Excellent podcast. Russia is a wannabe empire of misery.
The answer to the question that Peter is pondering about why everyone cares and identifies themselves with Ukraine and Ukrainians is social media. This is the first social media war. Mainly Zelenskyy, but many other Ukrainians are telling stories that help us to identify and empathize with Ukrainians. It's been a constant story-telling campaign that has and continues to works. I think Ukraine was lucky/blessed to have a story-teller as their head of state. His media-savvy and story-telling abilities as a writer, producer, actor combined with a fortitude of character have enabled Ukraine to shape public perception and win battles on the information front. I completely believe that the US and the majority of Europe were ruled by those "peace at any cost" people Peter mentioned and were prepared and unbothered to let Russia overwhelm Ukraine. It was only the societal resistance and cleverness and determination of the Ukrainian army which was broadcast through Zelenskyy and social media that made people realize that they should care about and support Ukraine.
A well written synopsis of a horrifying position. Do take a screenshot of it and see how you feel in a few years. Will be a mind bending if not exploding exercise for you.

The way I look at the situation now between Russia and Ukrine whatever loses of lives between them we suffered also the pain comparable to a fingertips pain is a pain also of entire body.

No body disputes that in this conflict no life is spared in either side both sides are dying.At some point Zelensky (Pres) once admitted that Ukraine lose 50-200 soldiers daily that was june- July today is more and the Russians are dying also.No one should manipulate the reality about deaths.Many soldiers are dying and Ukraine once vowed to retake Crimea and thereafter Kherson and Kharkiv and that it will not HAPPEN! Taking back Kherson or Kharkiv that daylight dream.No one dreams on daylight.its impossible period

Peter Pomerantsev disappoints me, he analysis of the Russian psyche/culture is so limited and lazy. "Sado masochism" and everything centres around this- like please, when will someone come along and actually give me a stimulating insight into the people that produced Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky.
