Single Mom with no money to spare - Thanks to your posting I was able to fix my young GE microwave tonight to save dinner time. I'm so very very appreciative to all DIYers that take the time and effort to post things like these fixes. You're awesome for doing this video. Thanks for all the detail and the flash light!!! - Denise from Annapolis
This was exactly what I needed to know -how to get the plastic trim off without damage. My door mounted spring arm had broken, so I just used one of the metal channels on the side as a new spring purchase point. 15 minutes and saved $300.00! Thank you Paul!
Mine is a Maytag but the process is exactly as you show. I got the trim off. Lifted the latch up and off. Low and behold, there was the spring just dangling there with the broken plastic it was once hooked to laying in the rim of the door. Isn't that something!! Thanks for doing what you do. I put this microwave in a year ago. I really didn't want to have to take it out again. Especially over a door latch. You saved the day!!
Awesome, Beerchasers! Have a good weekend friend. I,m at the firehouse today but getting together with my family tomorrow.P.S thanks for the update. Paul
Thanks Paul, came home late from work near dinner time; wife and daughter saying microwave is broke. They went to visit a friend, found your video and watched it twice; fixed in three minutes. Saved me repair cost, God Bless
Thank you soooo much for this video!! We r renters and the stupid latch broke. I tried velcro to keep door closed but light wudnt go off so tried to take out bulb but cudnt figure THAT out so Holy Spirit hit me with the brilliant idea to search for video to actually fix the door. And guess what? I followed ur instructions AND I FIXED IT...me, the stay at home mom! Thanks so much!!!!
we also GOTTA THANK UA-cam folks......if YT didnt exist in the early 2000s, we be profiting appliance companies.....but YT makes it so that bloggers can do training vids and we ALL can learn a thing or 2....
Paul, You rock, man. I got home last night and my wife told me our Frigidaire microwave wasn't working. It only took a few minutes to conclude the door latch was broken. I found your video, and the most valuable piece was how you demonstrated the removal of the plastic framing. Perhaps a half hour later, our appliance was back in working order thanks to your advice. Many thanks!
Dude, you rule. This was perfect! Two local repair shops said it wasn't repairable and I wasn't seeing the broken tab so didn't know how the spring worked. I was one step from buying a new microwave and you saved the day! You need a "donate" button :-)
WOW!! I opened my microwave door and something was rattling around inside. I immediately started looking for a new door, but then I found this video. It really was as easy as you said it was!! Thank you so much!
Thank you! I've referred to this video twice to fix my microwave! I'm a single mom with a small budget. I fixed it and showed both of my girls my work. It's fun to show them with a little instruction, I can fix things myself and they can too!
thank you! worked perfectly. can't believe we have been living without a microwave for the last few months and it was a simple 10 minute fix. you rock.
My microwave is fixed now thanks to you! 😃 I didn't have a drill handy, so i heated a paper clip on the stove and used that to make the hole for the spring. Thanks again!
Thanks, our mw was less than 2 years old. I was able to use the latch on the slider and hook it up towards the middle, my wife and I were debating on a service call or a new mw. After watching your video had it fixed in 5 minutes. Thanks
Whalah! Paul, you are a god send! Your instructions and descriptions were so easy to understand. I like that you were specific to warn how not to remove the trim cover as well. I was lucky that the arm on the main piece was not broken, so I didn't have to use a drill. What was broken was the plastic piece on the door that the spring was hooked to. All I did was hook the spring to the closest metal piece (like the one you show in your video), then I popped the trim cover back on, and not my microwave is usable again! It is Saturday, so the odds of me getting someone in to fix this thing before my party here at my house tomorrow was slim to none. So you saved me time calling to find someone available, scheduling the time, being here when the repair main arrives, and of course, the cost of the repair would have been at least $75 for the service call plus parts.! Thanks again, Paul!!! Mimi
Paul, thanks a whole lot. Your information saved me a lot of money and made me look like a knight in shining armor to my wife. Keep the good info coming. BTW, my microwave was a Kenmore over-the-stove model. Your door configuration was exactly the same as mine.
Yeah Frank, Sears has numerous manufacturers that supply their products for them. They use name brand companies to make private label products for them. Thanks for taking the time to comment! Paul
Pauls theory about using another spring that may differ from the original, means a LOT!!!! if you cant find an existing hole on the door frame, just mount it onto part of the door "fins".........thats VERY GOOD!!!
My wife was on Amazon ready to purchase a new microwave. I followed your steps exactly. No trips to the hardware store and a working microwave. You saved me hundreds of dollars. Thank you.
Loved this! Unfortunately, I broke the trim getting it off, and then the latch. Samsung must have seen this video. The trim was extremely difficult to remove! Now looking for parts. . .
I fear attempting DIY home repairs and you explained that so simply and clearly, I a) felt confident attempting the repair and b) it worked. Thank you for posting!
Thank you very much for this video, just purchased my new home and found out the microwave door was being held together by velcro. Watched you video and sprung into action and the door latch is now fixed saving me a bunch of money!! Keep up the great work.
15 minutes and my microwave door is fixed. 4 minutes watching this video and 11 to remove trim drill a hole and reattach everything. Amazed and very grateful.
I'm subscribing. My husband is at work and I didn't feel like waiting until he got home. Now I feel like wonder woman. The video is good quality with a good view of the project and you added zero unnecessary information. Thank you!!!!!!
I'm thoroughly impressed by the internet. I googled "fix broken microwave latch", the first result was this video, this was exactly my problem, my microwave looked almost identical inside, and I fixed it in a similar way. Thanks for the video!
You're the best! Our microwave door broke yesterday. We were already dreading having to buy a new one, when pow, I search UA-cam, and find this magical video. THANKS for showing me how to fix it. Took me two minutes, and the door latches shut once more. THANK YOU!!!!!
Paul I work with rentals where the tenants manage to break the latch time in and again. I’m thrilled to try this!! on my repair scheduled for today!!! Thank you great info!!! ~Anita
Dear Paul, I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video that you posted. You probably saved us a big repair bill! Who knows how much a repair person might have charged for this fix and if we would have been told the truth about what was wrong. Our microwave would not even work because of the door not having enough tension. The plastic hook was broken off so I just hooked the spring on to one of the metal tabs on the side. We have a Frigidaire Gallery so if anyone else sees this, this fix works for that microwave. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
Never fixed an appliance before in my life. Watched your video, 2 minutes later I successfully repaired my microwave. I am so happy...almost smug. Thank you so much!!
Paul, thank you very much. I have an over-the-range Frigidaire. Your steps worked perfectly. The molding popped right off. My hook was broken so I didn't have to drill the latch. Took me all of 10 minutes start to finish. Thank you.
You rock! My husband went to find the owner's manual to see if he could trouble shoot the problem. I found your video and had the answer before he even got to the filing cabinet! Thank you!
Wow, my wife was impressed when I fixed it. Thank you for your easy step by step video. Perfectly explained. It was for my Maytag microwave from 2007 and my door is even better than it was too! Bill
This video was a lifesaver! When the door stopped latching I was ready to go buy another microwave, but I searched UA-cam just in case and found your video. In my case, the end of the spring broke instead of the plastic latch, but most of the fix was the same. Thanks for saving me the cost of a new microwave instead of just a $1.49 spring!
this video helped me fix my grandpa's microwave before he could even find out it needed to be fixed(and without spending a lot of money to get a new one). very easy to follow and very helpful! thank you so much!
This so WORKED!! I have a Electrolux microwave and the small spring simply dislodged.Just like your video, the door would not shut. Followed your directions exactly. Saved me $85 just for my repair guy come to look at it. Took about 10 minutes to fix!! Thanks so much
Just fixed my Frigidaire microwave door latch in 5 minutes flat! Thanks Paul. Your video was perfect. My latch and spring were fine. The plastic part the spring attaches to in the door broke. Attached the bottom of the spring to the metal flange on the door. Perfect!!!
+Gary Payne Hi Gary, I'm glad I could help. I just got home from work this morning to find a leak behind my brick on my house! I guess I'll be doing a plumbing video soon, LOL. Have a good day and thanks for the comment! Paul
The repairman came out, for the $85 service call. I did not watch him, but he was honest about what it was. He, without redrilling, re positioned the spring, but that failed after 48 hours. Called him again, and he said new door is $290+, but should he tell his associates to talk to me about a getting new microwave? I was deciding what to do, when I came across your video. After watching once, with a butter knife, and my hands, I fixed it 5 minutes. That is a great video. Thank you.
Great tip. The hook on the door was the one that got broken in our case and not the moving part. Attached the spring to one of the metal bends and presto! No need to buy parts…as long as the moving part holds on and doesn’t break! Thanks so much!!!👍👍
Thank you for helping me fix my 15 year old built in Sharp Carousel microwave oven! The issue was slightly different as the "arm" where the spring was attached was still intact but where it attached below had broken. I just attached the spring to one of the fins as you suggested to return tension to the spring and its working fine! Your video was very helpful and your descriptions were very clear. (My husband is impressed!)
Paul, thanks so much. Your video is fantastic and I watched it multiple times to see exactly how you did everything. You explained it all really well and you even make it interesting. I fixed my microwave after almost a year of not being able to use it. We were getting ready to call "a guy". You saved me loads of money and made me feel good too!! Thanks again.
Nearly 5 years later and your vid still saving people money. I was about ready to pull mine and thought, might as well check UA-cam. Thank you very much!
Thank you!!! Watching this video multiple times (then at 75% speed multiple times - I'm not too proud to admit this!) was exactly what I needed to fix my microwave door. My setup was a bit different but the same principal applies. Now my Sharp Carousel from 2001 has perhaps another 18 years left in it!
Awesome. Thought I was going to have to buy a new door $94 +. Watched the video, pulled the inside trim piece off and saw that the spring had come off the slider. Put it back together and it works perfect. Thank-you Paul.
Great DIY. I'm impressed with the improvising to just drill a new hole instead of buying new simple part. Repairing is better than replacing, but few get the big picture.
Fantastic, 10 minutes and done. This is the second time I repaired my microwave, first time it was the door switch, a bit more involved. This was easy. Thanks!
Your the MAN!!! My door was broken (Just like yours). I had resigned myself to taking down the microwave and having it repaired. I talked to the local shop that wanted $50.00 just to look at it, and they told me I would most likely have to replace the door. My wife found your video and i have $50.00 + in my wallet. Thanks
THANK YOU!!!!! Saved me so much time! I would have had to schedule an appointment for maintanence to come to my apartment. Thank you for posting and also for CLEAR directions. You're amazing.
Thanks so much. I'd already purchased a microwave to replace mine with the disconnected spring latch issue you so perfectly addressed. I was scrolling through UA-cams to find out how best to remove old and install new when I ran across yours 20 channels down the list, and thought "what the heck". your words, "don't be so quick to run out and get a new one" were meant for me. thanks again.
Paul, your microwave door fix was right on the money.......watched the video.....went home and fixed spring attachment in 10 minutes.....all better.....saved ?????? by not replacing unit.......Thank you for posting !!!!!!!
Thank you so much, Paul. I fixed my microwave latched by following your video. my husband was ready to buy a new microwave. You saved us about $300. Thanks again.
Thanks so much paul. I just couldnt figure out how to fix the microwave door latch. Your instructions were thorough and easy to follow. Your a life saver. Thanks again!
Thank you so much, Paul! This was almost exactly the problem with our microwave door, except the broken piece was on the door and not the moving latch piece -- so I just hooked the spring from the latch to the closest metal fin on the door and we're back in business! Thanks again.
My microwave is only 2 years old and the latch just broke. Only took me 5 minutes to fix it after watching your video! Thank you so much for making this video!!
My man Paul! I had rotator cuff surgery last week and my right arm is completely immobilized. I thought I was looking at a couple hundred dollar service call to fix this problem. Your instruction were so clear, I was able to fix this with one hand tied down! Thanks for saving me money.
Tim Wittig Hi Tim, I am just getting over my rotator cuff surgery myself! Tore my labrum, bicep tendon and rotator cuff. I know how you feel man, it stinks! It does get better though, I'm feeling pretty good now.Hope you get better soon!!Thanks!Paul
Fixed my poor quality Electrolux microwave using your video as a guide. My spring had flown up inside the door into an invisible pocket but once I took the window out I found it. One microwave diverted from landfill, thanks Paul, you rock. Total repair time < 1 hour, cost $0.00 !!!!
Hi Pat, it's a shame, but most microwave ovens are built like this. I believe it is on purpose so they will have consistent sales. I'm glad you were able to fix it and thanks for your message! Paul
Thank you! This video was posted 8 years ago and saved us $500 in 2022. We planned to head to lowes for a new microwave today then I decided to check UA-cam University. Simple fix. Thank you for keeping this video up for 8 years.
Thank you very much. You have helped me. My mother walked into her open door which caused it not to close properly. After removing this plastic thing it was very easy to remove the door and hammer the hinges back into position. The door closes very nicely again.
Awesome video! I was just about to call a repair company, when I Googled "microwave door wont close". This took me less than 10 minutes to fix, and saved me at least $100.00. The little piece that broke was on the door, not the latch. I am sure they would have said I needed a new door. Clipped the spring to the metal tab things on the door, works great! Thanks for posting this!
Thank you! thank you! thank you! I was about to get rid of my brand new microwave and decided to check on UA-cam for any help. After watching your video, it took me about 15 mins to fix the door. Wife was elated. Happy wife, happy life.
Thanks for this video Paul - We had been looking at buying a replacement microwave when I thought the latch might be the problem for why the microwave wouldn't work and wondered if it would be easy to fix.. Couldn't believe how easy this was to repair thanks to your video. Really appreciated!
Paul...I don't consider myself very handy but you really made this simple and easy for anyone to understand. Five minutes later I tell my wife we don not have to call a repairman or buy a new microwave!!! Thank you so much for posting these how-to-repairs for everyone.
Had to fix broken outside handle. This video made it happen showing how to get access to mount screws. Will remember the spring fix in case that ever happens. Thanks Paul - you're good at this stuff.
Paul, thanks for doing this. Great instructions. I couldn't find the spring so I took a little run to the store. You saved me the cost of a new microwave and a time-consuming installation.
Thank you very much! Due to a broken plastic rib which holds the spring, I thought now its time to spend some $$$$. But this video showed that I can still make it work without spending any money. Thank you so much!
I have used this video twice now. This time when the door broke it was because the bottom plastic clip holding the latch glide out had broken. Took a piece of plastic and super glued it the the inner latch , which kept the glider in the right place. Works perfectly! Just subscribed to this feed.
Thank you! On mine, there was a little plastic piece that held the end of the spring that snapped off. I was able to hook it to somewhere else- no drill hole required- and that saved us from a huge repair or replacement!!
Paul, my door latch was not broken, it was the part that the spring attaches to the door that had broke off. I thought I would have to purchase a new door or microwave but I attached the spring from the latch to the metal frame of the door like you did in your video.....worked! Thanks for your help!
THANK YOU, Paul!!!!!!!!! I knew it wasn't something major and you made it so simple for us to fix it in minutes!!!!!! I have a Samsung and LOATHE their kitchen applicances. You saved me from throwing it out the window even though I wanted to so badly!
Thank you so much!!! Saved me!!! Was without a microwave for 2 weeks... last week I stopped the man of house spending money on a new one that we could absolutely not afford with bills past due.. Told him we could deal with it..... once upon a time people lived without microwaves at all my choice is a house without a microwave over a microwave without a house ... lol.. I'm a woman and you rocked this video, I fixed it in less then ten minutes... The argument over not buying a new one lasted longer then me fixing it...Thank you again for taking the time to help others....
Thanks Paul! Your video saved me from buying a part that I didn't need. And, my husband was blown away that I fixed the microwave! He thinks I'm a mechanical genius - I didn't mention how easy it was. ;-)
Thank you sir. Your video is 4 years old, and still saving marriages! Your instructions worked like a charm!
Single Mom with no money to spare - Thanks to your posting I was able to fix my young GE microwave tonight to save dinner time. The stuff one can find on the internet is amazing. This solved my problem, took me 2 minutes and I look like a hero to my wife. Thank you.
you would NOT beleive how much $$$$$$ I gave to Home Depot just because my door was broke :(((((( approx 5 Magic Chefs later and NOW I see this!
This was exactly what I needed to know -how to get the plastic trim off without damage. My door mounted spring arm had broken, so I just used one of the metal channels on the side as a new spring purchase point. 15 minutes and saved $300.00! Thank you Paul!

Ditto... Paul.. .thanks... also had a Kenmore and you nailed it on the easy repair!
Thank you Paul. I thought I was screwed but watched your video and was able to fix it within 5 minutes.
Thank you so much. This did the trick and saved me from buying a replacement door.

Thanks Deric, I'm glad I could help!

Helpful video. You might change the title to more something more accurate: "How to Fix a Broken Microwave Door Latch
"
Always amazes me the people that provide these fixes - thanks for your time and effort !!
Loved this! Unfortunately, I broke the trim getting it off, and then the latch. Samsung must have seen this video. The trim was extremely difficult to remove! Now looking for parts. . .

Paul, thanks so much. Your video is fantastic and I watched it multiple times to see exactly how you did everything. You explained it all really well and you even make it interesting. Amazing Paul did just what was said in your video and done.
Thank you so much.
Had this issue and after watching your video fixed the door in less than ten minutes, easy peasy….thanks so much.
I was close to buying a new microwave when I found your video...problem solved! Such an easy fix and saved me a lot of money!
Thanks Paul. You're my hero. It took me 12 minutes to fix the latch. Regards from Kure Beach, North Carolina. Rick
Great post Paul and very well explained. It took us 5 mins to do, you saved me a whole lot of money and gave my son a chance to feel like an engineer!
Thank you for your tutorial. 10 minutes took to repair my microwave's door. I am woman and I did it myself, so proud of me. You rock!!!
Hi Ina, thank you for taking the time to comment me! YOU ROCK!!
Thanks for making this video. Our 10 yr old microwave door latch just broke this morning and after watching your video, I got it fixed right away.
Paul, your microwave door fix was right on the money.......watched the video.....went home and fixed spring attachment in 10 minutes.....all better.....saved ?????? by not replacing unit.......Thank you for posting !!!!!!!

That was the perfect fix and probably saved me a bunch of money from buying a new door or knowing me a new microwave. Thank you!
Thank you and God bless you Paul!! I followed your instructions and was able to fix my microwave door, so proud of myself!!!
Thank you Michelle, you are obviously a DiY pro. Have a great night and God bless you and your family!

@@Waynes-xt9gr 😂 yes I am a fireman, but I am a fortunate one. My firefighters are great cooks and they take care of me every day.
Thanks so much paul. I just couldnt figure out how to fix the microwave door latch. Your instructions were thorough and easy to follow. Your a life saver. Thanks again!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge sir. I just was able to fix my microwave door latch. My husband is out of town. You are a Godsend. God bless
Thank you Mary, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment me!
Paul
This might be an older video, but it is still relevant and saved me a trip to buy a new microwave. Thank you kindly for this!
I'm really glad I could help Jeremy, thank you for taking the time to comment!
Paul...I don't consider myself very handy but you really made this simple and easy for anyone to understand. Five minutes later I tell my wife we don not have to call a repairman or buy a new microwave!!! Thank you so much for posting these how-to-repairs for everyone.
Thanks G82niner, I really appreciate your comment!
Paul
Had to fix broken outside handle. This video made it happen showing how to get access to mount screws. Will remember the spring fix in case that ever happens. Thanks Paul - you're good at this stuff.
Paul, thanks for doing this. Great instructions. I couldn't find the spring so I took a little run to the store. You saved me the cost of a new microwave and a time-consuming installation.
Thank you very much! Due to a broken plastic rib which holds the spring, I thought now its time to spend some $$$$. But this video showed that I can still make it work without spending any money. Thank you so much!
Thank you, Paul! Saved us from buying a new microwave or calling a repairman for a simple fix! You're awesome!
You saved me so much money, Paul. Thanks for taking the time to make that video. Easy, five-minute fix.
That's awesome, thank you for giving me the good news!
Paul
Thanks Paul! Your video saved me from buying a part that I didn't need. And, my husband was blown away that I fixed the microwave! He thinks I'm a mechanical genius - I didn't mention how easy it was. ;-)
