I had a buddy who owned a bandsaw mill much larger than this one (with 5 feet between the guides). It was the largest sawmill east of the Mississippi. He imported exotic hardwoods and sawed them 9-quarter thick (2-1/4") and dried them in his 17 railroad car kiln for drying. He then stacked them as they were cut with slats between each cut to allow air flow, in his warehouse to be sold. He made a deal with Idi Amin in Uganda, who was the dictator there, to cut 4000 acres of virgin stand hardwoods including bubinga, zerbrawood, etc. Most have never seen these exotic woods nor the shear size of these slabs of wood. Some slabs were up to 5 feet across and over 20 feet in length. This man and his daughter traveled the world to find exotic trees to import and saw up. He sold his high end lumber to those wealthy people for their mansions. He provided tongue and groove lumber for the Dupont mansion in Delaware back in the early 70's. I was able to purchase some of the over runs of this for furniture building, from him. I also purchase several of the slabs for table tops and counters and provide my customers with some rather unique pieces. His large sawmill was located just outside Waldorf MD and his tongue and groove mill was locaed near Conowingo MD. I bought all I could afford before his supply ran out. In the deal with Amin, he agreed to trade the huge custom made band saw to him in exchange for the 4000 acres he cut. The saw was dismantled and shipped over to Uganda in the late 70's. The owner's name was Larry Hagy. I'm sure he's passed by now. It was a terrific find for me to be able to access such fine lumber.
Really interesting story. I don't even know how I ended up here and I haven't event watched the video, but your comment was worth it. Thanks for sharing.
Amin was a ruthless dictator who had many of Uganda's citizens murdered. I guess it is always good to have a buddy like that to buy your wares from so Dupont can get a nice teak toilet seat

You do understand that the logging industry replants and regrows more trees than they cut down, correct? If they don’t replace and even up the amount, they won’t have a job in the future.
Western society is becoming more and more stupid due to safety standards, because these standards ensure the survival and reproduction of stupid people. On the other hand, people in developing countries are becoming more intelligent because they ignore safety standards and allow natural selection. I know it sounds inhumane, but evolution doesn't care about humanity...only the survival of the fittest.
If sultan's luxury wood is worth what they say it is, I would recommend holding back on some of the proceeds to purchase more modern wood cutting equipment.
Judging by the safety precautions taken at the sawmill, I would guess there was lots of blood and probably some loss of life involved. Not for the weak of stomach.
Quite rare to get a Tamarind log that is not hollow in the middle, I had the pleasure of turning some Tamarind and it is as hard as rock but absolutly stunning wood. Shay

Nope. They like eating too much. I worked “under the table” at some sketchy places in the ‘70’s to supplement income. Ya did what you had to do, never unemployed a day in my life. Could have drawn unemployment when discharged but back then, there was pride, family name to uphold in small towns.
It just amazes me that these workers have hands and feet!!!!!
In the US.. this company will have lots and lots of work lawsuits..
I'm sure the one's that don't can't work anymore!😂
There’s no safety glasses either. You had to love the guy using the Sthil chainsaw. With the wood chips and saw dust blowing right in his face.

I think it probably looked amazing BEFORE it was cut down.
Agreed
Renewable resource. Meant to be partaken of.
Usually, these trees are dead, and better to remove them for use before they rot. The trees need to be aged/dried for years before they can be used.

What a beautiful peice of wood...
How much is a slab like that worth in the U.S. ?
At least half a dozen lawsuits.
