Cutting Coconut Lumber

- It is fascinating to see how accurately a chain saw operator can cut lumber. In America we are used to lumber that is exact and uniform. here a 2x4 might be 2"x4" or anything close. But the boards, often 12 feet will be very close to the same dimension the entire length. This same technique is used on all timber. From the beautiful Philippine Mahogany to the humble coco lumber.
And notice the safety equipment. Or rather that lack thereof.
This lumber was used to build the temporary housing and office for the building project on this site. Sixty trees were cut down to make room for the building and the parking lot.
OMG, This guy is awesome.... I'm gonna practice until i become perfect like

Very impressive and rare skills cutting without any margins or layouts lol a unique skills, calculations and Angle, consistent shoulders positionings and targets 99% accuracy very good men.👍👍👍👍👍
Sin hilo sin zapatos y en cinco minutos este sí es un fenómeno de la motosierra no como los de mi pueblo
Holy Crap! I can not even draw straight line with pen and a ruler. He is doing it all with that chainsaw. Damn!
This is how they cut lumber or just timber in the Philippines. because they rarely have sawmill or cutting factory specially in province.
In place like up in the cordilleras, we also do this way to cut pine tree slabs. no way you can cut slabs with a lot of accessories to put on a chain saw especially working slope area. we can just throw the chain saw if we slipped. admit or not it's not as accurate as you do with jigs.
Without market line he can...cut nice.. awesome
What I love most. Is the safety 0f these guys..🤣🤣🤣🤣
The secret is in the flip-flops.
mordechaimordechai we asian love flip-flops lol😂
Ahahahahahaaa trues up... we love flip flop 😂
The real secret is the long chain bar laid flat that keeps the cut straight
U am curious to know what u do with coconut lumbar. It's fibrous n rots quickly when wet. The bark is harder .
Good..very nice
Up until this morning I was looking into buying a Alaskan sawmill, now I'm going to Cambodia to smuggle me some Cambodian in a suitcase
Thank you UA-cam ☺
They are not Cambodians. They are Filipinos!
Esse cabra sabe como manusear. Um moto serra.
He has some skillz
Esse é o cara 👍
Amazing worker
what they will make with this weak wood..
For some reason I'ld always expected the core of a coconut palm to be large celled and pithy. Something that required a lot of water in the cells to keep it stiff.
bobw222
Coconut palm wood is surprisingly 'hard.' especially after it has dried. Freshly cut wood contains a lot of moisture.
Is it brittle when dried, like the shell of the coconut itself? Or is it more of a dense, fibrous structure like bamboo?

Coconut wood will be used for any purpose?

У меня другой вопрос, так ровно без всяких приспособлений
Wow🤔🤔amazing
And it will take me many minutes to measure with pencil and ruler before putting on my full size table saw to cut. And this guy did not even do any measuring. Amazing skill. Hope he gets pay well with that god given gift.
Hands down to him.
What nobody is screaming about him not wearing proper PPE?
Seriously mad skills!
This chain saw cutting skill(s) are very common all over the Philippines. Mostly they use .404 chipper type chain(rounded corner or semi chisel, rapid chipper), mounted on a diamond tipped(no rollers) guide bars mostly on 070, 090 Stihl. To cut a straight line easily without the problem of being crooked, they modify the blade hone to completely 90 degrees using a round file. Diagonal or say 10 degree angle blade sharpening can't cut as straight like this, because the blade tend to be pulled left & right due to the angle of bite. They even mill Molave, one of the hardest ironwood using this simple modifications. A full chisel chain(squared corner) & roller tipped guide bar tend to be more slacky are not suitable to do this job.
Everything you said was 100% true and accurate.
I was wondering what set up they used. I have been trying with my 440 with chisel and it is too hard to keep straight
excellent info, ty so much.
@@donovanmorris163 I know I'm late here, but my best results are always with a semi chisel chain brought down to a barely not flat angle. 10 degrees at most, although I haven't noticed much difference at 5 or 0.
The full chisel chains still bite hard on the sides when the angle is changed.
The guy in the video has a solid technique. I am going to play with it. My swaying has been giving really sloppy cuts in softer woods.
Haha just laughing while I'm reading a lot of comments here. Im from Philippines and i proud to say most of our chainsaw operator cuts like this,so u dont even need some mill to cut a trees like that.

God. I dodnt think cutting this consistent with a chain saw was even possible. this guy is amazing. He needs a raise!!!

Eu tiro o chapéu pra esse caboclo vil, ae serra dimais isso é porque o motosserra não tá lubrificando imagina se tivesse kkkkk tá de parabéns 👍
well, it is an adequate tool for the job but not the best one... try a Wood Miser portable saw mill instead. much higher yield and much less waste for any job.
In countries like the philippines that have exhausted their local hardwood supplies, coconut "wood" makes a great alternative for both hardwood and softwood applications. I put 'wood' in quotation marks because it isn't exactly wood although it possess many of the same properties and, when treated correctly, is much better in many ways. In my experience, the wood doesn't warp, it pretty dense and hard, is cheap and readily available, makes for decent furniture frames (I've made a sectional couch frame out of this material), it's also good for window and door jams in indoor and even outdoor applications if treated and finished correctly. The wood is sustainable because of the number of plantations there are in the philippines in conjunction with the fact that more palms can be grown in the same amount of space than any other species. Even when alternatives are available, this is still the go-to material for a number of outdoor applications for which in america pine and other softwoods are used. It takes stain pretty well but unless you're going for the cocolumber look, I would avoid using any stain other than a dark walnut and never without a pore filler. The lack of good affordable furniture wood in the philippines really opens your eyes to the possibility of using these alternative resources and wood products that you would normally never even consider. The cottonfruit (santol) tree makes for a decent hardwood that isn't easily dented (reasonably hard) and takes stain well but lacks a noticeable grain pattern. This is great for applications where a noticeable grain isn't desired. I've made book cases, showcase shelves, entertainment center and a number of other things with this basic wood and they've turned out looking quite professional with nothing but some good treating and finishing products, a little creativity and a good work ethic. Wood of any kind is used sparingly in the philippines for construction. The lack of available hardwoods makes it expensive to build a durable timber frame home, at least more so than it would cost to do the same with concrete. In this climate and in any event, concrete is the better choice. Just wanted to share some of my experiences with those who are interested.
Great info! Thanks!
how resistant is coconut wood in tropical climate? does it decay very fast? I am just asking.
Thanks
It comes from a tree...it's WOOD !
I just come to said too much to read bye
Porra. Eu ja n ia aguentar a primeira tora, com dor no pulso. Ta de parabens
If I was in a situation where dimensional lumber or a sawmill wasn’t around I’d be timber framing lol.
I could not do that without at least a chalk line. Even I probably could not follow the line accurantly.
Donald Miller after. 1-2 months you will.
Hi Dick, what is the impact to natural environment with this kind of business, I mean trees can grow maybe 10 or 20 years, I want to put up a business like this but I don't want to bring catastrophe to local people.

OMG! This guy is just too good!
Неужели на глаз так ровно получается?))Класс!
this is wood no brainer someone said it is not. when freshly cut, the coconut wood is soft and watery. but after 1yr, the wood gets so hard that will bend 3 inch nail. impossible to even use screws.
Are you serious about that man?
I used to do this in the islands many times...its soft n easy to cut n slices the cocanut palm when its green like yous slice a bread with knife...buh when its dry... the chainsaws will sharpening after every single slice ..lols thump up guys keep up the good works... Islands styles
Coco lumber is so soft, nice cutting with the Stihl though...
Just buy a table saw... haha
For eyeballing it, this guy does very good work!
After they cut the coconut trees they will plant a new coconut?🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
palm is soft I'm sure by the way its cutting
palm tree are hard wood species
No it's not thats ever greens hard wood. Where cured it even harder even for nails

Dang, my arms got tired watching him maneuver what appears to be a 2000kW generator pulling a chain bar. Honestly that powerhead does not look light.
What type of blade is used here? I have an island full of old coconut palms - former German Plantations in PNG , I would like turned into building materials.
Flora Pondrilei more likely a duromatic bar and a narrow kerf chain
Flo Pondrilei it's the size of the bar on chainsaw, and the chain is changed to match the bar, the bar is the part that the chain goes around on
im in that kind of industry for about 5 years,.,., ,

@@DavidBrockes Thanks I worked with Papuan hardmen they are real tough guys ...
Is that extra oil he's squirting on the bar?
Its wrong.... middle core of coconut tree cannot be used....
i couldn't believe this too until i saw it in person.
nice steel toed sandals1
bear slayer You meant titanium.
Try to work all day in steel toe boots all day in this climate and you will lose your feet 100% due to fungus and all kind of shit.
Do you think they lubricate the blade with coconut oil
Un maestro con la motosierra
Very nice I must try this till I get get on some soft wood. Nice job Guy's!!

Poor tree why did they cut the tree which could provide more money by selling its fruit
The Thank you for visiting.
The lot needed to be clear for construction of a new chapel for the Church members in Gasan. The conconuts had be harvested for years for the benefit of missionaries from the Gasan area. It was time to move to the next use of the property.
Qual a marca e modelo desse moto serra????? Top top top
If this wood is all you have then that's what you use. The secret to those straight cuts is not the flip flops but the guy who oils the chain.
Good cutting
I purchased a beam machine attachment
For sure I will try this free hand method
I have cut some and always wedge like by a 1/4 inch and found a smaller chain more accurate , good job neat thumbs up skill and practice
Kkkkk um coitado tenho é pena dele !!!!! Não consigo ver a cara dele e pensar que é homem!!! Nojento
Raw coconut tree lumber? What is it good for? How does it resist to ants, termites, and other pest?
Amazing skill, he uses that long bar as a sort of straight edge. Very impressive.
Awesome! !!! But what is in the bottle? Pee?
