My most unusual HF antenna I ever had!

  • This Ham Radio antenna could be configured as Vertical No-Radials, or a Sloper, or an Inverted L, or whatever shape you like! It needs the ATU with it to cover all bands from 80 to 10m. And it’s only some 12m long! Too good to be true? That’s why it’s my most unusual HF antenna I had so far!
    It’s a fun DIY one hour or so project. I claim no originality. The roots of this design go back to 1936 when the article was first published in QST magazine on W3EDP antenna.
    This design has got many incarnations during the decades. Jose , VA3PCJ offered the one I describe here.

    Great video. I built the quarter size version yesterday and took it to a hilltop and it worked really well. Today I might make the full size version and try that !!!

      @@Linas_LY2H Just got back from the hilltop. The full size version needs an ATU for every band but the performance was really good despite the lower bands being totally dead today. The quarter size vertical is quicker to erect of course and doesn't need an anchor point for the far end of the wire, plus at least 66 feet of space to erect it in. Will try again when band conditions are better ! I use FT8 to get fast signal reports from all over the world. I find it an invaluable tool 🙂 73 de Simon G3EYR

    Regarding the Guanella balun, the Elecraft switchable 1:1-4:1 uses a binocular toroid to mimic two transformers. It's easy to replicate for the home brewers among us.

      Thanks for the info, it's certainly a nice Guanella balun implementation. The right binocular toroids might be hard to come buy, though. Hopefully, not:) 73! Linas LY2H

    You need an unun, a balun, and a tuner? You can get 1:1 on anything with all that. It's not a resonant antenna. But if you can make it work, that's great.

      @Linas_LY2H the full size tuned up easier on 40. Worked well on 40 and 20. The JR I had a little trouble tuning on 40 so I used a 9:1 Unun. Tuned up fine on all bands. The Jr worked better on 20 and 17 than the full size. I put it up as a vertical on my 12 meter Spider Pole as well as in a tree. The full size I put up as an inverted L.

    Linas, could you measure impedance/reactance just with the 1:1 common current choke? Without the 1:4. When you get i.e. 16 ohms using the 1:4 and the 1:1, you should get something like 64 ohms without the 1:4 and this would be closer to what we would want to see. 73, DL5MHK

    • @Linas_LY2H
      @Linas_LY2H  Рік тому +2

      Thanks Ralf! Yes, I probably could, just not these days: we've got tons of snow and the freezing temperatures :). Actually, it seems to me that the impedance behaviour in such an antenna heavily depends not only on the operation frequency but also on the role of the twin-lead feeder: on some frequencies it can act as a quarter wave stub, on the others- just like a short counterpoise etc. :) So, it will be interesting to make these measurements, thanks for suggestion again! I think I'll do this on the full-size version of this antenna installed on my 10m Spidermast. Weather permitting , though ... 73! Linas LY2H

      @@Linas_LY2H Hi Linas, I would recommend to try it with the antenna you've shown here - so you have a direct comparison. Or for sure the fullsize version with and without the 1:4, to see the difference. But if you have a real part closer to 50 Ohms on the fullsize version, then it's not necessary. Long story short: Do it with this version first!

    I always learn something new! You Linas, are a natural teacher. It’s second nature to you, and your knowledge and expertise help me understand the principles and theory of Radio communications.
    The Zepp is an interesting antenna, I never knew you could scale it down… the balun, and RF chokes, are also an important consideration. I have several RF chokes, but rarely need to use them, given I use Antennas which are not prone to common mode currents.
    Thanks Linas, for the video, and the knowledge you share.
