I do vaguely remember watching the show when I was younger, one episode I remember an episode where this girl found a black stone with strange carvings on it would let her go into a mirror. I dont remember the name of the episode though. I do remember the tale of the silver sight though! 😊❤📚
The Tale of Jake and the Leprechaun was, and still is, my favorite episode from the show! I just rewatched it a couple of times a few months ago. 😂 I don’t know why, but I LOVE that episode. 😍
I really thought that I had, but when I looked up the stories I remembered, they were all from Campfire Thrillers: Tallow Glee and the Golden Key! It’s a 90’s movie with really similar vibes. Have you seen it?
Yeah, I watched it all the time even though it scared me. I would usually shut it off partway through. The one time I forced myself to finish an episode it was about an invisible monster that was drowning kids in a school's pool. I was afraid to swim alone until I was a teenager because of it 😂
I remember staying up past 8pm (Late for 7-8 y.o. me) to catch every episode of this show when they were on and just falling asleep on the living room floor. Any children spooky show was a major highlight for me growing up. What stuck with me most is some of the settings/visuals were unsettling/scary and the equipment of the time of filming added another layer of creepiness personally. I never cared much for the fantasy/hero/scifi episodes but Are You Afraid of the Dark definitely avoided doing too many of those. The episodes that stuck with me even to this day was the one about the vampire in the hospital, the painter who kept a head in a cupboard with the paintbrushes, and the ghost hounds that were hungry. I will admit as an adult some of the episodes made no sense but they brought me joy as a child. And Are You Afraid of the Dark deserves praises for their diverse casting practices. They were one of the few shows of that time that would hire a wide range of people from different ethnicities/backgrounds.
Have I ever heard or seen/read Are You Afraid of the Dark? No. Am I gonna watch this like it's my favourite thing? Heck yeah! Always lovely to see and hear you, Gavin! 🎃🍁🫖
I always watched Are You Afraid of the Dark in Nickelodeon as a kid and it would scare me so bad. I never knew it was based on books so I am here for this!
I was like 5 years old when the show started, and I watched every episode, every week! Hearing the theme music STILL gives me the willies! 😂 Pretty sure I read all of these books as a kid, but I definitely don’t remember them, so thank you, Gavin!! ❤
I remember this show scaring me loads more then goosebumps when i was younger… still love them all tho I wish they had adult versions, with more grim tales. Sane camp fire…. Same wood… Gav can be the leader of our midnight society
Hi Gavin, new subscriber/Patreon here. I just wanted to thank you for getting me into reading again! I'm 33 now and I hadn't really read for fun since my teenage days. Thanks to your vlogs and reading sprints I am on book 5 since this August. So thank you for reminding me that reading can be fun.❤ Greetings from Germany
That's amazing that you're getting back into reading, I love that for you!! And thank you so much for letting me know, that means a lot to me and I am so glad I could have helped even just a little ❤️
I’m sorry for oversharing but I’ve been having the worst time lately and today in particular has been a truly horrific depression day and seeing this new video has given me something to watch to take my mind off life for a while. You are an angel 🫡😇
This show TERRIFIED me when I was a kid. I watched it because all my friends did, but it gave me nightmares so bad that my parents eventually decided I wasn't allowed to watch anymore. I still remember certain scenes to this day. That being said, if course I'm going to watch this video 😂
I would absolutely love a discussion video from you about all the nostalgia series you've done so far! What are tropes/themes that you noticed were very prevalent in that time period? What are differences to more modern books? What could we find in books today? How much can you tell about the change of different worldviews from then to today, like the fatphobia you mentioned multiple times in the goosebumps series I believe...? That could be such an interesting video! 🥰
Oh my gosh that is a great idea, thank you so much for sharing that with me! It would be very interesting and I'll have to put some proper thought into it but that would be very fascinating
Are You Afraid of the Dark premiered on Halloween or 1990, I was 9 years old at the time. This was a year before the premiere of Rugrats and Doug. I watched a lot of TV as a kid. I also remember it being part of the Snick line up and I think it was either before or after Roundhouse. I finally felt seen because to me there wasn't really any spooky shows out there for kids unless you count Unsolved Mysteries which even though they were true kind of freaked me out. I'll be honest the music to Unsolved Mysteries freaked me out more than Michael Myers chase music. The show ran until 1996 and there was a small revival, but they came out with 3-4 episodes last year I think because my kids watched it and adored it. I told them that I have all the seasons on DVD and that we can watch them. By the way they were hard to get until Canada finally released them so people in the States could buy it. If you lived in the States you couldn't watch it on UA-cam unless you lived in Canada or used a VPN saying you were in Canada. When they got rid of the show I was sad, but I was getting older and it wasn't appealing to me anymore because they weren't scary enough. I was 9 in 1990 and in 1996 I was 15, so I was looking to video games now and of course Wes Craven would scare the life out of me again with Scream in 1997 when I was 16. The man scared me in the 80's as a child with Freddy Krueger and he scared me in my teens into adulthood with Ghostface. Love him and hopefully he's resting peacefully, man was a genius. I wish I knew they had books, but in a way maybe I am glad I didn't know because some of them sound far fetched and some definitely sound fun like the one that was an episode The Nightly Neighbors. That was a good episode. My other favorite was the kid who got stuck in the pinball machine or the one who had to make up his own bedtime story to escape. I know I have more favorites, but it's been a long time, although I do remember Mr. Vink, he reminded me of Tim Curry. The one story talked about WWI which sounded interesting. I am not sure about both of the world wars. I know many in the States volunteered for WWII especially after Pearl Harbor, but I know when it came to Vietnam there was no choice. From what my mom tells me men either went to college or crossed into Canada to get away from the draft. Thank you so much for doing this vlog and spending the money. You brought back a wonderful piece of nostalgia for me. By the way in my family and group of friends we always scared or pranked each other, so I find that normal. As for the revenge, somewhat normal as long as it doesn't go too far, but I'm a petty bitch so normal for me. 😊💕💕💕
@HowToTrainYourGavin, so happy you did this vlog!! This show was one of my favorites! Some of those episodes as a kid, really creeped the heck out of me. The one with Forest Whitaker gave me nightmares. BTW, you got me hooked as a One Piece fan, and I gotta thank you for that!!!!! Luffy = King of the pirates!
I used to watch this show as a kid too and this vlog has me feeling so nostalgic!!! Makes me want to watch them again 😍👏 also I appreciate the effort you put into this vlog, and the fact that it took you a year to collect all these books, your dedication is inspiring 👏
I recently watched some episodes and I've come to realize at least half of my fears in life came from this show. So many episodes just stuck with me. There's one episode I can only vaguely remember the details and oddly it's missing from streaming but people were wearing like black body suits and watching everyone but they were like in a different dimension but yet still were watching everybody in this house or town or whatever I can only vaguely remember. But the vibe has stuck with me and I truly think it's why I often think people are watching.
Gavin, you absolutely outdid yourself with the halloweeny intro! I am loving it! And this whole video just reminded me about my childhood in the 90s and my obsession with Goosebumps :D Thanks for the trip down memory lane (now I gotta go to the library and find out if they have the Goosebumps books) ;-)
Gav. We do not deserve you. This is just so well put together! You are soooo good at this! A true King in his glory days. A bit of information/background for the Campfire Vampire. The creature discussed in the book is actually considered to be a type of vampire by the Indigenous cultures from where it originates. It's also considered very taboo to say the name of the creature aloud because they believe that saying its name gives it power.
Made it to the end. I love these types of videos and look forward to watching your channel everyday. It is the only thing saving my mental health right now. Thank you!
I absolutely enjoyed are you afraid of the dark the show when I was a kid the 90,s was such a great time to be a child never read the books I rewatched the show a few years ago and I totally forgot that so many famous people appeared like Hayden Christiansen ryan Gosling Gilbert Gottfried
I was born in 1991 and I remember watching a bit to those. I loved the intro, so I always remember it but not the episodes for some reason. I only remember watching So Weird and Goosebumps.
This show is one of my faves. I think I have a pic of a trip to Nickelodeon studios in the 90s…The effort you put into these videos does not go unnoticed! Great job Gavin
Commenting for the algorithm while I save this video for later! Also Gavin, you single-handedly make my Saturday cleaning fun since I always put you on on the tv. Your long videos are the perfect length for getting most tasks done so it has become a bit of a ritual (if you have a new video out) 😄
Are You Afraid Of The Dark was a huge part of growing up for me ! But i will literally watchh every single spoopy Gav video always even if i have no idea what it is lmao
What a blast to the past! Great vid, Gav~ Say, if you like Ancient Egypt, maybe you'd like the Yu-Gi-Oh manga. Super solid series, even nowadays. Just finished my reread of it, I had a blast!
The TV episode of The Tale Of The Nightly Neighbors ended about halfway into the book when Emma sneaks into the neighbour's house to confirm if they are vampires and Lex is revealed as the vampire. It was a nice surprise reading the extended story and I wish the TV episode had been a two-parter (two episodes). The scene with Emma hiding in the grocery store was great from what I remember.
THIS IS SO AWESOME I'M SO EXCITED! Mom had all of these recorded so I got to watch them when I wwas a kid along with goosebumps and this brings me SUCH nostalgia. Mom would deck out the living room so we could marathon them.
Omg there are episodes of Are you Afraid of the Dark that I STILL think about regularly over 2 decades after I first saw them (wow realizing how old I am 😅). Absolutely loved this one!
Want to watch this one but I HAVE to finish the two books I’m in the middle of so using this to reward myself. As soon as I finish those books I will be right back watching this maybe even with a hot mug of hot cocoa.
I have this weird fear of indoor pools, abandoned indoor pools give me the creeps, and I never knew why until UA-cam recommended me a channel with all the AYAOTD episodes and there's one about this kid that found this abandoned pool inside his school that was closed, and he convince the school to make it work again, but then weird things starts to happen inside the pool and I remember everything about this episode and how truly afraid I was, and I guess still am 😂
I was so scared of this show as a kid that last year I decided to watch the whole series and see what I really missed out on. I found it over all just a really wholesome yet spooky experience, and a lot of the stories (tho definitely not all😬) still hold up today. It was great hearing your thoughts on these books and getting to relive a bit of that nostalgia again. I hope you let us know what your favorite episodes end up being! (Mine are Tale of the Shiny Red Bicycle and Tale of Old Man Corcoran)
So I’m a decent bit to young to have grown up with Are You Afraid Of The Dark, it being long sense canceled by the time I was born, but I am a massive Doctor Who fan. So well watching the part on The Tale Of The Sinister Statue I noticed the author’s name. John Peel. I ran to my book shelf (then GoodReads) to check and I was right. John Peel is a decently well known Doctor Who novel writer. Writing for several series of books. Even writing a few of the more important books. His novels are pretty mixed within the fandom, but that was not the cross over I saw coming. Anyway great vid, love the 90’s nostalgia stuff, hope your having a great day (Also the way he writes woman in Doctor Who can be worse)
I actually really didn't like the show as a kid because I was scared of everything, but as an adult now its so fun to watch and really nostalgic, I didn't even know there was a series until you announced this video! Glad you enjoyed them and even had some 4's.
Love it, Gavin! I love going on this nostalgia trips with you - I love this show and goosebumps as a kid. Are you going to do the Fear Street books next? Maybe even the Netflix movies?
I totally didn't explain myself well in this video 😅 definitely depends on the fantasy, but like pirate fights for instance just make me think of childhood wander, not fear. Totally a me thing. Done well fantasy can definitely be scary, these books when they dipped into fantasy just didn't do it for me (but I am an old man now so it figures haha)
Just got book 17! Now only missing 16,19,21! Loved phantom school bus and secret mirror. Deadly diary was alright. Need to catch up! I’m really glad you liked phantom school bus. It was awesome
Best of luck getting the rest of those books, they really were so difficult to collect but so much fun too! Collecting nostalgic books has now become a passion of mine 😄
A sasquatch that gives first aid, now that's the kind of monster we need 😂 one thing that these middlegrade/teen series seem to have in common is the "missing" or negligent parents... they're terrible omg 😂 and thinking about the series I used to watch when I was a kid/teen, I swear I don't remember all those kids parents ahaha where were they?? Their kids were in constant danger 😅 parents, do better please
I can’t like this enough, my older sibling and I would watch the show every week and I would be so terrified 😅 i haunted the school library reading these books Have you done Animorphs by KA Applegate? Same nostalgia
Pause ⏸ 😮$500 for 23 books???? Thats crazy!!!! You really do love us lol jk jk I wonder why they stop making them when they still make Goosebumps and R.L Stine The Haunting Hour books
I love this video so much. This show was a huge favorite of mine when it first ran and i dont k ow how I missed out on the books! Love your energy in your videos!
another fantastic video for the 9 vlogs of halloween !! i never had the chance to watch Are You Afraid of the Dark growing up since it seemed to be taken off air by the time i was old enough to process what i was watching on tv. i was more of a goosebumps kid since that was usually what was on lmao, i'll have to dive into the tv series sometime ! looks very spooky !! also, just as a little note for the future, please don't say the name of the creature who's name starts w/ a "w". it's a creature from indigenous culture who is believed to be summoned if you say its name out loud, which evokes bad luck , and it's very disrespectful to do so. otherwise ? amazing vlog as always !! keep up the good work and i cannot wait for the next vlog !! :D
@@GavinReadsItAll that's true ! but it's best to censor yourself instead of flat out saying the name, like "creatures" or "horned monsters" are better alternatives from what i've been told ! if you wanna elaborate that they're those specific creatures, then you can mention they're ones that specifically come from indigenous culture and explain why the name is being censored. that's just what i've been told having talked to many indigenous people on the topic in my lifetime ^^ !
The numerous repetition of 'The tale' itches my brain in the worst possible way. Like I had to fast forward. Don't know what part of my mental issues started firing but it IRKED me.
Did you watch Are You Afraid of the Dark back in the day? What are your favourite memories of the show or even the books?

My first video of his I've ever watched. During the first 10 seconds I said to myself "these production values are insane!" Agree with you!
I love how as an adult, the potential of spilling your coffee cup over your home furniture is so much more scarier than anything in these books 😂
Genuinely admire your patience in collecting books that have been out of print for over 30 years, I could never

I actually really didn't like the show as a kid because I was scared of everything, but as an adult now its so fun to watch and really nostalgic, I didn't even know there was a series until you announced this video! Glad you enjoyed them and even had some 4's.
Obviously here for the 'special' Gavin ASMR...k bye love you.
Gavin, how do you always make me nostalgic for TV shows and book series that I’ve never read, watched or known existed???
Such a cool mushroom tower!
this was so fun to watch even tho ive never even heard of this series 10/10 video!
Slowly catchig up on your videos. I know for the fact i wasn’t into the are you afraid of the dark books but I love the TV show.
I’m so happy to see you cover these books! A shame some of them are hard to come by. But, seeing this made my day!
That giveaway on the first book is literally the day I was born🤣
😍😍😍Finally, I lived on this show when I was a teenager. I hope you enjoyed the show as much as the books!!!
Love your intro!!! Faithful follower here!!👻🎃🕸🕷🍁🍂
Yeassssss I’m gonna have so much fun watching this tomorrow at work 🎉👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I really just love your videos so much. Ugh. Perfection. 😌
Love it, Gavin! I love going on this nostalgia trips with you - I love this show and goosebumps as a kid. Are you going to do the Fear Street books next? Maybe even the Netflix movies?
I am always here for a Gavin upload
I don’t understand how adamant you are that fantasy can’t be scary. I think that can be the best kind of horror. 👻
Great Video and very Nostalgic!
@@GavinReadsItAll That makes sense. :)
I def remember this show..there was some great freaky episodes
Anubis I'd the god of funeral rites, protector of graves and guide to the underworld.
Gavin, I love everything you do, and I love your Halloween content in particular ❤
The scariest moment is the coffee almost spilling!
Glad I found your channel. Really enjoying the content. :)
Just starting this video so I don’t know yet what you touch on from the show but the episode about the swimming pool traumatized me!
YES the show was not afraid of killing kids and the monster in the pool was terrifying
Just got book 17! Now only missing 16,19,21! Loved phantom school bus and secret mirror. Deadly diary was alright. Need to catch up! I’m really glad you liked phantom school bus. It was awesome
And thank you for saying how hard to collect and how rare they are! It’s definitely for hardcore fans
Best of luck getting the rest of those books, they really were so difficult to collect but so much fun too! Collecting nostalgic books has now become a passion of mine 😄
i love you! these videos are amazing and the dedication is just exceptional
I was born in 93 also there was a episode where people tuned into a statue
I read The Phantom School Bus three times.
I think I've watched this maybe 5x now 😅❤🎉
My english teacher always put this show in primary school to help us learn English hahah
YAAASSSSSSS IT'S HERE
Sorry for the wait 😂
SWOOP MERCH!!!
My heart!
Hey Gavin, will you ever be returning to your Berserk read throughs?
Your Videos are so good!❤❤❤😊
Thank you so much 🥰
Your Welcome!❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
I can’t like this enough, my older sibling and I would watch the show every week and I would be so terrified 😅 i haunted the school library reading these books
Have you done Animorphs by KA Applegate? Same nostalgia
I have a 4 and a half hour video reading all of Animorphs haha it really was the same kind of nostalgia and such a wild ride!
@@GavinReadsItAll Perfect, that’s my night sorted! 💗
EXCUSE ME THE PRODUCTION VALUE OKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
We call Bigfoot, Sasquatch, here.
Hohohohhhoooo YESSSSS FOR SPOOKY VIBES!
First thing I have to say, ARE YOU WEARING SWOOP'S NEW VALID HOODIE?!
I love are u afraid of the dark and goosebumps, but have u ever hear of “fear street” books by R. L. Stine I love them a whole lot better.
This reminds me of The Twilight Zone but for kids
I was too scared to watch the show growing up 😂
Haha it had some very scary episodes to be fair
Pause ⏸ 😮$500 for 23 books???? Thats crazy!!!! You really do love us lol jk jk I wonder why they stop making them when they still make Goosebumps and R.L Stine The Haunting Hour books
Would you sell your Terrible Toys book?
I love this video so much. This show was a huge favorite of mine when it first ran and i dont k ow how I missed out on the books!
Love your energy in your videos!
The character who is telling the story in the book, therefore the narrator
@@GavinReadsItAll I just got to that point in the video that you explained that 😅. Thank you so much for the reply!!
another fantastic video for the 9 vlogs of halloween !! i never had the chance to watch Are You Afraid of the Dark growing up since it seemed to be taken off air by the time i was old enough to process what i was watching on tv. i was more of a goosebumps kid since that was usually what was on lmao, i'll have to dive into the tv series sometime ! looks very spooky !! also, just as a little note for the future, please don't say the name of the creature who's name starts w/ a "w". it's a creature from indigenous culture who is believed to be summoned if you say its name out loud, which evokes bad luck , and it's very disrespectful to do so. otherwise ? amazing vlog as always !! keep up the good work and i cannot wait for the next vlog !! :D
I see but it is what they were called in the book!
@@quartzyuploads thank you for letting me know, I do appreciate it
💛💛💛
The numerous repetition of 'The tale' itches my brain in the worst possible way. Like I had to fast forward. Don't know what part of my mental issues started firing but it IRKED me.
Sorry
@@GavinReadsItAll Oh no sorry love, that wasn't legit criticism or anything, I just have ADHD! 😭
Meant no offense, still loved the video. ♡
Im not sure if youre aware but theres some guy down in Rhodes desperately trying to find you, no wonder he cant
