Can Trump Stop the War? – with Fredrik Wesslau
Trump wants to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine, but what difficulties will he face? Why must he genuinely engage with Ukraine and the EU to achieve this goal? What leverage does he have to encourage Putin to negotiate? Why does any peace in this context need to be sustainable?
In this episode of the Explaining Ukraine podcast, the guest is Fredrik Wesslau, a Swedish diplomat and analyst who has worked for many years in Ukraine. Wesslau is currently a Senior Advisor at Rasmussen Global and a Distinguished Policy Fellow at the Stockholm Centre for Eastern European Studies (SCEEUS). Until December 2022, he served in Kyiv as Deputy Head of the EU Advisory Mission in Ukraine. Fredrik has also held the position of Director of the Wider Europe Programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR).
Host: Volodymyr Yermolenko - Ukrainian philosopher, chief editor of UkraineWorld, and president of PEN Ukraine.

There is a big debate about whether sanctions against Russia are working. Some argue that they are failing to stop the Russian war machine, and that Ukraine’s allies need to find something else. Others say that real sanctions are yet to be applied or truly implemented. What is certain is that without the sanctions in place against Russia, Moscow would likely be occupying much more Ukrainian ter...

    Ohne thing I could ask, though I really appriciate our thesis: the USA made sure, that they will not follow international law, if it is not in their interest. Is it possible, that other countries took this as a role Model?

      While US presidents can sign treaties, ratification requires the approval of two-thirds of the Senate. The power of 'special interest groups' and the will of politicians to maintain a party power then leads to this problem. The war in Iraq was clearly a Rumsfeld Doctrine war, after a very wrong departure from Afghanistan, based on GOP propaganda as usually, opposed to this day by millions and millions of people, politicians and journalists. Russia's agression in Ukraine is not opposed by anyone in Russian government, while Putin doesn't even bother to pretend there are any laws.

    When we look at maps we are looking at reflections of ourselves. Ourselves is who we are in the place we are standing.,, that changes from people to people, and time to time. So everywhere and no whee is a borderline to where we are now.

    The things discussed here are most important and central to the future of not only Ukraine, but the rest of the world, as Prof. Snyder illuminated. What I wish is for conversations like this to become more central, and to be more important than they currently are in the world at large. I wish this also because it is inconceivable to me for Kharkiv and Dnipro to be anything other than centres of Ukrainian culture and places that define Ukrainian freedom. And for that we need people to pay attention. Thank you for this talk.

    This borderland metaphor is problematic, tons of people who don't live here and know the language think "Ukraine" means "borderland", which is just complete BS. It's ruzzian imperial nonsense. "Kraina" = country, and on old maps, Ukraine was spelt Vkraina, "v" = in, "kraina" = country, so more likely "Vkraina" (Ukraina) means "in country". No one really knows the etymology but its more likely this aforementioned explain.

      I started learning Ukrainian (as my first Slavic language) in April 2022, and the content of your comment is basically one of the first things I learned! And I tell anyone who'll listen ☺💙💛 If I may ask a language question, I've noticed that the word край used in Ukrainian to mean "edge" or "rim" or "verge" but also, at times, an area of land, a region...? I'm a bit confused, and I want to get this right exactly because of what you say in your comment: morphology and etymology have been twisted and weaponised by imperialist orc propaganda, and there are sadly many people around the world who choose to believe that and repeat it, for even more people to hear 😒

    • @irongron
      @irongron 12 днів тому

      @@1midnightfish It's actually very relevant you ask about "Krai", which form part of uKRAIna. My ancestry is the former Yugoslvia, and my first language was what used to be called Serbo-Croatian the word "Kraj" means exactly what you stated. - at the end, the verge or edge. The historical roots of the word to come to the Balkans can be traced an old Slavic tribe that lived in the area of what is now west Ukraine in Galicia, the "Bjeli Horvati" (White Croats), that migrated to the Balkans 1300 years ago, give or take, after the fall of ancient (Kyivan) Rus to escape the Golden Horde. There was also a Red Croat tribe too, hence the red and white checked flag of Croatia, representing these two old ancient tribes. I forget exactly now, pff the top of my head, but the red tribe lived either further to the north or south. Anyway, the closest proto-slavic language that was spoken in Kyivan Rus was modern day Ukrainian - there was no "ruzzian" - this is evidenced by one thousand year old graffiti on the walls of Saint Sofia cathedral in Kyiv,. I have seen this graffiti myself, it's mostly on the wooden panels on the upper floors of the church. To cut a long story short. that is the etymylogical line of that word "Krai" that is preserved in the Balkans and is evidence that old-Ukrainian of Kyivan Rus was the mother tongue of the "Red Croats". No wonder the Serbian lapdogs of Russia ere Jealous, they never came first and it bothers them, just like the Muscovites - Muscovy was just a "suburb" or the outskirts of Kyivan Rus and came later. I can't paste the link my comments get zapped but search for this title - The Walls Speak: Ancient Graffiti Deciphered In Kyiv Cathedral

    And yet they are aligning themselves with a colonising imperialist force seeking to subjugate a whole people. It seems to me to be a repudiation of everything that they actually believe in. But I also have friends on the left to also for historic reasons think that Russia should get a pass for its bombing of hospitals, kidnapping of children, rape, murder, ethnic cleansing, etc.

    This was an interesting discussion. It's unfortunate though that the speaker from Brazil wasn't corrected when he claimed twice that his country had 100 years of relations with Russia. It might be more correct to say that it's had roughly the same duration as Ukraine given that Ukraine was a major part of the Soviet Union, and that Russia proper didn't really exist as a state until its dissolution.

    Thank you for this interesting and informative conversation. Re Wagenknecht: She and her "party" are losing credibility and influence rapidly in all the latest polls, and suddenly now they are ready to enter a coalition with the social democrats and the conservatives in Thuringia. If she has to rely on Ukraine supporting parties in order to retain some political relevance (and possibly be somewhat successfuk in the upcoming federal elections in Germany), she may very well temper some of her appeasement rhetoric in the future.

    We 🇯🇵 have two opposite histories and perspectives as colonized by the Western powers and a colonizer of the neighboring countries. After our defeat in WW2, we were offered a chance to relearn democratic values and our heritage of struggles for them. Mainly thanks to our geopolitical importance during the Cold War, we were privileged to receive generous assistance from the West to rebuild our country, having no single doubt that the world learned from history and left the war in the past. So this russia's full-scale war against 🇺🇦 in 2022 shocked us, it feels like a total violation not only of our struggles after the opening of our country in 1854 and 1945 but also blatant insults to our partners who gave us huge support and to our shared values for which countless innocent people were killed and sacrificed themselves. I don't think the majority of us have been aware of 🇺🇦situations since 2014. The unbelievable brutality, that we did to our neighbors and believed it would never be repeated again, moves us strongly to show our commitment to 🇺🇦 and its fight for freedom and take a clear stand against russia's fascism challenging the rule-based world order. A bit off-topic, but 🇺🇦 old wooden houses look very similar to ours😮 and the brave 🇺🇦 soldiers always remind me of our samuraï spirit, which many of us have forgotten, unfortunately. It's our war. I just wish we could do more and faster💔 Glory to Ukraine 🇯🇵🫶🇺🇦
