AME Podcast #17 - Gary Skolits, Making Music Provides an “Electric” Reliving Experience (07/18/24)

In our seventeenth AME Podcast, we continue our quest to serve artistic excellence through a conversation with Gary Skolits, EdD, professor, researcher, and inspired violinist. At a very young age, Gary was supported by his Hungarian family to play an instrument especially since his mother absolutely loved many Strauss waltzes, which became familiar tunes stuck in Gary’s head. These experiences, along with many other youth music making involvements have lived inside Gary and motivated him to study old timey fiddle blue grass music particularly Appalachian Folk Music, which was created mainly for dance purposes. Even though Gary did not perform music for many years and his career was not in music, the role of music inspired him with valuable skills such as the management purposes he used daily. Gary continued to be connected with music through concerts and visiting special places like the Stradivarius Museum in which he spent five days soaking in how violins were made. Since Gary’s retirement, he decided to return to music making beginning with blue grass music and then performing in a community classical focused college orchestra. For Gary being on stage and reliving those experiences, he calls “electric,” has provided many instances to relive music making engagement of fifty to sixty years ago. Even though his music making skills needs to be sharpened, Gary has found a teacher that helps him break down the parts as he wants to become an exceptional orchestra player and hopes to one day record Appalachian music in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains. Gary’s scientific method to relearning the violin has provided him not only instances to go back to previous experiences, but his curiosity and self-directed learning brought joy and inspiration to perform life changing music.
