of a rubbish job of capturing the blending stage. You live you learn. I now avoid speeding up more than 2x max although unfortunately I still have a tendency to waffle. If you want a video where you can see how I blend with my hand in shot (rather than screen recording) then try the real time figure study one. Or I can recommend @sktchy - they monetise their work so are more focused doing polished, real time tutorials and it’s how I learned 👍🏻
